Hot and bored on holiday

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 13:09

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

I hate beach type / sunbathing holidays. Always have and always will. That would be my idea of hell tbh

longestlurkerever · 25/07/2023 18:10

I'm glad this thread's got less sarcastic. Just because the OP has enough money to afford an abroad holiday doesn't mean her life is perfect. It can be pretty lonely when you feel you're in sole charge of the kids away from your usual options to seek out adult company and a golf resort is not my idea of a fun holiday either. If you have a car OP can you seek out any cooler places in the mountains? Evening and early morning swims also a plan.

Thisgroupneverceasestoamazeme · 25/07/2023 18:36

I can’t even muster up a witty reply. Thoughts and prayers are with you at such a difficult time.

Timeturnerplease · 25/07/2023 18:44

If your kids are old enough to entertain themselves then you’re currently living my dream. I would be immobile with my Kindle for large periods of time, then in and out of the pool when hot.

Vodkafairy99 · 25/07/2023 18:46

I'm perimenopausal, overweight, and yep get a bit grumpy too. However, I'd be delighted to be relaxing and reading, I'd be hitting book number 4 sharpish. Also, I'd be in the pool playing with my kids and indulging in board games whether you like them or not. Stop being a spolit grumpy mare and how bout contributing to some awesome family memories you will have forever. You are bloody lucky, and tomorrow is never guaranteed. Try enjoying yourself.

CatAndHisKit · 25/07/2023 18:59

Why go to the Med end of July / early Aug?? Especially of you aer heat intolerant! We all know it's unbearably hot there now (and has been for a few years).

JennyWren87 · 25/07/2023 19:01

So OP... you're posting this in the last week of the month where most of us are waiting to get paid to afford the usual... bills. Not holidays. Completely tone deaf

BarbaraofSeville · 25/07/2023 19:05

And the sarcasm is strong again on this thread. Hmm

Poor OP, stuck with a selfish DH in an unpleasantly hot country and people can't see past their own jealously to see why you're rightly pissed off with the situation.

Lovetoplan · 25/07/2023 19:08

How about cooking? Or find some new stuff to watch on You Tube.

bellocchild · 25/07/2023 19:16

You probably need a better resort? One with street life, shops, Roman ruins and castles to visit? Flamenco, fiestas, outdoor music? Try Cataluña and watch them build human towers? That's riveting! Sports resorts are bound to be beyond boring for the non-sporty. Leave them be and find yourself somewhere entertaining...

We are here for 2 weeks so another 9 days - last year 3 in the summer. Going home to the UK last year the heat intolerance was even worse. I’m on HRT and it’s better this year as no hot flashes just hot all the time.

My ideal holiday would involve riverside walks, beautiful scenery , boats, little towns to explore, pub lunches. I’m not fit enough to enjoy mountains at the moment. Maybe Scandinavia?? The weather in the UK this June was perfect for me. I work so hard that not much time for fitness at home.

I enjoyed a yoga retreat pre Covid. Likeminded company , lovely activities. Enjoyed skiing holidays prekids but don’t anymore… childcare responsibilities etc.

DH and I were worried how I would handle the heat before we came.

I’m going to have a sleep and hopefully wake up less grumpy.

Oh @olympicsrock you have made my year. DH wants to get a holiday home in Europe where he's from and for all the reasons you have said I have always refused for fear of being bored out of my mind quickly. I like camping in the uk with long walks lol. I'm using this thread to back up my holiday home refusal

Toomuchtrouble4me · 25/07/2023 20:05

I’m DREADING my holiday next week - we don’t even have a pool, I just don’t know why I agreed to it! I hate swimming in the sea and will be a nervous wreck when kids do. I just really really don’t want to go but I’ve agreed and DH and kids are looking forward. I KNOW 100% it will be too hot, DH will have us off on long hikes to somewhere full and kids will be bored nightmares. Give me a week here in Blighty in the rain with kids booked into football club anytime.

Arona · 25/07/2023 20:24

If you have a Kindle read the Pucking Around series by Emily Rath if you haven't already that will definitely entertain you for a few days 🥵 (might make you even hotter though 😂)

Pepsi2001 · 25/07/2023 20:41

Shame sorry you having to endure this !!!!!

Diamond flip-flops too tight, OP? Grin

😂😂😂

Answersonapostit · 25/07/2023 20:45

I would play my miniature violin for you but I can’t because Im swimming down my local high street in this glorious July we are having, my menopausal overheating is working for me as it’s so fucking cold and windy. Poor you it must be awful though having to eat out and come back to your villa and watch your kids having a great time. Count your blessings and get yourself in a better frame of mind.

If you read full thread I think she was lacking any adult company.
In same way lonely pensioners ask the time etc.

doorstopper123 · 25/07/2023 21:38

Just eat, drink, swim repeat

sounds ideal to me

kennycat · 25/07/2023 21:46

I’m m also in Spain but on my own. It’s hot but I’m walking around seeing stuff then occasionally sitting down to read/ have a drink/stare at the scenery.
listen to a podcast maybe??
