40C - 49C forecast for Europe next week - that is ridiculously hot

‘I’ve never seen heat this bad. It’s not normal’: Italy struggles as temperature tops 40C | Italy | The Guardian

It's scary to think of these temperatures - not at all good for the human body.

I hope people who are going abroad over summer are prepared - or at least aware of how to stay safe in such heat.

The Italian government is advising people to stay indoors during the day. Be in by 11 at the latest and stay inside until evening

Blimey, she’s going to have a fun three weeks!

It’s a good point about humidity. I was at a science installation that created the predicted conditions in that area of the UK in 2050 - so hot and humid. Hard to catch your breath. And it’s happening much more quickly than predicted. Scared the shit out of me. And we are all sleepwalking into it.

Sunnysal · 15/07/2023 21:46

I live in Spain and much like you have heating in cold countries, you have air con in hot countries. Its really not that bad below 40deg......more than that ugh...

KitchenSinkLlama · 15/07/2023 21:47

I'm in Greece. No one with any sense is outside until late afternoon/early evening. Our house has aircon but we only use it as necessary- luckily the house is v old with hugely think walls and high ceilings. The village doesn't come to life until late in the day. It is challenging but if you are sensible you will be ok.

the poor wildlife.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 15/07/2023 21:48

Just checked and she’s off to Milan first for a few days which is 34-35, then Florence which is initially forecast to be 38-39 and then a few days later getting down to 35. So hot, but not inferno temps!

CatsOnTheChair · 15/07/2023 21:49

I used to say (once acclimatized) under 40C, sensible clothing, water, going slowly, and staying indoors 11-4 things were OK. But we had AC everywhere.
Over 40C, and just being was tough.

Without AC - which I would guess much of Europe doesn't have everywhere - I don't fancy those temperatures. It will be very tough. We used to cool the house to 27C.

The one thing that Brits on holiday could take note of is covering skin helps keep you cool. I used to wear linen blend trousers and a loose shirt. Much cooler than shorts and vest top.

Okay today.
What's the plan as the temperatures increase year on.year?

Duckskitbank · 15/07/2023 21:53

It’s Italy at the end of July, of course it’s hot. It’s not new.

In Italy people have been advised to stay inside between 11am and 6pm.
Ive lived in Greece and nobody apart from tourists goes out in the midday sun.

@HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas i can't believe you are moaning about your precious daughters holiday being ruined due to a heatwave that the whole of Europe is dealing with... Sensibly. Stay out of the sun. Not difficult to work out surely.

You sit in 40 degree heat with just a fan then. I’m guessing you live in Britain ? If so, you don’t get to judge others use of air con. It was bloody freezing in England today !

I think there might be a link between the current heatwave in Europe and the current weather in the UK.

Imagine your reaction of someone from a hot country told you not to use your heating in December because it was contributing to climate change. Ridiculous

Of course there is. My point is that it is hypocritical to point out how air con is a bad idea when the poster does not have to live in extreme heat.

Climate/weather is complicated...
Climate warming is real, as is increasingly obvious to even the most sceptical.
Unless you're lucky to live in one of those regions currently affected by unseasonably wet/windy weather.
Don't sweat, it'll soon be super hot in Wilts

DontMowMyMeadow · 15/07/2023 21:28

That's the nub of the issue though.
Humidity versus temp.
40°C with 10% humidity is easy.
40°C with 50% humidity ?
50°C and 50% humidity?
There is a rapidly increasing amount of moisture in the atmosphere. Antarctica has melted much faster than expected, and glaciers around the world, the Artic, Greenland.
Hot, dry atmosphere is okay for humans as we cool by perspiration. Once you introduce humidity it becomes much more problematic.
Once it's too hot and humid your organs literally broil inside you. That's what death by heat is.

This!
40degrees with very low humidity is hot, but nice
30degrees with very high humidity is unbearable

I presume this heatwave is skipping the UK though?
