Your pictures won’t have that blurred misty haze if you wipe the camera lens on your phone before taking them.

Your gold jewellery will sparkle like mad if you leave it to soak in warm soapy water and scrub gently with an old toothbrush, rings do the inside underneath the settings to allow light to penetrate better.

Drinking a pint of water first thing in the morning will rehydrate your body and help get rid of that groggy feeling. Drink as much as you can throughout the day - you’ll thank me for it.

Closing the apps on your phone will make it work more efficiently, same for clearing the browser history.

AIBU to ask what your tips of the day are?

Great thread!

Get an old fashioned carpet sweeper for when you can't be arsed getting the hoover out.

I don't get this one. I expect I'd keep the carpet sweeper (if I had one) in the same place as the hoover. Why eould it be any less effort to get it out?

If you have to plug the vac in, it is less effort to simply pick up the carpet sweeper than mess about unrolling the lead and plugging in, then putting it all back afterwards.
I go for the carpet sweeper every time, and someone else vacs the carpets as I can't lift the Dyson up/down stairs. Still have a 'proper' one, not a rechargable.

Kitchen scissors for cutting chicken I hate the feel of chicken. I also now own 3 pairs of kitchen scissors and use them a lot for many different things.

Wash your towels with no detergent and you will see how much build up there is.

Vinegar for towels doesn't work if you have very hard water. Ours is about as hard as you can get and no matter what I do the towels stand up unaided.

Vinegar does help with foul smells from perfumed detergent if you buy 'preloved' but it takes many soaks and washes and it never quite goes. Please think of the toxins if you use heavily scented stuff, it is really unhealthy crud.

Maireas · 10/07/2023 11:13

I live in a very soft water area, so the vinegar technique works for me. I agree about not using detergent. In fact, for every wash in which I use detergent, I use about 1/10 of the manufacturer's recommended amounts. Unless you have heavy soiling, you don't need much.

Probably not a popular option because of the cost, but we installed a water softener a few years ago and the difference it's made in terms of shower cleaning, laundry, etc is amazing. Worth every penny.
(Apologies for veering OT.)

Don't drink caffeine until 90 mins after you've woken up, gives your cortisol levels time to decrease and helps to lower stress levels.

Also yes to the water as soon as you wake up

If your dog rolls in fox poo use tomato ketchup as a shampoo - takes the stain and the smell away.
Other rolling in poo is available such as cow, sheep, goose, horse - dog not fussy, doesn't mind rolling in dead things either - tomato ketchup shampoo works well on this too.

Powdered sugar soap is very cheap and excellent for cleaning ovens. Make a bit of solution, then line the oven bottom with kitchen roll and soak it with the soap solution, then leave for an hour - more, if you feel rebellious!

Have a bowl ready for the gunky kitchen roll debris, rub it around the oven surface and dispose. You will probably need to use some more kitchen roll, damp with water, to get rid of the residue.

Having moved from a very hard water area to a very soft water one - the difference is significant. It's far better in terms of cooking, washing, showering, everything - so I would say it's a good investment!

Sounds like a great tip - is it a messy process?

Not very, but the greasy gunk isn't very nice. You don't want it dripping on the floor.

Water softeners are supposed to really help if you have exma......

Swing your arms back and forwards (up to shoulder height) for 10 minutes a session, three times a day. This brings down your blood pressure. Got this tip from my Tai Chi teacher. It really works.

TopMog · 10/07/2023 19:39

Get yourself a BRITA water filter jug. The taste difference is remarkable. I lived in Mafikeng (South Africa), Milan and Siracusa (Sicily) where the water tastes vile. The Brita worked its magic.

Add slices of orange or lemon or pineapple or mango or lemon verbena or lemon balm leaves.

We buy loaves of bread a month and freeze them, when we need them, they get put in the fridge and last up to nearly 2 weeks and no more mouldy bread. After 2 weeks the edges go a bit stale. Saved us lots of money and no waste. Can do this with every kind of bread. Takes 10 minutes to get to room temperature. Game changer.

MachineBee · 10/07/2023 19:53

To remove tea stains in mugs, put the lemon slices from you G&T in the bottom of the mug, pour hot water on them up to the stain and leave overnight. Usually pretty clean in the morning.

MachineBee · 10/07/2023 19:58

Before squeezing juice out of lemons or limes, grate off the zest and freeze. Always available for adding to cakes when you need to peek them up a bit.

Don't bother saying goodbyes when you want to leave a social event with alcohol involved. Nobody will notice and your goodbyes will take a further hour. Just grab your jacket and leave.

Absolutely, that's my magical disappearing party trick

Possibly a bit niche but if you take medication that makes you itchy as a side effect (painkillers), over the counter allergy/hay-fever relief tablets can counteract it.

Um, if your medication is making you itchy see your GP. You may be allergic, and if it gets worse (which is possible) your airway could swell up.

That's disappointing! I used to buy it from Ocado, and when they no longer stocked it I emailed the manufacturers to ask who their other stockists were - only Sainsburys was their response (a couple of months ago). Such a good product, and better than the alternative gels that are available.

You can get it from Amazon.
