AIBU to think this type of proposal is always more about the proposer than the proposee?

Man accused of 'selfish' behaviour after proposing to girlfriend at graduation

'Let her have her moment.'

Looks like Newcastle University have taken down the tweet

That is a god awful proposal. I'd so fuming. Let the woman have this one special day after all the hard work she has put in. Stupid man.

I’m assuming it went down like a cup of cold sick?
How tone deaf can you get?

Well that's turned it into a lovely wee drama all that was needed to say is let me think about it it's so sudden and then get back to her celebration of her achievements. Like making a mountain out of a mole hill. Let's forget the guy has any feelings what's so ever and focus on a big drama. He asked her to spend her life with him not to go ten rounds.

Stealing her moment AND putting the pressure of thousands of spectators upon her to say yes.

Arsehole.

This.

I wonder if they were both foreign students and had already talked about marrying after graduation. Perhaps their families were there for a few days only and he had taken this opportunity to speak with her father and then propose whilst everyone was together? This might be very important for some people and the opportunity might not arise again for a very long time.

unless 'when everyone was together' you mean all her lecturers, the vice chancellor, the rest of her graduating class and their families, presumably none of whom give a fuck about them marrying, that's no excuse to do it actually at the ceremony - he could have done it before or after; during photos; most people go for a celebratory meal, etc. If the families were travelling from abroad it's highly unlikely they would literally only stay in the country for the 2 hours of the ceremony and immediately leave again.

Most of us manage it without a cast of thousands cheering us on 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've come back to this thread because something similar happened at the World Athletics championship at the end of the race walks - an athlete was crossing the line and her partner proposed. It felt like a similar thing really - she crossed the line and he stole her moment. She didn't win anything but that isn't really the point - it's an achievement to complete at all.
