Colleague reported me to RSPCA

Not sure what to do with this one…..
I work for a big company and have been taking my dog to work with me
this week as my usual dog
walker is away. We’re in north Scotland so It’s not hot, I leave all the car windows open 1/3 way and come out hourly to check on her, offer water and a wee and walk her in my lunch hour.
oddly (to me) yesterday a colleague from a different department I don’t know at all was standing by
my car when I came for one the checks-
she told me she was reporting me for leaving my dog in the car all day, that I was an idiot and that I should be ashamed. I was so shocked I didn’t say anything, and today Found a note on my windscreen at the end of the day from RSPCA to say they’d had a welfare call about a dog locked in the car, they’d come and found her calm with windows open and had a chat with her thru the open window (?!) and were satisfied she was well cared for and NFA.

do I just leave it at that? Or try and find the name of the women who reported me and complain on basis of her being so rude? It all just seems so odd.

I wouldn't mean to actually hurt your feelings..

it’s ok. Thank you though. It’s a genuine thread but can’t prove that until mumsnet verifies me.

Hope you're not feeling too ruff in the morning

PoseyFlump · 14/07/2023 00:33

Good idea. I think we should also complain about officer that did nothing.

There can surely only be a couple of branches that meet the OP's description. This can be easily verified if we actually think it's real?

lilacsinbloom · 14/07/2023 00:34

It is not "rude" to care about animal welfare.

Leave your dog at home and walk it before and after work; your behaviour is the only odd part.

TheShellBeach · 14/07/2023 00:34

So you're in the Shetland Islands?
Or the Orkneys.

Because she's partially sighted. But not half blind mind and can still drive her car to work to lock her dog in.

Oh ffs really?! Me and my big mouth

Is that above or below the SPCA and RSPCA logos which both appear on the note?

You could surely crop it, or cover his details with something?

I'm a bit surprised that both logos appear.

The SSPCA is a completely separate charity from the RSPCA and is usually very defensive and protective of its name and identity to make sure it isn't confused with, or assumed to be a subsidiary of, the RSPCA.

aww.. ok, if it's genuine (sorry, I'm still struggling to believe it is, but get that it's possible), then maybe best to step away. Hope u ok

PoseyFlump · 14/07/2023 00:45

I wouldn't worry too much @NameChange245 All that coincided with a request to see the note 😉

As it's likely the OP won't be back, can we please remind any new comers that leaving a dog in a car in July anywhere in the UK is a really terrible idea.

RoomOfRequirement · 14/07/2023 00:48

Ah so close OP. You slipped up lying about both the RSPCA AND SPCA being on the note.

Research more next time.

PoseyFlump · 14/07/2023 00:53

But the note says RSPCA/SSPCA.

Interesting. So we are certain this bit can't be true?

TalkingSchist · 14/07/2023 01:04

NatashaDancing · 14/07/2023 00:34

I'm a bit surprised that both logos appear.

The SSPCA is a completely separate charity from the RSPCA and is usually very defensive and protective of its name and identity to make sure it isn't confused with, or assumed to be a subsidiary of, the RSPCA.

Exactly. They had a fairly well publicised marketing drive to make the public aware that they were two different and unrelated companies, since many people accidentally donate to the RSPCA instead of the SSPCA.

Its almost like none of this actually happened!

Not only this, op also lives in the extreme north of Scotland, but somewhere built up enough to have a huge employer with many departments, staff members who don’t know each other, an HR dept, etc, and close enough to a rescue centre that the staff member would get to the dog whilst the person making the complaint was still standing at ops car, but definitely not Caithness (despite this being the only SSPCA location in the far north of Scotland)
Op also lives somewhere that it was 12 degrees at 12 today which isn’t near stornoway. Except the met office seem to think that perhaps there was nowhere meeting that description.

So either the SPCA and the met office are wrong, or op is lying.

PoseyFlump · 14/07/2023 01:07

And the case was solved! 👏 good night all 🥱

Mysleepisbroken · 14/07/2023 01:08

None of this makes sense.

For a start, if the windows were truly 1/3rd down, v such a small dog would be at risk of escaping through days open window..m

I get why it seems like it's better to take her in, so you can take her on more walks and pop out to see her, but it is really dangerous to leave your dog in a car for that long (yes, even an hour at a time).

According to a quick Google, the RSPCA site very clearly state dogs should not be left in a car for more than 5 minutes regardless of weather. Same on Battersea and Dogs Trust. It's not really about temperature outside per se (though that obviously is a factor) but because cars are conductors of heat. "Almost half of us (48%) believe it's okay to leave a dog in a car if we park in the shade or leave a window open. Unfortunately, this is a myth. In reality, opening the window a crack has no noticeable effect on the temperature inside a parked car." They also clearly state dogs can die within minutes in parked cars, even on cooler days. :(

Perhaps you could leave her at home if this happens again and a neighbour could pop in and take her out, if you're not able to get back over your lunch break? Or you could skip your lunch break and go home a bit earlier (say 2 pm) and do an extra hour's work at home since your work seem open to that.

You have posted on AIBU. The overwhelming response is not only were you being unreasonable but a total dick to boot. Read the room. You were clearly incredibly fortunate to have some fellow idiot from the SPCA visit the car. Anywhere else, even in the weather you describe would have their car broken into and the dog removed. I beg of you, report the abusive colleague for her actions. See how that works out for you. And as you clearly are an idiot I will tell you. Badly.
