To think Just Stop Oil are showing up serious security breaches?

Maybe I'm missing something, because I dont understand what JSO are doing apart from turning everyone against their cause apart from looking idiotic with their slow walking.

But watching the coverage of them at Wimbledon, the snooker, the rugby and the Chelsea Flower show, what is to stop them (or anyone else) doing far more damage?

Given they dont mind blocking ambulances whilst people die, it's not out of possibility that they might do something far more serious. Where is tbe security?

Global CO2 emissions are what matter. If we drill the oil and ship it abroad then it's not our problem? If we manufacturer everything in China it doesn't count? You're proposing eco-Brexit!

We're an island but we're still on the same planet.

Anyway I'm not defending them, I'm saying those complaining about them and saying protest in a non-disruptive way aren't going to get through to them as a group, because it didn't solve the problem for the last 30 years. They feel helpless and want to do something and recycling doesn't cut it. Agree with them or not, a little empathy about why they act like they do might help understand how to deal with them.

I bet this won't sound as funny as it was to watch.....but..... a friend sent me a video.
Yesterday some teenagers who had been stuck in a traffic jam caused by the just stop oil protesters , followed them back to their card. The teenagers sat In front of the cars, stopping the very tired protesters from driving home.

These people started to scream and shout at the teens for stopping them from driving home. The teens sat there for an hour....

I cant see who posted about it originally but I've just seen the video of the pregnant woman in the crash who's boyfriend assaulted the protesters.

Good.

Im not proposing an “eco Brexit” at all. We don’t export any oil, in fact we import oil because we aren’t drilling enough for domestic needs, hence the need for new licenses. In the charts I posted, the consumption emissions DO include everything we import and that includes imports from China, so they DO count and even after counting them, we have still cut our carbon footprint dramatically.

So the UK’s global emissions are not the problem in all of this. We are literally a world leader at cutting them down.

Yes global emissions matter, but what the fuck is JSO protesting going to do about global emissions? Not one iota of a difference, other than slightly increasing our emissions by causing traffic jams.

The only way JSO would make a difference was if the British Empire still existed and their actions could somehow translate into the British Government exercising Imperial Power to order other colony countries into doing their bit. But we are a tiny country now with no real power to speak of.

I have empathy for JSO activists very obvious lack of intelligence and misplaced caring for the environment. It’s rather like how you’d have empathy for a daft colleague who tries very hard to do a good job, but the poor dear just has the brain of a dull spoon.

Well we're burning oil right now: https://grid.iamkate.com/

Saying someone else is doing it worse doesn't work in other areas of life, so I'm not sure why you think it's okay for the UK. We're in the top ten richest economies. We could do so much more, but we don't because it's expensive and requires commitment. They aren't wrong in their message. This thread was debating their methods.

You ask what they might achieve. Imagine a world where we heavily invest in science, green technology and the like. A world where we invent, build and make things as a country again. We then export this technology and it lowers global emissions because it works. JSO might not offer much, but you're offering nothing beyond accepting we're all fucked. Brilliant.

Yes we are burning oil now. But you are not getting that we are in the top 3 globally for countries that are cutting their CO2. Almost everyone else is doing worse than we are.

We aren’t in the top ten richest economies, we are in the top ten largest economies but we are 26th in terms of richness.

We could have done more, but that was in the past when we slacked off in the early 2000s. We do have commitment and the data I posted shows that we’ve had serious, enduring commitment and action since the 1990s.

JSO are wrong in their message and their methods.

Imagine a world where we heavily invest in science, green technology and the like. A world where we invent, build and make things as a country again. We then export this technology and it lowers global emissions because it works.
I don’t need to imagine this because this is a world we already have! How can you say we do not have this? Where do you think we got solar panels and wind turbines from? How do you think we have quintupled the energy efficiency of literally everything that uses electricity or fuel? Do you seriously think we have no shared any of the technology with other countries? (We have and are sharing it, in fact much of our green technology was developed in collaboration with the EU)

I can see JSO taking credit for this world that already exists, after all they’re apparently convincing some that it doesn’t exist and need only do a big reveal and then claim credit.

BillaBongGirl · 21/07/2023 18:17

JSO might not offer much, but you're offering nothing beyond accepting we're all fucked. Brilliant.

Lol. They offer nothing and they create more CO2 by their stupid protests,
As for what I’m offering, you have no idea the stuff I’ve done in my career. I have managed millions of square miles of nature preserves and brought species back from the brink of extinction. I have greened the purchasing of entire departments of the government, ensuring that recycled and carbon neutral procurement was implemented. I have installed reverse osmosis tide powered desalination plants to provide water to islands of people with no fresh water source. I have phased out diesel generators on these islands and replaced them with wind and solar carbon zero power production. I’ve launched satellites that track weather patterns and monitor the ozone layer. I’ve managed government grants funding initiatives like intelligent buildings that are carbon zero, researching bio-fuels, pollution/toxic waste clean up and green technologies- ie the satellite solar panels I used can be repurposed to use on the ground with a few tweaks.

I live a low carbon life style myself.

We are not remotely “fucked” at all. What have YOU done for the planet? I’ve done a few bits and bobs to help the planet in the course of my professional career as stated above….care to say what your contribution has been?

Other than praising a bunch of eco-larpers that are doing nothing for the planet at all.

Lasttraintolondon · 21/07/2023 18:24

As honoured as I am to speak to the person that single-handedly saved the ozone layer and rescued all the pandas....

I'm not a supporter of them not am I praising them, and since you've gone full ad hominem we'll leave this there.

I didn’t do any of it singlehanded, I did it as a civil servant as part of that government you just slagged off for having no commitment and not doing much.

Btw, saying what I have done isn’t an ad hominem attack on you. It was actually in response to your ad hominem attack on me:
This: *you're offering nothing beyond accepting we're all fucked. Brilliant. is an ad hominem. *

They have done stuff to make it happen.

What have JSO done other than sitting on the road like prats?

Dont be so unfair, Jb.
The fantastically compassionate, bright, articulate people of JSO who are out there to shed light on what we are all up to, very kindly agreed to move out of sitting in the road after someone showed them evidence they were going to an appointment. That was so kind of them.

A lot of ppl on here are only bothered about the NHS when they can blame the patient.

crackofdoom · 21/07/2023 19:40

I'm not "terrified" of JSO protestors.

I am, however, terrified about runaway climate change.

I can't get worked up about a few people sitting in the road when our planet is literally on fire.

Sadly, I think that, although there is always a very faint chance that my children could find themselves in an ambulance briefly held up by protestors, it's far more likely that in the future they will face food shortages, flooding, sea level rises and political instability caused by climate change. Again, that's something I'm far more worried about. But again, as long as you're all right, Jack....🙄
