40C - 49C forecast for Europe next week - that is ridiculously hot

‘I’ve never seen heat this bad. It’s not normal’: Italy struggles as temperature tops 40C | Italy | The Guardian

It's scary to think of these temperatures - not at all good for the human body.

I hope people who are going abroad over summer are prepared - or at least aware of how to stay safe in such heat.

What happened to the Ozone layer anyway?

After the implementation of the Montreal Protocol in the 80's it stopped getting bigger and started to recover. Proof that we can do things to make a difference.Grin

That is an excellent result. One disaster averted!

Do you think the temps have changed?

I used to live in Italy and every summer we had a spell of 40+. Can't remember headlines and warnings...
Show quote history
For me the difference is how long each "spell" lasts and that we are getting them both earlier and later than before. A few years ago (5 maybe) we had over a week of 43 in September. That never used to happen. This year we has almost 40 in May. Even in summer, the 40+ used to be for three or four days then drop back to 35-39. Last year we had twenty consecutive days of 43. Each year a new maximum is broken. I think the récord is about 48 in Córdoba.
And we arent getting the rain we need in winter. Last winter was unusually dry.

You can spend time debating this but it’s really inconsequential. The science is absolutely unequivocal. Decades of research and applying various models, globally show that climate change is real, msn made and is now in an emergency state. If we don’t act now we will reach certain ‘tipping points’ after which there is no going back. The predicted changes are not only starting to happen but are happening more speedily and ferociously than predicted. The worlds scientist are in agreement. There is no debate left to have. Honestly. I sooooo wish there was. But there isn’t.

I think travel providers are going to have to change their terms and conditions to allow people to change dates if a forecast is over 35 degrees (maybe 40).

You can't expect people to go ahead with holidays if it is that hot.

Totally agree. I have seen the changes in twenty years here in andalucia. It always used to be hot in the summer but the climate is changing and it's becoming more extreme. We are heading for climate break down and we are starting to see the consequences now.

I was trying to explain as someone who lives here that yes it's always been hot but what is starting to happen isnt normal.

As for trees - what on earth is wrong with local councils like Plymouth and Sheffield who have deliberately set out to cut down as many as possible?

Did you read the article?

I did. Do you have ivy on your house?

it needs keeping in check, like all forms of gardening. It doesn’t cause damp, it helps keep the building cool, it is great for wildlife.

Keeping it in check is very labour intensive and involves a lot of time up a ladder. We have plaster is falling off on the inside of the one remaining wall we have with ivy on it. This is due to damp. It is damp because the wall needs repointing on the outside because the ivy has pulled out the mortar. We can’t do this because the ivy needs stripping off to do this, but we can’t do that because there are birds nesting in it.

As you like RHS links…

”common or English ivy(Hedera helix sp.) supports itself by aerial roots and where these penetrate cracks or joints they may cause structural damage”

https://www.rhs.org.uk/prevention-protection/ivy-on-buildings

I don’t have it on my house as I rent. I do have it on my shed, it has bats roosting in it, the bees adore it and the fact you have birds nesting all helps.

I had it on my old (rented) house when we moved in and it caused a leak in dds room, chopped it back a bit and it was fine.

im not saying it’s perfect or a cure all. But it is something that helps.

Yes. What IS wrong with them? Mature trees are so important.

Just read this. Shit got serious. TIME TO CHANGE…

The world has just gone through a remarkable experience. It endured the hottest week ever recorded between 3-10 July this year. And meteorologists say there is more to come – a lot more.

The Earth has not experienced anything like it since instrumental measures of air temperatures began in the 1850s, the World Meteorological Organisation revealed last week. “We are in uncharted territory and that is worrying news for the planet,” said Prof Christopher Hewitt, the WMO’s director of climate services.

Or people will stop going on holiday to Southern Europe in summer.
Those with school kids will go May or Oct and others will go in September.
After a couple of Med holidays where was far too hot to move away from the pool we now stick to Northern Europe in summer

Bloody hell. Have you not read the full thread? I’m quite gobsmacked by this.

Quote from todays paper about the heatwave and record breaking temperatures;

As a result, many scientists warn that this year or next could see world temperatures pass the 1.5C threshold that was set by the IPCC as being the upper limit for a rise in global warming that would avoid the planet passing through meteorological tipping points that could bring irreversible changes to world weather patterns.

This means more wild fires, more extreme weather events, more increases in morbidity and mortality, more crop failures, more drought, more parts of the planet turned to desert, mass migration, conflict and wars over dwindling resources.

This is not a party political issue, or a matter of debate. This is based on decades of global research, using multiple models of climate research and on what is already happening. This is not something that others in other areas of the world are dealing with. This affects EVERY SINGLE HUMAN on earth.

It’s really not about what time of year you go on holiday. That’s inconsequential in the current emergency.

I worry more for my children and the future they face. They are mid to late teens but I wonder why anyone is having babies now when they will have a life under climate change with extreme temperatures, water and food shortages and potential unrest.

I presume you want the human race to stop reproducing then?
ok…….

On that basis, should people be allowed to change their dates if rain is forecast?

There aren't going to be holidays in the immediate future. There is going to be mass migration to cooler places like the UK, which will be struggling to stay above water because of the melting Arctic. There will be food shortages and an increase in disastrous weather events such as storms, hurricanes and flooding in the north as well as droughts and earthquakes. The earth and the climate is hugely unsettled and I don't think anywhere will be easy to live. And we can't 'adapt' because it's going to get worse. We have to change, halt the damage and rely on science and environmentalists to survive the changes that will inevitably come.

That is depressing re cutting down mature trees. Also the new builds with plastic gardens. There should be a big effort to trap water in the winter - maybe underground storage on new builds - to support a garden and fruit trees in summer. The UK only produces a small percentage of the fruit it consumed. As other growing areas are impacted by drought there are likely to be shortages.

I wish I could roll my eyes and tell you that you are being dramatic. Sadly, you are being realistic and basing your views on what anyone with any ounce of expertise is saying - based on very solid and indisputable science. 😔 Considering our very well developed brains compared to other species, we are soooo stupid.

Elephantinasandstorm · 16/07/2023 18:35

to support a garden and fruit trees in summer

But you can't possibly have that in your yard. All the bees, petals and other creatures😱 Can't tolerate that possibly. They all touch the fruit so it's inedible!

(joking, but from what I gather from many, nature is not welcome near the houses)

I live in the "middle" of Germany and have photos from my boiler, which is connected to an outside temperature censor, of 43°c and 47°c from a couple of years ago.
40°c is not unknown in the past 20 odd years.
Yes, it is hot, but as long as there is minimal humidity, there is no great impact. You just get things done early.

It's the humidity rather than the heat that's the problem, when we've been in North Africa in the mid 40s we haven't felt it as much as being in the UK at mid 30s as we had last year. The same applies in Winter, in a 'dry' climate, eg the mountains we could tolerate much lower temperatures than in drizzly cold temperatures.

A very concerning issue is cities running out of water. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-42982959.amp

What worries me is that these cities WONT run out of water because the will simply drain the resources from areas surrounding the cities or divert rivers. China especially worries me on this front.

I think there must be some mechanism in the human brain that shuts down information when it's just too alarming! Never helps to bury our heads in the sand though.
