40C - 49C forecast for Europe next week - that is ridiculously hot

‘I’ve never seen heat this bad. It’s not normal’: Italy struggles as temperature tops 40C | Italy | The Guardian

It's scary to think of these temperatures - not at all good for the human body.

I hope people who are going abroad over summer are prepared - or at least aware of how to stay safe in such heat.

The other worry is that the electricity infrastructure won't cope with the added demand for air conditioning and there will be widespread power failures.

Every time you think about booking booking a holiday to Dubai think about the migrant workforce outside in that same heat.

Anyway. Yes it’s hot.
Climate change or not there’s a million threads on here where people wash sheets every few days because “ it feels nice”, Style and Beauty is just endless buying of new stuff, people are driving their kids to classes everywhere then sending them to far flung Uni’s., buying food imported from across the world.. Good luck with us changing anything. Clearly no one wants to live like peasants.

Most of the migrant workforce are from hot countries. It's mandated by law that you can't work outside in the middle of the day in the hottest months.

I don't see a loss of power as a bad thing. We've only had electricity for just over 100 years, and many old world nations are set up to cope without it still (we haven't destroyed all our old buildings and heritage skills are being revived)

This is low down on my worry list too. Electricity I can learn to live without. Food and water are essential. It’s famine, drought and war that scare me. At this rate we may see this in my lifetime. My DC are going to have a much tougher time then I have had.

Is it denial or is it lack of awareness? I monitor the Daily Mail. Up until the last week, if that’s all you read, you’d be forgiven for not having a clue about the scary situation we are in.

I guess It’s probably both. That’s why XR and JSO are are asking media to report honestly about the climate emergency

user9630721458 · 16/07/2023 19:28

@LittleApartmentOnThePrairie Yes, it's true that it depends what media you consume. I think BBC has reported on this, and other channels. It's certainly important for journalists to report on this more.
If power cuts were significant it would be quite chaotic. Will we all be able to access our bank accounts? How will we contact people if we can't charge phones? What would be the impact on shops, factories, things like water companies and sewage systems? I don't know enough about what the impacts would be, but it sounds quite messy in the short term.

What worries me is that these cities WONT run out of water because the will simply drain the resources from areas surrounding the cities or divert rivers. China especially worries me on this front.

This is a major issue, which has the potential to spark conflict. Already happening with regards to dams in Turkey/Iraq and Ethiopia/Sudan/Egypt. Agree re China. Frightening.

to support a garden and fruit trees in summer

But you can't possibly have that in your yard. All the bees, petals and other creatures😱 Can't tolerate that possibly. They all touch the fruit so it's inedible!

(joking, but from what I gather from many, nature is not welcome near the houses)

It really is sad - no butterflies and bugs, but plastic micro particles and a chemical stench. And fruit has to be heavily sprayed and wrapped in plastic…

The taste alone of home grown fruit should be enough to convert anyone. A small apple tree will be laden with fruit in a few years, while a plastic or gravel garden deteriorates.

Young British man on tv this morning. He's bought four huge 747 airliners to start his new airline. Never fail to be amazed at human stupidity.

For completeness….

There’s a group setting up a cargo operation out of the UK operating 7477s, hence my previous comment.

I have now seen this AMs Uk press on line and I see somebody is proposing buying some 380s..(they are cheap as chips ATM) to operate out of Gatwick starting next year…I’m guessing that’s the individual who was doing the interviews yesterday….

“Never fail to be amazed at human stupidity.” Agreed, but in this case not just stupidity with regard to climate change.

HTH.

notimagain · 17/07/2023 07:17

747s.

Just to get us back on topic - good morning from Greece, it’s hot but manageable today

Fully agree with you. I think some problem can be typical size of gardens here ao planting tree takes up lots of space.
But planting other stuff is always doable.
Sadly ao many people here freak out about anything alive and moving in their garden🤷

Hellokittymania · 17/07/2023 09:55

Spain today, hello also from Greece, I am in the mainland in central Greece, and was just in some nice cool air conditioning, but now I’m at home, back to no AC, and it feels very hot… I think this weekend will be another hot one, but hopefully on Friday I will have air conditioning at home

hiding5675687 · 17/07/2023 17:55

Wild fires will be bad if these regions do not get rain.

It’s really not about what time of year you go on holiday. That’s inconsequential in the current emergency

Well I don't disagree but who is going to change their lifestyle. People come on here and justify sitting on the pavements in their polluting SUVs with the engines running, so they're hardly going to give up their beach and ski-ing holidays, are they? Not until they are compelled to.

lieselotte · 18/07/2023 08:35

And governments do nothing - for an example, see the ludicrousness of flying empty flights around Europe during covid to keep slots!

lieselotte · 18/07/2023 08:35

Oh and when hosepipes come in, people whine. Instead of thinking that maybe it's best not to waste water. No, I am entitled to use it and the water companies are rubbish. The water companies are rubbish, but you are not entitled to waste water.

Not sure how much of that really went on.

Most authorities gave exemptions to the usual "use it or lose it" rule set...

KarmaStar · 18/07/2023 11:48

Because people will not listen about climate control.
Stop eating meat.
Plastics
Flights
Gas guzzling cars
Recycle
Do your bit.
I fear it's too late though.

The thing that pisses me off was the small changes that were needed years ago are now huge changes as we continued to build this world of un sustainability.
