Colleague reported me to RSPCA

Not sure what to do with this one…..
I work for a big company and have been taking my dog to work with me
this week as my usual dog
walker is away. We’re in north Scotland so It’s not hot, I leave all the car windows open 1/3 way and come out hourly to check on her, offer water and a wee and walk her in my lunch hour.
oddly (to me) yesterday a colleague from a different department I don’t know at all was standing by
my car when I came for one the checks-
she told me she was reporting me for leaving my dog in the car all day, that I was an idiot and that I should be ashamed. I was so shocked I didn’t say anything, and today Found a note on my windscreen at the end of the day from RSPCA to say they’d had a welfare call about a dog locked in the car, they’d come and found her calm with windows open and had a chat with her thru the open window (?!) and were satisfied she was well cared for and NFA.

do I just leave it at that? Or try and find the name of the women who reported me and complain on basis of her being so rude? It all just seems so odd.

I get nervous leaving mine to go pay for petrol, and keep eyes on in the queue. Dog theft OP, can never understand people leaving a family member tied up outside places either. And yes, even besides that, dog would be better at home.

PoseyFlump · 14/07/2023 00:19

@NameChange245 when you put it like that... 🤣🤣

WhichEllie · 14/07/2023 00:19

I do think YABU for not mentioning that it’s a Maltese in the OP. Those are considered hypoallergenic, so if your workplace is concerned about allergies I would think they could make an exception for this week provided that it stays under/around your desk and behaves itself. Plus it’s not exactly an athletic working dog, is it? It would have been perfectly fine left at home during the day with walks before/after you worked until the dog walker recovers.

I think if you leave your dog in the car for long periods you have to expect that this sort of thing might happen. In some countries it’s illegal because it’s viewed as dangerous.

That said I once left my dog in the car on a cold, rainy day to get some of her favorite chews. I was gone from 11:37 to 11:42, in and out of the shop, and left one window cracked. I returned to a poorly-written rant on my windscreen, courtesy of a local university student, about how terrible I was and how my dog would suffocate and die because there is no oxygen in cars when people are not in them. The absolute state of education these days. 😂

I have contacted the SSPCA to ask them to clarify their advice on dogs left i cars.

it seems odd that an animal welfare officer would condone and almost encourage this behaviour. But it does need clarified.

Thanks Jenny. I am going to do the same tomorrow. No way this is ok and I will want answers from them and will escalate if needed.

No idea how to do this, the local office contact details
are
at
the start and his details
at
The end?

Step 1: pick up a pen
Step 2: scribble out the identifying details
Step 3: pour another G&T

Oh OP I've gone from annoyed to laughing so much my stomach hurts!! 🤣🤣🤣

PoseyFlump · 14/07/2023 00:21

Get two bits of paper... fucking hilarious 😂

Don't worry spir1t, there is no way this thread is for real!! The OP reckons her failing eyesight is causing her to write in haiku, that her dog has chats through the car windscreen, and that her office car park is a doggy daycare of dogs in cars! I think OP has had a few too many g & t's and decided to start a bonkers thread for no reason :)

i joined mumsnet as I’m a single mum and pretty lonely. I found a lot
of support
here. to be made
fun of for
my eyesight and mental health suggesting I’m drunk is beyond hurtful.

Well, given that you are “as far north in Scotland that you can possibly get” then it’s pretty clear that you are in caithness, given that their rescue centre in caithness is the most northerly one they have?

Except you have told me you aren’t in caithness. Therefore you can’t be “as far north as you can possibly get” can you?

taking sensible advice of keeping note intact in case anyone at work needs to see it, not scribbling over it for your amusement. And fyi I’m a
single
mum due to the abuse I experienced from my alcoholic ex husband so don’t find drinking comments funny. Hope you’re nicer in real life ☹️

I’m not telling you my address!
but nope, not Caithness. There is more to top of Scotland than….googling Caithness😂

Put a piece of paper over his name.

PoseyFlump · 14/07/2023 00:25

We feel sorry for your dog. Don't deface the note. Just place paper over the sensitive bits.

Note or it didn't happen.

TheBlinkOfAnEye · 14/07/2023 00:25

FlemishHorse · 13/07/2023 23:45

If they are left with good ventilation, in the shade, checked regularly, it’s no different to being left at home in a crate.

I wouldn't do that all day either. Every now and then, sure, but not full time working hours.

Scabber · 14/07/2023 00:26

Sorry you're having a hard time OP but generally we love our pets and no-one is ever going to win an argument that it's OK to leave a dog in a car.

I think your colleagues reaction was understandable and deep down you must agree. Calling someone an idiot sounds like a reaction to justifying leaving dog in a car. It's not aggressive, it really isn't.

Hopefully your wee dug is happy, safe and feeling loved. Maybe this is the time to research some back up dog care for when this next happens .

Yes, but you are close enough to a SPCA that a staff member can get to your workplace whilst your colleague is still standing beside your car.

ColourfulHairbands · 14/07/2023 00:25

Because she's partially sighted. But not half blind mind and can still drive her car to work to lock her dog in.

Awww.. ok, sorry OP. I thought you were having a laugh along with me! You on the G&Tbwith your talking dog, and me on the wine with me less than chatty pup! ... but on the v small off-chance you are not having a laugh and this thread is actually serious (gosh I hope not!!) then sorry. I wouldn't mean to actually hurt your feelings..

Blondewithredlips · 14/07/2023 00:31

specialsauce · 14/07/2023 00:17

This is a good idea. We should all contact both the SSPCA and the RSPCA for clarification on keeping dogs in cars all day in work carparks.

I think they would be pleased to have public engagement and support on reviewing and updating their policy on this.

We can't have people thinking this is acceptable. Next time the officer will hopefully 'take further action'.

Good idea. I think we should also complain about officer that did nothing.

PoseyFlump · 14/07/2023 00:32

I think the OP's gone off to google how to mock-up the note.

NameChange245 · 14/07/2023 00:32
