40C - 49C forecast for Europe next week - that is ridiculously hot

‘I’ve never seen heat this bad. It’s not normal’: Italy struggles as temperature tops 40C | Italy | The Guardian

It's scary to think of these temperatures - not at all good for the human body.

I hope people who are going abroad over summer are prepared - or at least aware of how to stay safe in such heat.

We are currently in the collective denial phase. We’d rather poke fun at Just stop oil but they are just concerned people trying to wake us all up to the seriousness of this and what needs to happen.

When the shit really hits the fan, eg multiple crop failures, people will hurriedly try to make the changes that environmentalists have long been calling for. But it will be too late.

It’s just like the movie, ‘Don’t look Up.’ It is very good if you haven’t seen it.

do you mind me asking how much this cost?

My (generally clueless) boss insisted on flinging the blinds in our workspace wide open during the day in our little heatwave recently, expressing wonderment that I kept them closed. The space was roasting beyond belief by 11am. They're currently on holiday in one of the seriously hot countries mentioned. I just hope they'll come back with a reactivated brain cell and understand why I kept the blinds shut. I'm not holding my breath though.

We will probably all have to start living like the Middle East and most of the global south and get things done early in the morning, stay out of the sun in the middle of the day, wear longer looser clothing, cover up with sunscreen, long sleeves, hats and sunglasses, and socialise in the evenings.

And yes, I am sad and furious for the way migrant workers doing the dirty work in those countries are treated and made to work outside in the Middle East and have appalling living conditions. The human race in general has long since ceased to be humane, at least most of the wealthy...

Has there ever been a time in history that we could call the human race, as a group, humane?

Karrpt · 16/07/2023 03:13

"Is this in response to me? I'm not booked to go on holiday."

No Confused it was in response to the person who has booked a holiday but is now saying they won't be going. Obviously.

I think there might be a link between the current heatwave in Europe and the current weather in the UK.

It's the jet stream which has been moving progressively south, pushing the hot air down into continental Europe and allowing a cold weather pattern to hit the UK

Dd is off to Italy for 3 weeks on Monday. How can you prepare for that sort of heat? I’ve bought her some factor 50. 🤷‍♀️

Water, floaty clothes like maxi dresses or floaty trousers, keep off sun, keep inside at midday-3pm. Good deodorant (i love perspirex).

Posters on MN continue to say “Driving is a life skill, I’d never date a man who couldn’t drive”.

That's because public transport in most of UK is shit and expensive .
I got around perfectly fine and cheap at Europe. My mum takes train to work rather than car. In UK a trip to my work, and I was in a city, would be either half an hour by bus or 10 min by car... Most hilarious was an appointment 15 min by car, but 2 bus cjanges an 50min by bus....
Getying somewhere by train costs often like a night in a hotel fgs.

Yes that's what I mean I think I'd lose the money rather than be that hot. I know it sounds melodramatic but I know I'd just suffer through it rather than enjoy it. I'd be gutted but probably happier overall. Possibly in the minority though.

I'd do the same. I don't go on sunny beach holidays, as I hate the heat, and don't lie out in it. I was in cool (in both senses of the word) Stockholm in September last year. It was about 15° 😁

Holidays for me are about being away, not being somewhere hot 🤷‍♀️

Parts of Greece this week are due to be in 40s, and not much below 30 at night. That's brutal.

Yep, we’re in Greece at the moment, and even the locals are feeling it

FeelingHotHot · 16/07/2023 06:42

It really is terrifying.

I went to Puglia ten years ago and it was 38C and felt impossible. My heart breaks for anyone working in those temps then and now.

Loads of kids I know are inter-railing at the moment. Including my own. I just tell them to stay hydrated.

We only do one short-haul flight a year. But perhaps that now needs to stop. We all need to save the planet for future generations. As usual it’s the wealthy causing the most damage.

Out of interest, are ac and heating equally damaging for the environment? Anyway we switched to hot water bottles a lot this year due to CoL. Looks like that will need to continue.

Depends on the air con type and heating type. We have evaporative cooling. Doesn't work so well in high humidity but can be great on hot days. I only turn on the environmentally worse on for short periods when it's unbearable and the house needs a quick drop in temp.

i'm sure I read ac globally now has more impact as more people try & keep cool then others keep warm.

Those posters who fly abroad for holidays, how do you feel about your contribution to climate change?

I feel embarrassed and guilty about my contribution to climate change, even with our one European flight a year. But it’s all too easy for my mind to switch to the many people I know who do several long-haul holidays a year, and the bankers who are alway jetting to NY for urgent meetings. It’s easier to blame those doing ‘worse’ than us, than look at our own actions.

Freshair1 · 16/07/2023 06:52

I asked about flights on another thread recently and was hounded off. Apparently cos the super rich are still jetting that makes it ok for us to continue contributing as well. Like..... For god's sake.

TheBlinkOfAnEye · 16/07/2023 06:52

How much worse is a short haul flight than one where I drive four hours away though?

Depends if your car has passengers or not. And what you're measuring as worse. And how you got to and from the airports.

JustDanceAddict · 16/07/2023 07:09

It’s scary what’s going on in the world.
when it was 40c in England last year for a couple of days it was unbearable. My house gets too hot so the best place at home was in the shade in the garden - even then it wasn’t great.
id try to go out after 2pm if I wasn’t working, to air con shops!
I am glad we went on a uk holiday this year, not sure I’d want to go to southern Europe in the height of the summer any more

I do think there is some racism at play. Climate change is effecting and will affect those of colour more. I think, subconsciously, there is an ‘othering’ and a denial that it will affect wealthy white people. But it will.

I think privilege is at play for sure. Here is the UK we have come to take a certain standard of living for granted. We like to consume produce from far flung places, regardless of the impact on the community that produces it.

Totally

Not since the Ice Age. You may be fine with shit being difficult to the point of high child mortality and huge, unnecessary loss of lives but I want better for my children.

Most parents and grandparents do.

Actually it is much more recent than that. Have you not heard of the mini ice age that lasted several centuries until the mid 19th century?

Personally I don't drive, always buy second hand if possible, never fly so my conscience is clear on having a family now. Not sure there is ever a great time to have one anyway.

Tbf it is ridiculous when small people who average 11 tons a year are told they are killing the planet and should be ashamed and stop everything when likes of Taylor Swift create 8000+ tons a year.
We can all sit at home but at the end of the day the impact will be so minimal it's understandable why people say "fuck it".
Also many if us see it's beyond point of return. Changes should have happen 30 years ago

AlwaysFrazzled88 · 16/07/2023 07:14

Really pointless to say people shouldn't be having children. I don't mean a family of six children but we need some born. Some countries have a massively decreased birth rate including Greece. I wonder if those preaching would give up their foreign holidays?

parasols need to make a uk comeback - white ones will keep a lot of heat off the head

I used a parasol (lined) last year and have ordered a golf-sized one as its canopy wasn't quite big enough. It was hot on some days in June and I really was grateful for it (not the temps in parts of Europe of course)

I saw someone using a Kohler black-lined golf umbrella last week (not here) and that sent me down a rabbit hole of looking for large UV- protective sun umbrellas. The (not Kohler) one I ordered is also wind -resistant, silver on the outside and black lined inside with good, proven UV protection.

I'm relieved that I might not have to use it yet but will be glad to have it

Lol, who gives a fuck about them?? They're waaaaay over there and we're waaaaay over here, where life is important. The English are far supieripr to everyone else, don't you know?? And anyway if it means Jane and Joe have to stop eating meat every single day, or have to walk to the shop instead of drive, then frankly, all the Africans and Asains can di cause we most certainly aren't going to inconvenience ourselves for some foreigners!!!!!

[The above views are not mine, just a representation of what the majority of British people think apparently.]

Ironically racist in that you mention the English as your one to mock. Also learn to differentiate that the British don't just include the English.

Ok. So basically you're saying it's ok and understandable to give up. That's pathetic. We should be collectively working together to make a difference, not throwing in the towel.

I haven't done the maths and won't bother to, but a two hour flight with many people can't be worse than all those same people going on a holiday by car, avoiding flying 'for the environment', surely?

I don't do short haul flights but I definitely rack up car mileage.
