I think it's fair to say that HE had a very clean image - a stable, reliable man, a safe pair of hands to deliver even the worst news. An anchor, lead presenter on multiple shows. Devout Christian. Married. Five children. Smart. Keen interest in history. The Welsh warmth. He is an intelligent and hardworking man and he's projected this persona on screen, this is how he built up his impressive career.
I'm not taking away any of his achievements. I have always liked him as a presenter and respected him. Everyone is human and makes mistakes. I think, however, even if Met Police hasn't found sufficient evidence to proceed with the investigation, the multiple allegations and the reaction to it are genuinely concerning, it's more than a genuine mistake or an error of judgement. Even if not criminal, it's inexcusable. And this shouldn't be happening. I don't wish anything bad on him or anyone, but he should not be admired and generously rewarded either.
