Colleague reported me to RSPCA

Not sure what to do with this one…..
I work for a big company and have been taking my dog to work with me
this week as my usual dog
walker is away. We’re in north Scotland so It’s not hot, I leave all the car windows open 1/3 way and come out hourly to check on her, offer water and a wee and walk her in my lunch hour.
oddly (to me) yesterday a colleague from a different department I don’t know at all was standing by
my car when I came for one the checks-
she told me she was reporting me for leaving my dog in the car all day, that I was an idiot and that I should be ashamed. I was so shocked I didn’t say anything, and today Found a note on my windscreen at the end of the day from RSPCA to say they’d had a welfare call about a dog locked in the car, they’d come and found her calm with windows open and had a chat with her thru the open window (?!) and were satisfied she was well cared for and NFA.

do I just leave it at that? Or try and find the name of the women who reported me and complain on basis of her being so rude? It all just seems so odd.

@wobblymum1 what is the job you do?

londonrach · 14/07/2023 06:40

Very cruel

GoodChat · 14/07/2023 06:43

You're not taking your dog for a lunchtime walk if you're splitting your break across the working day.

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 14/07/2023 06:54

Why not just leave the dog at home?

ZforZebra · 14/07/2023 06:55

How did your workplace allow you to check on the dog every hour? Did you actually manage to get any work done? Anyway I think YABU, and the colleague who reported you did the right thing.

BlockedButWhy · 14/07/2023 07:03

I feel the dog would have been happier just left at home tbh.

Glad you find me
so funny.
taking sensible advice of keeping note intact in case anyone at work needs to see it, not scribbling over it for your amusement. And fyi I’m a
single
mum due to the abuse I experienced from my alcoholic ex husband so don’t find drinking comments funny. Hope you’re nicer in real life ☹️

Oh go away..single mum..so fing what

Your dog deserves more than you as an owner. Vile behaviour. I would have called police and RSPCA.

For fuck’s sake. This thread has gone mental.

Swansridinghorses · 14/07/2023 07:11

Honestly OP people are so dramatic about this kind of thing. I work with dog and myself and lots of my colleagues do this often. My dogs are high energy dogs and have lots of walking and sports training and know the car is a chill out spot. They do the same at dog shows. They come one day a week in the car and we do a walk before work, lunchtime and after work and they love their work days. Obviously only when it’s two hot or other precautions are taken. The day my partner works from home they sleep all day anyway because they know when their walks are. They are happy content and well exercised dogs. Dogs need to sleep at least 16 hours a day.

You’re staying very calm, OP. I don’t know what it is about Mumsnet and animals, but I’m about to return to the UK to work in an animal welfare role and hope this thread isn’t representative of the entire UK population as they appear to have lost any sense of proportion or common sense about animal welfare.

The SSPCA officer appears to have agreed. He or she probably get sick of non-events being reported as he or she will be dealing most days with animal cruelty and will know what that actually looks like.

Give your lovely dog a cuddle from me.

You are going to work in an animal welfare role and you see no issue with a dog left in a car for a day?? And you are critical of animal lovers who would be concerned about this, and who are quoting the RSPCA guidance?

please reconsider your career choose - you don’t seem suited to it.

Just to say I love this :)

Me too!! 🤣🤣🤣

Peony654 · 14/07/2023 07:16

I would have done the same as your colleague, that’s cruel. So boring for the dog. Don’t get a dog if you can’t look after it properly

NotAllPets · 14/07/2023 07:21

This thread is utterly batshit.

lulublue32 · 14/07/2023 07:23

I think we all know our own dogs and what they’ll be ok with. My first dog would have been more that happy in a cool car, so long as she has her bed, a few toys and a chew treat - she’d have been happy to chill and look out of the windows. If left at home, she’d have stayed pretty much in one area anyway. My current dog however, would be very stressed at being confined.
I work in a job where a loo break is often a challenge, so the ability to do hourly checks and an hours walk at lunch is mind blowing 😂!
if we don’t have dog care cover - we get up at 5:30am and walk him for 1+ hours. Then walk again as soon as we get home. We leave treats and enrichment games.
I wouldn’t say anything to your colleague, they were acting from a place of kindness for the dog.

LlynTegid · 14/07/2023 07:23

A colleague who cares about the welfare of dogs. A local branch of the RSPCA who respond promptly. How nice to read.

Killingmytime · 14/07/2023 07:24

wobblymum1 · 13/07/2023 22:17

I know, had a chat with made me
laugh too 😂
i don’t want
to blow it up at work as found her oddly aggressive from the start calling me an idiot and standing by my
car, and despite her
seeing me give her a drink and cuddles
and a walk went onto report me…but also don’t want to just ignore it 🤷‍♀️it’s just so odd.

I dont think shes the odd one 🙄
i would have called the rspca on a dog left in the car too.
them not doing anything doesn't say you were right, they regularly do nothing when people report.

NotAllPets · 14/07/2023 07:26

I just say I’m impressed about the quickness of the response from the SSPCA!

I’ve worked closely with the RSPCA in the past on many occasions and they are utterly useless. I wouldn’t listen to a word they say on anything, they’re a disgrace of an organisation, they have little understanding of animal behaviour and welfare and all their officers I encountered were lazy toads. Hopefully the SSPCA are very different.

FiddleLeaf · 14/07/2023 07:27

YABU but don’t want to hear it. The idea of leaving my very old and sleepy mutt in the car is totally bizarre to me so I don’t understand why you thought this was a reasonable solution. Find doggy day care or another walker.

ItsABrandNewDay · 14/07/2023 07:38

If your workplace is happy with you taking the extra breaks, could you instead leave the dog at home, take an extended lunch and go home to walk and check on her?

Amispringy · 14/07/2023 07:43

Oh dear OP

Poor dog must have been bored stupid. A bit like you, really

RSPCA/SSPCA my arse

CornishGem1975 · 14/07/2023 07:44

Disappointed the RSPCA deemed it acceptable to be fair.

kayserah · 14/07/2023 07:48

NameChange245 · 14/07/2023 07:13

Me too!! 🤣🤣🤣

what you love to see constant bullying ? Not a nice person

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 14/07/2023 07:49

Sorry, OP but bow it’a walk every hour too? Thought you said it’s hourly check and cuddles and walk at lunchtime. How can you walk your dog in the 5 mins slot. It can at best stretch its legs but that’d be preferential to do at will at home.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 14/07/2023 07:50

ItsABrandNewDay · 14/07/2023 07:38

If your workplace is happy with you taking the extra breaks, could you instead leave the dog at home, take an extended lunch and go home to walk and check on her?

That’s the best idea in the circumstances.

Poppercorn · 14/07/2023 07:53

I think the reason why you are getting people wound up OP is that you said you were confused why it was seen as cruel, and most of the people on here have pointed out why and how it is cruel. Yet, you don't seem to be open to any other perspective on this other than your own.

You came on here to validate what you are doing is not cruel, which you didn't get so maybe consider that what you are doing is not in the dog's best interests?
