Where to live in Blackpool

Hi everyone

Hope that everyone has had a restful weekend Posting here for traffic.

We live in London but My DH has recently gotten a job in one of the hospitals in Blackpool so will be based there 3 days a week and needs a base which we can visit during holidays etc

Where do you suggest? We have 2 pre teen children of the same gender and are a family of ethnic minority so we want somewhere we can feel comfortable

We visited and liked poulton de fyre which was really posh, and were also in central Blackpool near the beach which obviously is very touristy and possibly out of our price range

As this will be a 2nd property, our max budget is £120,000, though not sure of where to settle, children's school will remain in London but want a place that we can spend all school holidays etc the property will be a bit of an investment so also need somewhere that will hold it's value etc

I have looked at Layton which seems more affordable but not sure of what the area will be like eg is it diverse, nice, quiet etc?

If anyone knows the area please advise

It’s not a very diverse area I’m afraid but I think for your budget, I’d go for Thornton Cleveleys. Poulton is so lovely though!

VestaTilley · 16/07/2023 20:34

Don’t buy as an investment unless planning on keeping it 40 years - it’s not the kind of area likely to benefit from much house price movement.

The wider countryside out in Lancs is lovely. Blackpool not so much…I wouldn’t plan on spending long there in the holidays…

Poulton Le Fylde, as you suggest, is a better bet. But still…

AlfietheSchnauzer · 16/07/2023 20:34

A very, very long way from it

I will take a look at Thornton, is it still close to the teaching hospital?

Avoid central Blackpool. Possibly Poulton or Thornton or St Anne's if you want the beach, much much better than Blackpool

AlfietheSchnauzer · 16/07/2023 20:37

Blackpool is an absolute dustbin filled with crime & deprivation and it's a crying shame given its history. Blackpool was a magical place to me when I was a kid. Now I wouldn't have my child there even for a short visit. Vile

Dacadactyl · 16/07/2023 20:37

Lytham St Anne's is nice.

Blackpool itself is DIRE.

What do you mean? Are you saying to avoid? If we don't buy anything, my DH will have to pay hotel fees for the days he is working there

Lytham is lovely. But maybe not within your price range.

Or go in land.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 16/07/2023 20:39

Wrea Green.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 16/07/2023 20:40

@Tjit DEEP, DEEP deprivation, filth and exceptionally high levels of crime

Redglitter · 16/07/2023 20:41

Blackpool is awful. I wouldn't even consider living there. St Annes is lovely & has a much nicer beach if youre looking for a beach.

There's a lot of 2 bed flats in St Annes for around your budget.

LeviJeanQueen · 16/07/2023 20:44

Blackpool is awful, genuinely one of the worst places I’ve been to in the U.K. You would be mad to buy a house there.

Myownone · 16/07/2023 20:45

It’s not the nicest place but TBH for a second home that wouldn’t trouble me much. There are some OKish areas near the park.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 16/07/2023 20:48

Copy & paste from blackpooljsna.org.uk

"The 2019 index ranks Blackpool as the most deprived of 317 Local Authority areas in England, based on both the average LSOA score and concentration of deprivation measures, and is also now the most deprived Local Authority based on the lesser-used rank of average score measure"

If I was in your shoes, I would do one of two things. 1) Explore the possibility of him commuting from London or perhaps getting a place in somewhere like Whitehaven in the Lakes and him commuting from there or somewhere half way between London & Blackpool.
Or 2) Have your DH look for another job and ditch the entire idea.

At no point would I consider living or holidaying anywhere close to Blackpool

Lytham is lovely. This would be in your price eange. Maybe bunk beds for 2nd room?

This is St Anne's not Lytham

OhSmitty · 16/07/2023 20:49

A bungalow in Cleveleys. Quiet streets with retired people but access to the tram to get you into Blackpool as needed.

HermioneWeasley · 16/07/2023 20:50

Kirkham?

blackpool itself is awful, just awful. I can’t believe your husband couldn’t get a healthcare job in London?

No different to any other town though. Shops cafes parks but it has a lovely beach, pool etc

It would be far nicer for a base than Blackpool

Have you ever been to Lytham St Anne's? It's very nice and although near Blackpool, it is nothing like it and isn't deprived.

Tjit · 16/07/2023 20:53

Everyone is making me scared about our plans! I will have a look at the suggested areas

AlfietheSchnauzer · 16/07/2023 20:54

@Housewife2010 Yes I have been to Lytham and there wasn't anything for families. Remember, OP is not just looking for a base for her DH, she implied that they also want it to function as a holiday home for the family too. If I understood the OP correctly that is

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 16/07/2023 20:54

JayAlfredPrufrock · 16/07/2023 20:39

Wrea Green.

Wrea Green must be about the most expensive place you could buy though, surely?

@Tjit yes Cleveleys is close to Blackpool, as is St Anne’s, they just kind of roll into Blackpool.

Would you consider a park home?
