I don't know what these people think they are achieving. I think the mum was in a cab which looks like an electric car anyway, they refuse to let her get past.

@MillicentBystandr

I agree that the UK has made good progress towards its targets, though that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be encouraged and pressured further to ensure it fully meets the legally binding commitments it made. More so given that historically the UK has created far more pollution than most (per capita).

oakleaffy · 22/07/2023 16:28

Utter scrotes, complete arseholes.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 22/07/2023 16:30

@Soontobe60 you’re correct. I haven’t seen an interview with a JSO person explicitly saying they’d block an ambulance. I’m so very sorry, it was the extinction rebellion founder. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/extinction-rebellion-founder-admits-would-25136898#

but my point remains is that some environmental protest group blocking the roads have happily said they will block ambulances. I couldn’t actually care which group they are.

I have also seen videos, one of which has been linked to on this thread of a blue light ambulance being blocked by JSO (definitely them). And the JSO spokesperson defending it on a news interview with a load of word salad saying that it was ok because the protestors directed them via another route. But wouldn’t accept that actually getting out the way would have been better. He did not directly say that ambulances should be blocked (in fact he lied even in the firm evidence of them not moving) and said they’d move…..but he just kept twisting the conversation round to say “but the main problem is all the thousands dying and displaced in other countries”. So certainly giving the impression that more weight should be given to that and that blocking ambulances is justified. So he is implicitly saying they will block ambulances and that that’s justified and certainly their actions back that up.

what has happened to extinction rebellion btw? I get the impression that probably they have just rebranded as JSO?

Extinction Rebellion boss admits he would block ambulance carrying dying patient

Roger Hallam said he would have "stayed there" when asked about footage of a woman begging campaigners to move from the road so she can follow her 81-year-old mum being rushed to hospital

The planet is in trouble for sure. It makes me sick to think of the level of wasteful crap that serves little purpose that we are destroying the earth to produce. Stopping a few little normal people going about their days is not going to effect any sort of change. As those in real power will not give a shit and go happily about their days in their helicopters and private jets.

I rarely drive, about 1000 miles a year and cycle mostly

You have no right, absolutely none, to drive anywhere, let alone 1000 miles and the rest! and then have the brass necked cheek to come here lecturing people!

Go and have a good look at your own behaviour!

Roger Hallam, the XR founder who said that, is ALSO the founder and leader of JSO. So you do not need to apologise.

The founder of Just Stop Oil was reportedly arrested ahead of planned disruption along the M25 motorway.

Yes, we do need to encourage voters to pressure the governments to keep up the good work. The problem is that JSO is alienating the very people we need to vote for further environmental actions, the recent elections post XR, JSO actions have shown increased resistance from voters to improve the environment and meet CO2 targets. JSO are hurting the movement because they are engaging in eco-fascism and for good reason, we are not going to accept fascism of any ilk.

" I have been to a country where there are already famines because loss of habitat and temperatures rising. "

Oh have you now?!
How did you get there? did you walk? What was the carbon footprint for that trip, including everyone else that went?
Perhaps you shpould reflect on your own behaviour before you have the temerity to lecture anyone else!

I know I really do worry about flying and have seriously reduced in recent years and used non flying options. No I'm not perfect and don't expect anyone else to be, but I am improving. What I hope is we all make some adjustments, as on mass of course this helps, but I hope governments across the world take action or keep their word.
What I really believe is humankind can be amazing when we look put for each other.

Agreed. These morons are destroying much of the momentum that’s been gained in turning public opinion.

Ostryga · 22/07/2023 16:51

Every time I see a JSO protest like this it makes me want to idle my car for hours, not recycle and buy endless single-use plastic. I assume that’s not what they’re after.

If someone stopped me from taking Dd to hospital, they would be joining us in A&E.

TitoMojito · 22/07/2023 16:53

ivykaty44 · 22/07/2023 15:18

Well, this gives you the measure of them, doesn’t it.

what would you choose then?

30000 a year dying or 2 people each year

You're missing the really important part of this which is that Just Stop Oil has achieved absolutely nothing except making people less interested in the climate crisis. They aren't saving the planet. They are just being idiots in public.

It’s so disheartening as well for all of us who have been doing the heavy lifting thus far to see XR and JSO unravelling what was finally majority public support. It’s why I get a bit passionate on these threads too.

Your reaction is so common, you’re not alone, I have met people who have said they’ve stopped recycling, stopped cycling/walking, turned up their thermostat , or booked an extra foreign flying holiday because JSO (or XR) have got under the skin and pissed them off with their sanctimony, hypocrisy and general disregard for the average working Joe and Jane.

Im glad you are fighting the urge.

Flickersy · 22/07/2023 17:04

If your child was that ill why would you waste time arguing when you could ask the taxi driver to turn around and take a side street? JSO are a pain but they don't block all the roads - just go round.

I rather suspect the baby was not in a critical state.

Toomanycaketins · 22/07/2023 17:05

The knots people tie themselves in trying to justify preventing a sick child getting medical care…. Reminds me of hot fuzz where all the villagers keep droning “for the greater good..”

i bet if they or one of their friends collapsed or had a heart attack at the side of the road, they’d expect medical attention to turn up.

TRexTara · 22/07/2023 17:06

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/07/2023 15:10

Flanell

Asking someone if they have children to imply that maybe they’re being arseholes/have terrible opinions because they don’t, is really insulting. Lots of us are childless, childfree, have lost children, are pregnant, are trying, are not mums yet and would never agree with the opinions you are against.

You talk about JSO alienating people and you’re doing the same in a way that will be very hurtful to some of the groups I’ve mentioned”

Nonsense. I’m assuming that this particular poster, who clearly has no empathy for the mother in question, has never been in the same situation.

Exactly! Most women I know who are childless whether by choice or not completely understand the heart stopping anxiety and distress dealing with a sick child and understand that a mothers priority is to get medical attention and that no doubt she will have bags full of stuff that she needs to take to the appointment/hospital with her. This poster is being disingenuous so your question, do they have a child? Is perfectly valid and legit.

At any point they could have used their brains, perhaps let her car through but gone around behind her to block the other cars. They had no plan in place to deal with the situation.

Whenever I have seen a group like Let Women Speak protest (never been in person) they have always thought it through and planned ahead of time, gotten relevant permits, had a safeguarding plan in case of problems, especially during covid, but these idiots are causing big problems here and have no plan of action.

Why the hell would anyone who didn't have to take a sick child on a bunch of busses?????

@Bumblebeetree21

How dare you come here lecturing other people, how dare you, when YOU are the problem!
The average family can barely afford to put food on their tables, let alone go jetting off to far flung places, for many even a bus ride into their town centres is unaffordable but you and your ilk have the nerve and audacity to lecture them!
And as for your ( and @anotherside similar ) point
" What I hope is we all make some adjustments "
You are aware aren't you, that this used to be a heavily industrialised country? What do you think happened when those industries were closed? I'll tell you shall i?! Tens upon tens of thousands of people, kids included were left in blinding poverty, communities destroyed, hope destroyed, never to recover! How dare you talk of people " making adjustments"?!
Go and put your own behaviour and attitude right!

I take it you’ve never been bumper to bumper in a grid lock then? You can’t just go around, unless you get out the car and go on foot and the child may have been too sick for that.

It doesn't matter if it was critical! Perhaps it's an appointment she's been begging for for months! Perhaps her child had a fever or had had a fit, it doesn't matter. Her baby needed to be seen. Did you watch the video? How on Earth could that car have possibly turned around without causing a major incident and the driver losing their license?

You can, you turn around in the oncoming lane which is also empty thanks to the blockage.

They are bigoted scum, soon one or more of them will be put in hospital when they pick on someone trying to get to work. The police need to arrest them and they need prison time. Are you all aware Starmer has taken money from these terrorists?
