To be shocked it’s Huw?

His wiki page says he’s a Christian and a weekly church goer. Not a great ambassador for them, ah well

Wait a minute. Huw Edwards has been confirmed as the person accused. He hasn't been confirmed as actually having done anything!

He did have severe mental health issues prior. It was well documented as he was very open about it.

Or he planned his excuse years in advance.

JeandeServiette · Today 18:39
I'm shocked that his wife was the one who named him.

Coward. (Poor wife.)

Maybe he felt pushed into being closeted and this fuelled his depression? Having to "play" at being the hetro family man?

Think that may have played a role.

Clearly he's been having issues with his sexuality hence the wreckless behaviour.

Cheating on his partner (as has happened in many of the relationships that ended in divorce..half the country) isn't defendable, but I hope he can get through this and be back presenting on the Beeb.

This non story should never have been in the news, but slime like that rag will dig through the bins for anything.

JustRingJoeDuffy · 12/07/2023 20:55

I dont think its unreasonable to be shocked - he's a senior BBC newsreader. I find the poll results surprising to be honest. Not sure if thats because posters expect this from newsreaders or because they felt they "knew" this due to the social media witch-hunt. Or both 😕

I do find it strange that there is such a huge contrast between the public reaction to both him and Philip Schofield as opposed to Ant McPartlin. Their behaviour is certainly VERY distasteful - but not illegal according to the police. Meanwhile Ant McPartlin - who did actually break the law by driving at over twice the limit and crashing into two cars - won the best presenter Award at the National TV awards that same year. An award voted on by the public.

poetryandwine · 12/07/2023 20:55

You are so right, @Frankola

However from his wife’s statement, which I thought well calibrated, this sounds complicated.

Having said that, Huw had been open and humble about his severe MH struggles for many years.

Given that two police forces have now concluded there is no legal case to answer, I wish him, his family and all the young people involved - some of whom by all accounts feel hard done by, perhaps with good justification though that is not for MN to decide - peace.

Just wondering about the religious aspect and considering that Edwards (born 1962?) would have been a practising Christian at a time when the church was preaching that homosexuality was a sin, a flaw, and that they were acts of wickedness. Wonder if he married against his true sexual orientation in the hope that he would be somehow 'strengthened' against acting upon it. Many people brought up in faith used to do this. Sad if that was in fact the case.

This is what I thought. So sad all the way round really. I think his wife probably knew.

SpringViolet · 12/07/2023 20:57

Didn’t the mother of the young person who was allegedly paid for dirty pics say they were using the money to fuel a drug habit?

I wonder how HE would have felt if it had been his DS or DD who may well be much older that the young person. Boak!

Sounds like his ‘depression’ stems from choosing to live a double life and parading as someone he’s not while using teens/young adults for sexual thrills while in a position of power and influence, (lots of money). Grooming basically.

I bet he never considered the effect of this on his wife’s and children’s mental health.

Despicable man.

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 12/07/2023 20:59

Hey @spring violet.....you read all that in THE SUN??

So of course it all MUST be true? W

Why do you read THE SUN? Can you not better yourself?

londonrach · 12/07/2023 20:23

Yes. I just hope he getting the support he needs and it's been trial by media and not impressed by his nasty wife.

How is his wife nasty? Missed that bit, she sounded very empathetic. Bloody nightmare for her and their five kids who I presume are adults. Or certainly hope so. I know he’s very ill - but coercive behaviour isn’t a symptom of chronic depression. Glad no crime has been committed although police have a track record of not taking abuse of young gay men very seriously

lljkk · 12/07/2023 21:05

VF did no wrong imho.
It is good to put end to speculation. HE & family won't move on until that happens.
I'm impressed by all the MNers who didn't already know.

GoodChat · 12/07/2023 18:07

I don't know that being a Christian means anything. Religious people can be the worst sometimes.

I'm not a Christian myself, but I'm pretty sure that Christians are just like the rest of us with all the usual (and unusual) human foibles. In fact, I think one of the reasons Christianity exists is in recognition of that very fact.

So please tell us all what he has supposed to have done and your sources.

Police say no crime has been committed.

Met police say 'no criminal offence' committed by BBC presenter Huw Edwards

Detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command have now concluded their assessment and have determined there is no information to indicate that a criminal offence has been committed.

Friggin hell your shocked that a Christian isn't squeaky clean 🤔
How many priests have been found guilty for messing with kids 🤷‍♀️🤔

Anonymouseposter · 12/07/2023 21:10

Two things can be true. 1. Even if he hasn’t done anything illegal he seems to have helped a young person fund a drug habit by paying for sleazy pictures. I would be furious if it were my child. 2. The Sun is a rag, the aim is to discredit the BBC, overshadow other news and start a witch hunt. I don’t doubt Huw Edwards has a severe mental health crisis, I don’t think it excuses his behaviour but his employers, health providers, police etc can deal with it.

itsmylife7 · 12/07/2023 21:11

Are people assuming the young person is male, for some reason I think female... don't know why.

If only the BBC had taken the parents complaint seriously and told the pervy guy to stop.

His poor wife and kids.

How would he know the person involved was a crack addict?

Frankola · 12/07/2023 21:13

@poetryandwine 100%

The police have concluded no crime has been committed. Whatever has happened (I agree it sounds very messy) is now for HE, his family and the young people associated with all of this to work through and heal.

The use of the word seems would indicate it is untrue and speculative, unless of course you have a source you could quote?

tunbridgeoutrage · 12/07/2023 21:17

I hope HE keeps his job.

I have had enough of these SM-driven witch-hunts, although in this case The Sun newspaper was to blame. I don't even like George Osborne, but I am opposed to the email that was sent to his wedding guests and widely disseminated via Twitter et al. .

The Sun has proven Harry Windsor is telling the truth about them.

Fandangoes · 12/07/2023 21:20

I feel the most sorry for the parents of the youngster involved. I can only imagine the living hell they must have been going through. To watch their child throw their life away on drugs, to be wondering where on earth they were getting the money from, to have felt so helpless. Then to discover it’s this been this man, ole enough to be his father, using his wealth and power to take advantage of their child. To feel their frustration and despair when the police and then the bbc would do nothing to help them turn off this source of income, to protect their child. To feel like they had to resort to going to the press in desperation. And you know what - maybe it has worked! Maybe at least for the short term the money has dried up. Wether it is ‘legal’ or not, no one will convince me that a 60+ man taking advantage of somebody young enough to be his grandchild in a sexual way is anything other than deviant!

"He was named by his wife Vicky Flind in a statement issued on his behalf."

NB: on his behalf.

I'm glad you've posted that Soup, I've seen several posters on here suggesting the wife is evil or something for "naming him" when her statement very clearly is very clear that she is speaking on his behalf/request.

Homosexuality is still a sin according to the Bible. The Bible hasn’t changed.

Livelovebehappy · 12/07/2023 20:23

But why would this depression push him to exchange sleazy messaging with young people? You can’t blame mental health issues for behaving inappropriately. You still have a moral compass.

I’m not making excuses for him, I was just answering the poster who seemed to think he’d suddenly made MH issues up
