40C - 49C forecast for Europe next week - that is ridiculously hot

‘I’ve never seen heat this bad. It’s not normal’: Italy struggles as temperature tops 40C | Italy | The Guardian

It's scary to think of these temperatures - not at all good for the human body.

I hope people who are going abroad over summer are prepared - or at least aware of how to stay safe in such heat.

Dd is off to Italy for 3 weeks on Monday. How can you prepare for that sort of heat? I’ve bought her some factor 50. 🤷‍♀️

She needs to hide from the sun & heat! She'll find the Italians will also be hiding and thinking tourists are insane as they tend to still potter around. Keep the blinds closed in the room and keep the sun out. Drink plenty of water. Most restaurants get busy with The locals around 10pm when it's cooled down enough to go out and eat.

When it hits the 40s it may not really cool down enough. I've just got back when it was hitting 36 in the day and the town looked like it was deserted until 9pm when everyone just seemed to appear out of nowhere 😂 I was on a working trip so only left to go to an office with aircon and back again. It was too hot to walk anywhere until at least 8pm when it was still 29c but had a nice breeze.

And how do you adapt your lifestyle to that and what would you suggest tourists do?

China has recognised the problem though and are making huge investments in renewable energy. Entire mountain sides are getting covered in solar panels. Could you imagine the outcry from Nimbys if we tried that here?

LisaD1 · 16/07/2023 08:49

We are in Turkey where it reached 44 yesterday. We’ve worn factor 50 constantly, drank plenty and had a great time. Locals seem to be coping well, lots of water about and literally every few steps there’s water for the street animals (and food).

Theres one couple in the same hotel who literally look like they’ve been torched, are drinking at 9am and I imagine are going to be unwell at some point 🙈

FingerishGloves · 16/07/2023 08:49

I've been doing what I can for 40 years now and I'm so sad to see the direction society has gone in. Feeling smug doesn't cut it when it's obvious that the climate is beginning to spiral, as we were warned.

It should be enough for each person and each family to do what they can to make a difference. All together we should be able to make change happen. But people haven't acted or taken the threat seriously in any great numbers.

Governments are still funding motorways and runways and not implementing ideas like 15 minutes cities and house retrofitting. My vote hasn't had an impact. When greens get elected they don't have the powers they need and decisions are made based on lobbying and financial interests.

I have some connections with 1 percenters and on a personal level they shrug and believe that their money will protect them, and they might actually be right - the 0.1% at any rate. The wealthy people I know were warned to stay indoors due to air pollution from wildfires and within three weeks they had relocated via private plane to a newly purchased house in a ski resort.

I'm expecting the most distressing part of this for us in Northern Europe will be uncontrollable migration. It's going to be very painful.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

cakeorwine · 16/07/2023 08:50

If you have spent 100s or 1000s on a holiday, I don't think people will want to spend the day inside a hotel away from the heat.

I heard something interesting about a white paint developed by scientists, said to cool buildings and the surrounding temps. Not sure it's available yet, but sounds promising. We really need to radically change lifestyles and throw a lot of investment into green, alternative technologies and solutions. It's insane how we just carry on destroying our only home.

Plants and ivy make a massive difference in helping keep buildings cool. They are obviously beneficial to wildlife

France have nailed this. All new car parks have to have solar roofs (they are like canopies rather than buildings). This acts in two ways, it shelters the cars keeping them cool and obviously creates power.
all new buildings must have a green roof or solar.

in this country solar roofs were discussed (some time ago) as mandatory, it was decided that as it “only” contributed 50% it wasn’t worth it.

Its not for the whole time but I would! I have family who love in Italy, I visit a lot. You do things early and late but nothing during the day. My husband (Italian) will not book a holiday there for July & August as it's notoriously to hot to tourist.

Obv your DD won't want to miss out but on the days it's super hot, it'll be too hot to do anything more than sit during the day. If she pushes through doing touristy things in the middle of the day 10-4 ish. Then she risks ending up in hospital because the human body cannot deal with such heat whilst exerting energy. She needs to be very careful on those really hot days!

I can only answer from experience a question in which you have asked. What you or your DD does with that information is up to you. But she will find the place will be deserted if locals. Hopefully it's not going to be in the 40s for days on end. I really hope it's short lived. Many touristy places are open later into the evening during the summer time, so she won't be missing out going later on in the day.

I agree but the message isn’t getting through. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to add 3 screenshots from Flightradar of tens of thousands of flights all over the world.
We’ve know about the pollution caused by planes for sometime now but as far as I know there are more flights than ever.

SoShallINever · 16/07/2023 09:05

The irony though.
"My holiday (that we burned a ton of carbon flying to) is ruined by climate change".
People investing in air conditioning without any joined up thinking to see that this just makes the problem worse.
We actually don't deserve this planet.

Also for some perspective UK is responsibile for less than 1% of global GHG emissions with China, the biggest emitter, responsible for around 30%. 2nd biggest emitter USA is at around 14%, 3rd India around 7%

How does that compare per person?

China and India have massive populations

The UK has a small population relative to the size of the world population.
The USA is a big emitter compared to head of population.

Not since the Ice Age. You may be fine with shit being difficult to the point of high child mortality and huge, unnecessary loss of lives but I want better for my children.

Most parents and grandparents do.

Plenty of perceived near end of world stuff between ice and and now- just because looking back we know it wasn’t ‘that bad’ doesn’t mean humans at the time wondered if it might be the end of days.

Of course I want better for my children. But I would face possible adversity (and possible good life) over no kids at all. Thankfully most people over history have chosen that too or you wouldn’t be here.

This isn't adversity, this is the slide into crisis. Wake up.

The message isn’t getting through, you are right. The air industry lobby well. It gets mainstream media air time to greenwash us all. We are marketed into wanting to travel. It’s really hard to give up. Until you make the link;

Do I need this holiday abroad more than I need food/water/safety? It’s a no brainer then.
