To think 100mph isn't routine

CaptainWarbeck · 08/07/2023 10:51

I'm travelling with my younger sister & her bf. They're driving up the country and are routinely doing 100mph on the motorways etc which feels overly fast to me. Context: I'm from an overseas country where speed cameras and checks are routine and most people just stick to the speed limit.

Is this the norm in the UK? If not, would you breach the peace and say anything? It doesn't help that they're continually play fighting while driving too which doesn't add to the feeling of safety...

I sure someone will tell I should banned blah blah blah

Pretty good case in point. The best driver I know is kind, forgiving, self-aware, respectful, open to engagement. The bad drivers I know see good driving as having a fast car and utilising that choice as some kind of strange, arbitrary proof of skill.

RespectMacaroni · 08/07/2023 12:26

It's far from normal. I hope they are caught and banned, for everyone’s sakes.

Fully agree with your entire post.

But what I have learned from the very skilled "😂" drivers on this thread is, all bad drivers care about is the limit and that 105mph is safe for country roads because some one did not crash or kill a cyclist on a short road.

Brefugee · 08/07/2023 12:29

I often drive that fast because it's allowed here on many Autobahn. Conditions allowing.

But I keep to speed limits (and reduce where conditions make that necessary) at all times and don't drive like a knob

I wouldnt call a 18yr old diesel mondeo fast. But suppose that's relative.

But there wasnt any cyclists if there was I would of slowed down

Oh dear 🙄, you seem oblivious to recognise by the time you had seen them you would have run over them. Seriously why am I replying too you? clueless.

Popworld · 08/07/2023 11:40

Is it madness though?

How you drive is more important than how fast you drive

If you drive at 100mph you are a bad driver no ifs no buts and let's face it if you ignore one rule you probably ignore more.

The part I was going that fast on was a straight road with clear visibility.

Anyway I broke 0 laws so not really sure what the fuss is about

I wasnt ignoring any laws

I do love it when people think they can beat physics. Driving fast safely indeed. As a PP said, just wait for that deer and see how it goes for you.

Crashes at the speed limit are devastating enough, add 30 mph on and it becomes a guaranteed lethal weapon. It certainly is not the norm. 100mph is about 40% over the speed limit!

I wouldn't get in the car with them. This is entirely your decision.

Driving at excessive speeds is simply showing off. They aren't a police or ambulance driver are they? No, just a dickhead.

Sierra26 · 08/07/2023 12:49

“Guys, isn’t the speed limit here 70mph? Not sure how strict it is but I’m a bit uncomfortable at this speed, can we slow down a bit?”

and if they don’t, get more direct

Jongleterre · 08/07/2023 12:49

"Slow the fuck down you clown!" Should suffice.

If they ignore this ask to be dropped off whilst still alive.

^ well context, here it's illegal but it isn't in Germany

The OP mentions country roads 100mph isn't legal on country roads in Germany.

GCWorkNightmare · 08/07/2023 11:15

plenty around here think it’s fine to join a motorway at about 45 with trucks doing 56-59 then having to move into the middle lane to overtake them.

They do.
It's bizarre, to enter the carriageway at such a ridiculously low speed.
Usually, I'll set the cruise at 75-85 traffic dependent.

Fizbosshoes · 08/07/2023 12:55

If police (or other emergency vehicles) are travelling at that speed, they will have had training for it and also they will likely have lights and sirens to alert other drivers. If an "anonymous" person is travelling at that speed there won't be the same advance warning for other drivers

Alargeoneplease89 · 08/07/2023 13:00

Not were I am, lots of smart motorways. I hope the idiots get pulled over 100mph is unnecessary.

Superpinkflowerpower · 08/07/2023 13:01

This is interesting, this study found that those who saw speeding as an important part of their self-concept, or roles they identify with within society.

Well if they want to be identified in society as twatty shit drivers and complete moron`s by a majority of the public when they go whizzing by yes I get it.

In Minnesota rapists can claim legally claim unrestricted parental rights. Just because other countries have different laws does not mean their right.

Popworld · 08/07/2023 13:15

Nice MN comparison .

Comparing driving legally to a rapist being able to claim parental rights, for driving legally. Wow

ActDottie · 08/07/2023 13:25

I’ve never been 100mph as either a passenger or driver!! 100mph I think is automatic ban as well. So no I don’t know think (and hope it isn’t) the norm.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/07/2023 13:26

No it’s not. I’d refuse to travel with them.
