I don't think Christianity requires you to be free from sin. The whole point is that you get absolution for your inevitable sinning from Jesus and you don't live in a glass house.

Yes his situation is sad but depression doesn't give licence to behave anyway you want without repercussions.

The major religions all tend to be very strict on the subject of sexuality. So I suppose it's not surprising that someone deeply religious would automatically (rather than brassing their case) feel extreme shame.
