Why use gender when you mean Sex ?

Parsley1234 · 20/07/2023 21:25

Why do people ask the gender of their baby or have gender reveal parties ? The correct question is what sex is my baby or maybe I’m just getting totally fed up of woke nonsense.

Because sex is rude 🙄

LittleBearPad · 20/07/2023 21:26

Because they are being twee

DustyLee123 · 20/07/2023 21:29

Yep, sex not gender.

SummaLuvin · 20/07/2023 21:32

the same reason loads of people people say dice when they mean die - when words are used incorrectly often enough their exact correct meaning isn't always passed on, so more people then use the words in the same incorrect way.

WhatADrabCarpet · 20/07/2023 21:33

Because they're thick?

CuriousLadyBird · 20/07/2023 21:33

Because inviting people to a sex party would cause some confusion.

sunsethorizon · 20/07/2023 21:34

Because people are awkward about using the word sex. Or because they don’t really understand the different between sex and gender.

Because historically (and until very recently except in academic circles) sex and gender were considered synonymous and used pretty much interchangeably. Gender was considered a more elegant way of saying sex when I was a young person (born mid 60s), presumably because of the other meaning of sex.

My Collins 1991 dictionary doesn't even give the 'identity' sense of gender as a possible meaning. It gives firstly grammatical gender, secondly 'the state of being male, female or neuter' and thirdly 'all the members of one sex eg the male gender.'

The separation of the meanings of sex and gender in the mainstream is extremely recent so I guess usage takes time to change.

ReachForTheMars · 20/07/2023 21:40

I think it always used to be used interchangeably but now sex/gender is a thing.

BeardieWeirdie · 20/07/2023 21:41

I’d rather go to a sex party than a naff gender reveal party. 🤮 Nobody gives a fuck about your baby’s genitals, they just ask out of politeness to fill the void in the conversation.

Parsley1234 · 20/07/2023 21:41

Yes gender has been hijacked by the wokerati and misappropriated

I'm confused - your first two posts seem to imply you want proper use if 'sex' and 'gender' as different terms. But this implies the opposite, that you believe they should remain synonyms? Just trying to stir the pot?

If you book a private scan to find out the sex it’s called a gender scan at most places, so people have a gender reveal party. Why does it bother you so much?

Nope. It’s massively important. Confusing them leads to inequality, healthcare problems, enables predatory men to get into places they were previously excluded from.
