Your pictures won’t have that blurred misty haze if you wipe the camera lens on your phone before taking them.

Your gold jewellery will sparkle like mad if you leave it to soak in warm soapy water and scrub gently with an old toothbrush, rings do the inside underneath the settings to allow light to penetrate better.

Drinking a pint of water first thing in the morning will rehydrate your body and help get rid of that groggy feeling. Drink as much as you can throughout the day - you’ll thank me for it.

Closing the apps on your phone will make it work more efficiently, same for clearing the browser history.

AIBU to ask what your tips of the day are?

Yes, I've used the vinegar and soft cloth method for years. Just can't work out the newspaper part.

It's an old method, builders used to use it. I saw it done once and it was good, but I don't see the point when you can just use a cloth.

If you have left over lemons, cut them in quarters and freeze each individually before bagging up. Drop one piece into your Gin and Tonic and voila! Delicious, undiluted, cold, lemony G and T.

For the oven … use bicarb and a little water to make a paste then rub on and leave for hours (all day). No vinegar needed, the dirt will just rub off. Put the shelves in the dishwasher then the dirt will just wipe off.

For young children … layer the bed with waterproof then normal sheet, waterproof then normal sheet. When they wet the bed/ are sick, you can take off the top layers in the middle of the night and the clean ones are ready underneath - no need to fumble around in the dark looking for clean bedding.

For limescale … use a 2p coin to scratch off limescale from taps. I have chrome taps and this works well with no damage but I think you have to be careful with gold coloured taps.

My Grandpa, who was a ship’s cook in the Navy during WW2, taught me this trick to clean a pan that’s got cremated food burned to the bottom: pour a layer of table salt onto to burned bottom of the pan, then add about 2 inches of cold water in. Bring to the boil and leave simmering for at least 1/2 an hour. The longer the better. Leave to cool completely, pour away the salty water and then the burnt layer of food just peels out. (Particularly good for burned rice).

Battery leaks can be remedied with lemon juice

If you have any childs toys or other electrical items where the battery has leaked, get some cotton buds and some lemon juice (or vinegar but I found lemon juice works better), saturate the cotton bud with lemon juice and rub the contact terminals to remove the leak stuff.

for a a bad leak this may take several goes and perseverance. you need to take it slowly and be gental.

if it's very bad and you can pick off big chunks do that before you start.

once you've got it all off the metal contact points and out of the crevices etc. leave it to dry for 24hours - stick in some new batteries and you are good to go.

I wish I'd known this earlier in life as have thrown things away in that state thinking they were totally f*cked. But NO- lemon juice is the answer.

I spilt some red oil based dip down a white dress on Friday, I got home and put some washing up liquid on it and used a nail brush on the reverse then washed it as normal! I'm chuffed to say I saved the dress!! I'm so impressed with this!

I have saved a few oily clothes recently with washing up liquid and WD40. Just dampen the oily patch then rub them both in and chuck in the wash. Comes out perfectly.

Hate this on Facebook too

@Clementineorsatsuma yes I've tried everything, I can sometimes do squash but it has to be very strong which defeats the object. I really wish I could be a water drinker but it just tastes like wet fresh air to me 🤮

To get rid of those yellow curry stains on clothing hang the item on the washing line in direct sunshine until the stain disappears. I was sceptical about this until I tried it on white linen trousers; worked a treat.

My only ever parenting tip! If your kids are playing with sticker books, peel off the negative space then they can lift all the stickers themselves.

Wear gloves when handling leaked batteries, battery acid is corrosive.

A scoop of vanish oxi action (or any brand version thereof actually) down the toilet gets rid of limescale marks. Just don’t mix with bleach at the same time!!!! Trust me 😂

Got an iPhone? Put your cards in your wallet to use Apple Pay

Always check your Boots Advantage card app for offers and load them before you go in

Use under bed storage boxes for carrying clothes when you go camping- it stops them getting damp plus it’s easy to get them in and out of. They slide under your camp beds too.

Aldi baby wipes work wonders for cleaning trainers/ pumps

Why is using a phone any quicker than using a card?

Why is using a phone any quicker than using a card?

Technically it’s probably a similar amount of time. The main benefits for me using Apple Pay aren’t the speed but the conveniences…

  1. you don’t have to touch the germ covered keypad to enter your pin
  2. it’s a great back up if you forget your purse / cardholder etc
  3. unlike contactless there is no limit because you have the security benefits of Face ID Touch ID or passcode to ensure security.
  4. your card details are not stored on your phone so it’s more secure
  5. you can have it across all your devices so it’s linked to iPad and Apple Watch too

Ok, good recommendation, @Brrrrrrrrrrrr - it's just that I've been behind a couple of people it hasn't worked for, so that put me off! Mind you, glitches can happen with cards.

Put a bottle of cheap Aldi or Lidl vodka under the kitchen sink for when you need grease free mirrors, need to get the WD40 off a shiny surface when you had to get the sticky labels off and to help get oil stains out of clothes before putting them in the washing machine

Don't put any alcohol treated clothes in the dryer - put them in the washing machine.

Don't waste alcohol on mirrors, use white vinegar. It cleans most things.

MonumentalLentil · 10/07/2023 09:55

Also, you can buy Isopropynol alcohol which is used for cleaning phones and electrical items, also in hand sanitiser. Pure alcohol.

I mix 99% with some water for a hand spray, and use it neat to clean radios, laptops, phones etc.

The best one on these threads is always the one about storing duvet sets in one of the pillowcases so you’re never fannying around looking for a missing bit of the set in a drawer.

Also buy fewer items of Tupperware and store them in a cupboard with the lids ON. You’ll obviously have far fewer Tupperware containers due to space but they’ll be twice as useful as when you had 50,000 with no matching lids.Grin

But why faff about putting it in the pillowcase when you can just fold the cover & sheet lengthways, place it all together and roll it up? Just unroll it when you need it, no need to be rooting about in a pillowcase.

Store same sized containers inside each other, lids on the bottom in a pile, rubber band round the lot, keeps them tidy.
