Why use gender when you mean Sex ?

Parsley1234 · 20/07/2023 21:25

Why do people ask the gender of their baby or have gender reveal parties ? The correct question is what sex is my baby or maybe I’m just getting totally fed up of woke nonsense.

@Moneynewpence or just incredulous about how we are having conversations - can a woman have a dick ? can a man be a woman just because he says he is ? Can a man compete fairly against women with a dick ? It’s just beyond belief my gay friends are just as bemused as me it seems a tiny % of sexual predators have started this insidious trend and if we all don’t agree we are cancelled. It seems the Be Kind movement made people not able to be honest when they see the truth aka a trans man cannot be a woman most of the time they have male genitalia and this gender reveal shows a lack of understanding of what really is going on

Because until very recently gender was simply a polite synonym for sex and this is how most people still use the word.

The distinction between biological sex (immutable) and sociological gender (whatever I fancy today) is very recent and most people are either unaware or think it’s a load of bollocks and carry on using the word in the same way that they and previous generations) have always done.

NotTerfNorCis · 21/07/2023 08:24

I don't like it because it enables the harmful idea of gender identity, and elevates regressive cultural stereotypes. But then again, 'sex' does have a double meaning and 'gender' always used to be the polite word for it.

Parsley1234 · 21/07/2023 08:25

@marshmallowfinder you put it less clunky than I did a baby can only have a sex not a gender thank you

It makes me so angry to see people proudly pronounce that they don't care. Imagine saying that about any other human rifhts movement? You should csre about women's rights and what kind of psychopath days they don't care that women are being aasa8anf abused? OP you're right with this one. Either gender is sex in which case GRA needs repealing or it isn't in which case it's a sex reveal party. Some people who proclaim it to be gender reveal also use gender as an identity thing. That confusion in language is a tool used by men's rights activists so yes it matters.

By any dictionary definition of gender prior to about 2010 babies definitely have a gender as it is just a synonym for biological sex (and has been from the 17th century right up until very recently). This is how most people still use the word and it is still a perfectly valid usage.

I think you have a lack of understanding yourself.

A trans man is a woman. Trans men are females who want to live and present as men.

Transwomen are males who want to live and present as women.

But you have nicely revealed your true agenda, which is to get people wound up about trans people and not in fact to discuss the conflation of sex and gender.

Parsley1234 · 21/07/2023 08:40

@Flickersy can you not see the conflation is part of this ?
I am GC a trans man biologically is not a woman and a woman cannot have a dick or are you saying they can ? Just because a trans man say they are
I can self I’d as a 6ft black supermodel I am still 5ft 7 white not exactly a supermodel or I can self I’d as a donkey I still don’t have large ears or a tail
I cannot self I’d as anything because it’s not true that’s what I don’t understand why are we being gaslit into believing lies

For someone who is so het up about the correct use of the English language you're certainly mangling it quite wonderfully.

A trans man is a female. A woman. They identify as a man and present as such.

A trans woman is a male. A man. They identify as a woman and present as such.

Either you’ve hugely misunderstood usage or you are being deliberately obtuse. A transman is a female who thinks they are male. A transwoman is a male who thinks they are female.

literalviolence · 21/07/2023 08:45

OP it is confusing because the language aims to confuse. Much as it shouldn't be, a biological man who is trans identifying is a transwoman. A transman is a biological woman who's trans. Think of the trans prefix as 'pretend' or 'wish I was a..'. So a transwoman is a pretend woman or a man who wishes he were a woman.

Presumably OP can get their head round ‘woman’ (wo-man) so I would hope that transman shouldn’t be too challenging a word. ‘Seahorse’ will probably blow their mind though.

I actually don’t think people holding “gender reveal” parties for babies are the same people who view gender as an identity. People who speak about woman/man as a gender identity or about people feeling a gender identity for themselves are usually adamantly opposed to focus on biological body parts.

I think the people using gender in phrases like gender reveal are using it as a synonym for sex.

Parsley1234 · 21/07/2023 08:55

@literalviolence yes trans - pretend exactly so why is society being gaslit into accepting males pretending to be woman to win races to gain access to female spaces to go to women’s prisons

Because historically (and until very recently except in academic circles) sex and gender were considered synonymous and used pretty much interchangeably. Gender was considered a more elegant way of saying sex when I was a young person (born mid 60s), presumably because of the other meaning of sex.

My Collins 1991 dictionary doesn't even give the 'identity' sense of gender as a possible meaning. It gives firstly grammatical gender, secondly 'the state of being male, female or neuter' and thirdly 'all the members of one sex eg the male gender.'

The separation of the meanings of sex and gender in the mainstream is extremely recent so I guess usage takes time to change.

This. I don’t think this is people being “woke”. It’s historical and also because people are coy about the word “sex”.

It would be great if thatvis the case! That would mean I can hear every gender reveal invite as a statement that the invitees are gender critical and oppose the TWAW hate slogan!

StampOnTheGround · 21/07/2023 08:58

Private scan places still call them gender reveal scans, so people tend to use it still.

I completely understand the difference between sex and gender, however I couldn't care less that people get it wrong. Too many people are overly sensitive now.

I mean I think if someone is popping balloons and shooting coloured conferee out in the basis of their child’s sex then you can probably assume they think of biological sex as fairly important and focus on biology rather than inner identity. I think the “woke” people you seem to be concerned with are the ones calling their child an androgynous name and calling them ‘they’ until they want to decide if they are a boy or a girl.

Dotjones · 21/07/2023 09:06

People say "gender" instead of "sex" for the same reason I say "gynaecologist" rather than "cunt doctor". "Sex" is not just used for describing male/female, it also means something that many people find rude. (Think about it, when was the last time you saw graphic sex acts on daytime television? In the UK, probably never.) "Gender" has long been seen as being interchangeable with "sex" and more polite.

The problem now is that some people use the term in a different way whereas others interpret it differently. It's the same with lots of words, "gay" for instance - depending on who you're talking to when it can be interpreted as "happy" or "homosexual" or "rubbish". When it widely meant "happy" many people would have been offended if you called them "homosexual" and many people today find the "rubbish" meaning offensive.

I wonder if the women who are naturally looking forward to their much loved baby realise that those children will be taught in school that humans can change sex, can be put on drugs to arrest puberty, make them sterile, be offered surgery to remove developing breasts, castration either chemical or physical, all in the name of Gender.
Language matters and the deliberate conflation of sex and gender in recent years is gaslighting. Parents need to understand this.
Women on Mumsnet are rightly very concerned about this. At least, after several years, the mainstream media is beginning to wake up.
It isn't just about men in women's sports, refuges, toilets, changing rooms. It is a massive safeguarding issue for children.
