I'm actually shocked.

H's already resigned - presumably back at the point when his Twitter profile was changed to remove mention of the BBC.

Corrected: this has now been retracted.

So. Can we talk about Johnson's WhatsApp messages and George Osborne's email now?

The most shocking thing I’ve seen come from this in the last hour alone is how people are so quick to say a teenager knew exactly what they were doing. That it cant possibly be the fault of a grown man paying for sexual moments from someone not yet fully matured, a grown man who is married, a grown man who has spent decades reporting and seeing exactly what the consequences were for other who’ve done the same as him. And still he chose to do it anyway. The ferocity recently in so many ways that people are deciding that kids now know their own mind when it comes to things they have little idea of the longterm consequences are, and when it invariably blows up into disaster the same kids get blamed for supposedly having to ‘know better’.

A whole generation is going to face a very rotten future, they went online with little supervision, are sold a lie that giving away sex and their bodies is a wonderful, freeing thing. Then when reality comes knocking the effects it will have on their mental health knowing they’ve been used and abused for the gratification of men, for money that never lasts, it’s going to be horrific.

The only one to look at here is the last way man who thinks he can use his wealth to pay off another young person for their own gratification. It’s systemic and it needs to be stopped.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 12/07/2023 18:53

Maybe the mum needs to stop blaming others and look at why her teenage son was dealing drugs and funding it through only fans.

This is brutal. Sure here, of all places, we should extend some sympathy to the mother, who is clearly struggling in terms of her relationship with her son. As for people saying she took payment, it has been widely reported that she didn't.

I think if a famous, powerful, wealthy man was paying my teenage son thousands of pounds for sexual pictures, I would blame him too.

Oh fuck right off.

RaisinFlapjack · 12/07/2023 18:54

Honestly all this talk about "playing the mental health card" is disgusting. You don't have to condone his behaviour to to appreciate that suddenly being exposed to this level of public scrutiny and vitriol will take a terrible toll on your mental health. Especially for someone who already has well documented struggles. I think everyone remembers what happened to Caroline Flack.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 12/07/2023 18:54

HIs name has been out there for ages. Surprised people didn't know it was him

GlomOfNit · 12/07/2023 18:54

Amuseaboosh · 12/07/2023 18:08

And now the 'mental health issues' is being trotted out.

I think that's a pretty low thing to say, TBH. We none of us know what goes on in anyone else's life and nobody apart from HE and his closest family have any right to pronounce on his MH issues. I think if you've not been there ...

HE has spoken candidly about his mental health and depression before, and now he's in hospital with them. That's hardly 'trotting out the MH card', is it?

JenniferBooth · 12/07/2023 18:55

@Gerrataere yes its interesting isnt it I just found an old Caroline Flack thread where "17 is barely a man"

PollyThePixie · 12/07/2023 18:55

Amuseaboosh · 12/07/2023 18:08

And now the 'mental health issues' is being trotted out.

He’s had a long standing history of depression/mental health issues.

SofaFromRomania · 12/07/2023 18:55

He didn't break any laws. The police say he has done nothing wrong. His wife and family are supporting him. He did his job really well. It isn't our business.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 12/07/2023 18:33

Ah but this is what the "Great" British Public care about you see.

By in large, they don't give a fuck about actual criminality, abuse, bullying and corruption from their elected officials. Oh no, the morality of a news presenter is far far more important.

No wonder the country is fucked.

Quite. The country is being pillaged and asset stripped by the 1% and their willing accomplices and instead the media, which they control of course, is full of this total distraction which very conveniently allows them to also manipulate opinion against the one nominally independent and unbiased source of news .

‘He told me the queen had died’ - give me strength.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 12/07/2023 18:56

The media are now talking about that in a sympathetic tone, rather than talking about Edwards’ behaviour and his victim(s).

White men are almost never the villain in the media.

Countdown2023 · 12/07/2023 18:56

He will be fine. He has had a significant pay rise this year

Soontobe60 · 12/07/2023 18:57

Soooomaninamechanges · 12/07/2023 18:24

Inpatient care more than likely means a section 2, which means he has probably tried to kill himself.

He's made a phenomenal fuck up, but I wouldn't wish that on anyone

It can also mean he’s voluntarily checked himself into a private clinic,

That's defamatory.

Police are not investigating as no criminal activity.

DiolchamFawr · 12/07/2023 18:57

Gerrataere

Quite.

Amuseaboosh · 12/07/2023 18:08

He’s long documented his struggles with depression. Cheap shot.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2023 18:58

Winchester100 · 12/07/2023 18:10

I dint think they are playing any card. He’s actually in hospital. Have some bloody compassion.

Like he did for the 17 year old crack addict or any of the others?

VisionsOfSplendour · 12/07/2023 18:58

Countdown2023 · 12/07/2023 18:56

Yes because money is a well known cure for depression and other mental health problems. What a stupid post

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 12/07/2023 18:58

Hes just another rich, entitled man who was arrogant enough to think he would get away with it. Let's be honest, he will.

Youdoyoutoday · 12/07/2023 18:58

Reddog1 · 12/07/2023 18:15

Awful all round. I thought he was one of the decent ones, such a talented broadcaster with that lovely voice and so much gravitas, but he’s an old sleaze to and it’s bloody disappointing.

I hope that his wife and kids have good people around them. I wish them strength.

Completely agree

rwalker · 12/07/2023 18:58

ArcticSkewer · 12/07/2023 18:09

Having just read his wife's statement and the police report of no criminal activity, it's pretty disgusting that he has ended up in hospital in patient treatment just to stop us all talking about George Osborne during his wedding weekend.

He’s probably on the verge of topping himself
being outed and ruined and police yet to find anything illegal

bb192 · 12/07/2023 18:59

Does no one find it dodgy?
The police have found no criminal charges.

The parents went to the sun of all newspapers.

The parents have said if Huw Edwards hadn't allegedly paid their child money she would not have a drugs problem (surely they would be supporting there child through rehab or social services it's not down to if an individual gives money then that's it they are the drug feeder).

The young person themselves never reported it and has informed through her lawyer that it's not true.

I want to remain objective I do but it all just seems very dodgy, if it's actually factual.

In addition I think stating "playing the mental health card again" is brutal. He previously suffered with mental health issues which as his wife said are well documented.
He is in hospital so meets the threshold for hospitalisation so possibly even sectioned.
He has a family and children so wouldn't want him killing himself.

I am not saying these young people are not vulnerable but I just feel the story all seems really weird.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2023 19:00

Thesenderofthiscard · 12/07/2023 18:12

Oh, feck off with the MH issues… he’s an abuser, he could have gone to any adult site and seen what he wanted but there’s no power trip for him doing that. Is there??

Yes. I reserve my sympathy for the teenagers involved. Not the 61 year-old highly paid married celebrity.
