We have really messed up horrifically, haven't we.

I am scared its too late to put right

Message your MP and every orgnistion you buy from to demand action

I'd love to hear what you think MPs in the UK could do about this even if they wanted to.

Emmamoo89 - are you a farmer?

The same rainforests that are cut down to create the food that feeds the animals that we then eat.

Im afraid it’s absolutely true that eating meat and dairy is higher carbon than plant based. But you don’t have to be all or nothing. Start small. Have a meat free day a week or save meat til the weekend. More plants in your diet is sooo good for your health too.

I'm sorry but I couldn't have a meat free day my dad's a butcher I've grown up on it 🤣 had the best home cooked meals. I got fed very well.

We need to have proper plans for 40C temperatures. Air conditioned buildings being available to those who cannot manage heat easily. Bosses not forcing people into an office when they can work from home for a few days. Outdoor venues closed or limited at the height of the day. To give examples.

How do we managed the mass migration from areas of the world that have become unliveable?

Global use of AC is one reason we have global warming.

People who cannot cope with the heat will die, 60k across Europe died last year alone.

Inkpotlover · 18/07/2023 09:28

Yep, we've left it too late. We knew what was happening and we did nothing. But I suspect most people in the UK won't give a toss until the mass migration to the north from nations in the southern hemisphere after it becomes too hot to be inhabited.

BansheeofInisherin · 18/07/2023 09:29

@Emmamoo89 that's entirely your choice. I just get fed up with the argument that eating less meat means eating fake meat or avocadoes or almond milk because that is not how most cultures that eat less meat live. I don't eat fake meat.

Do all the ‘elites’ in their private jets stop flying? 🤔
Nope - why not? Because they’re spinning you a load of crap that’s why.

The elites that are smart enough are buying up land that will be less affected though, right?

Your MP is there to represent your views in parliament. If enough constituents express concerns it’s more likely they will raise the issue and vote in that direction when the opportunity arises - because they want to stay as your MP.

Ha ha ha. My grandad smoked all
his life and lived to 100 so I’m off to light one up! 😉

So did mine. Was a proper heavy smoker. I think its more luck of the draw. Not your lifestyle

It’s a heatwave in Europe in summer that is being hyped by the media to push an agenda. By all means live in fear and punish yourself but do know that all of the UN’s modelling to date has been incorrect. The earth has been warming and cooling since time began and this is no different.

You won't have a choice. If the areas that produce crops to feed animals become uninhabitable because of scorching temps, the food supply chain will be hugely affected. We'll all be living on crickets for protein.

It's too late, but let's face it you have mumsnetters who can't use a towel more than once, having heating on at 25 degrees in winter, and drive their range rovers 1/4 mile to the shops.

This is so true, I often read on here where the washing machine is on more than twice a day for an average family and I have wondered if my family, 2 working adults and two children, must have gone about being mucky as I don't recall doing that!

The impact of humans on the planet has not been insignficant. Giraffes did not think up agriculture, cats didn't build roads, fish didn't mine fossil fuels, never has a parrot owned a car or shopped at John Lewis.

This isn't natural climate change. It's man-made. That would be us.

I didn't say our impact was insignificant. I said ''we'' are insignificant. Humans. I don't think we matter.

My post said ''we can't reverse what we've done'. I know we've done it.

My point about the Earth changing is - that it's changed in the past before we came along. It's changing because of us. And it will change again when we're gone probably. All things change.

Our local dairy farm helps capture carbon as the cows graze on pasture.

…and the methane?…

Nope. Not too late. We still have time to avoid hitting catastrophic tipping points that will make it irreversible- but we all need to start doing more;

9 things you can do about climate change

With so many experts on climate change here at Imperial, many people ask us what they personally can do about it?

When I walk kids to school, and see 100s of drop offs in oversized cars (despite catchment of c. 2km), or when you try to cycle and the attitude of drivers is toxic... Then you realise how far down the list of priorities anything climate related is.

Probably somewhere on the list after some Z list celeb's boob job.

That's our society.

The sad truth is we as individuals can't make any difference by not using cars or changing our diets. It's fine beyond that. Even if millions in the UK changed their habits it wouldn't have an impact. We need global territories (China) and industries to make huge changes - going vegan won't make a joy of difference even if we all do it.

I don't completely agree .. but you are right that organisations and industry changing will have the biggest impact.
But did you know, that if every person in China lived the same way that we do in the West (driving cars, using consumable products etc), we would need three earths to provide us with enough resources.
We are terribly wasteful in first world countries and whilst people making changes aren't the whole solution, what we do as individuals definitely matters.

Is this not exactly the reason we're in this mess. People refusing to give up their lifestyles.

Nobody needs to eat soy in place of meat. We can eat vegetables.

Most soy is fed to animals that we eat as meat.

You're not wrong in general, but specifically about the jet stream - it's primarily driven by the coriolis force and prevailing winds. So it would pretty much take the earth to stop spinning to make the jet stream actually fail.

There's no hope that the uk will get colder. It'll only get hotter. I hate the heat and have a genuine fear response when I read about an upcoming heatwave. I used to say nothing would make me leave London but this June I had genuine wobbles - imagining moving somewhere in Northern Scotland to cool down...!

But it feels colder to me, winter was absolutely freezing and this summer has had more cool days than warm.
I can't believe I have my full duvet on and still use my heater done says
