We have really messed up horrifically, haven't we.

I am scared its too late to put right

Ever wondered what happened to David Bellamy?

"I’m sceptical about man-made climate change. There’s absolutely no proof that carbon dioxide will kill us all. It’s not a poison, it’s the most important gas in the world. Carbon dioxide is an airborne fertiliser. How can farmers grow increasing amounts of food without a rise in CO2?”

"The 80-year old environmentalist and former broadcaster, admitted that his scepticism signalled the end of his career as he had known it.

“From that moment, I really wasn’t welcome at the BBC,” he said.

“They froze me out, because I don’t believe in global warming. My career dried up. I was thrown out of my own conservation groups and I got spat at in London.”

Mr Bellamy said things first began to change in 1996 when he spoke out against wind farms during one of his regular appearances on Blue Peter.

“That was the beginning really,” he told the Daily Mail. “From that moment, I was not welcome at the BBC.”

“I worked with the Wildlife Trusts for 52 years,” he said “And when they dropped me, they didn’t even tell me. They didn’t have the guts.

“I read about it in the newspapers. Can you believe it?

“Now they don’t want to be anywhere near me. But what are they doing? The WWF might have saved a few pandas, but what about the forests?

“What have Greenpeace done?”

Mr Bellamy’s wife Rosemary admitted that they had both been devastated by the developments.

“It did upset us terribly,” she said. “But we pretended not to be upset, didn’t we David? The best thing to do was not to talk about it. So we didn’t.

It’s been very difficult, because he does feel strongly about things.”

Mr Bellamy insisted that he had no regrets about being so outspoken and had not changed his opinions about global warming.

“I still say it’s poppycock,” he said. "For the last 16 years, temperatures have been going down and the carbon dioxide has been going up and the crops have got greener and grow quicker.

"We’ve done plenty to smash up the planet, but there’s been no global warming caused by man.

“If you believe it, fine. But I don’t and there’s thousands like me."

He added: "Who cares if they’ve put me on the back burner? I can still talk to my flowers, which are all fine and growing amazingly and say, “Thank you very much, David!”

Yes Bellamy was a sceptic but so what? he represented a tiny minority of scientists, even back then, science moves on, your quoting stuff from over 25years ago.

As i said to you earlier, open your eyes, the evidence is all around you, our Pershore plum tree fruits earlier and earlier, in the 70/80s, it was end of August/Early September, today i'm picking fruit.

We ve Tuna off the coast of Cornwall, used to be Mackerel, ticks? inundated with them, first ones appear in February now, winter is not cold enough to keep them off, we just dont get the frosts or the duration we used too.

The world is clearly getting warmer. I don’t see what handwringing and insulting others about it on mumsnet because they their views don’t absolutely match yours achieves though.

Ultimately people are going to continue to go on holiday, move around and live their lives. There are no solutions here other than blaming our government of one tiny country who if they did what is being demanded would be voted out.

Life is about to get tougher across the globe. Interestingly a lot of the handwringing is about preventing deaths, well there being too many people on the planet is one of the problems. In the grand scheme of the earth we are all pretty insignificant.

midgetastic · 26/07/2023 07:33

People won't be taking holidays for much longer unless there are changes

There are solutions

But you need a reasonable number of people to agree given the current political set up

You need a radical overhaul of the economy so that money goes to making green living cheaper , not to fossil fuel companies ; so that people can afford the bus / an EV /healthy diet which means taking from the rich to give to the poor

You need to be a world leading country that others respect , or reasonably self sufficient , which all rules the uk out

I think it's a game of chicken - when one county goes bold others will follow

Teateaandmoretea · 26/07/2023 07:37

Ridiculous sweeping statement based on nothing at all. Including what these ‘changes’ are going to be. If some of plot is the evolution of the planet the mythical ‘changes’ won’t have the impact you think anyway.

CMZ2018 · 26/07/2023 07:44

Fantastic be nice to have a warm summer again

midgetastic · 26/07/2023 07:46

Why won't people holiday?

Have you thought what happens when Bangladesh goes under water ? The current migrant crisis is the tip of the iceberg. No space on the beaches

Where will you holiday ? When New York is under water and the med is turned into an extension of the Sahara ?

How will you afford to holiday when all your money is spent on food as yields drop and prices rise?

Of course all out war is more likely - people didn't take holidays in WW2 did they ?

Solutions
They are well known so I won't give you details because I don't think you want solutions

Stop using fossil fuels
Stop eating meat and diary
And we have to add carbon capture and storage to the list now because things have gone too far - in other words it will cost more to control climate change and adapt to the changing world because you left it too long

I didn’t ask why people won’t holiday. Because they will. Possibly fewer will be able to afford it, but people will still holiday. The places they go will possibly change.

You offer no solutions as I apparently don’t want them, well that’s convenient as there aren’t any. Your meat and dairy suggestion 🤦🏻‍♀️.

The problem is that all of your hyperbole makes people think ‘better get to Greece now then’. As most people are short termist.

midgetastic · 26/07/2023 08:06

I gave you the short very simple solution
You couldn't even be bothered to read that it seems
Ah well

Teateaandmoretea · 26/07/2023 08:09

You have no idea how they will work in practice, because they won’t.

I think she’s suggesting we go back to something like the British Empire.

When actually other countries would just seize wealth for themselves if we impoverish ourselves over this now.

Wow. Independent will never have an article about impact of having kids on planet. Not even those who have 4 and more but it's ok to post about dog because dog owners are selfish even those whom dogs provide old age companionship or mental health benefits but people with 4 kids are not selfish.

AmaraTamara · 26/07/2023 13:50

Granny Olive, like your name, Bellamy is a granny and his scepticism belongs to 70s. His views are been debunked, you are quoting conversations from 25 years ago. Science has moved on. We have better models, data, and it's been proven time and time again that human caused, catastrophic climate change, as well as other planetary boundary breaches, resource depletion, poisons are real, factual and it is now time not to keep discussing whether they're real, but to focus on what we can do.

Daftasabroom · 26/07/2023 14:34

@Grannyolive you should be pretty ashamed of your previous comments minimizing the wild fires and heat wave now 40 people have died

YellowBookPinkBananas · 31/07/2023 12:09

@Grannyolive just say you are right and this is all a load of baloney, the planet is very over populated and we should be taking steps to stop using so many resources. You don't have to believe in climate change to see that we use too much plastics, have taken too long to invest in renewable energy. We waste too much. The list goes on. The way we live now a days is not sustainable. Changes need to happen regardless of Climate change.
