To think 100mph isn't routine

I'm travelling with my younger sister & her bf. They're driving up the country and are routinely doing 100mph on the motorways etc which feels overly fast to me. Context: I'm from an overseas country where speed cameras and checks are routine and most people just stick to the speed limit.

Is this the norm in the UK? If not, would you breach the peace and say anything? It doesn't help that they're continually play fighting while driving too which doesn't add to the feeling of safety...

Far from normal. On a long motorway journey I think I would typically see only see one or two idiots driving like this.

Balloonhearts · 08/07/2023 13:58

I would do 80 - 90 if I'm totally honest without thinking much of it. I have driven 100mph a couple of times in my life on a very quiet stretch of motorway that I know well but certainly not routinely.

ThirteenTog · 08/07/2023 14:56

I wouldn’t trust anyone who is so sure that they can always drive safely at 100mph. I have more faith in those who retain humility and an understanding that they cannot 100% control everything in the environment around them, or indeed themselves.

Bluevelvetsofa · 08/07/2023 15:39

If the national speed limit is 70 mph, why is it OK to regularly drive on a motorway at between 75-85 mph. Is that the norm these days?

Inkypot · 08/07/2023 15:40

@Popworld since you seem to be lacking awareness of what law you may have broken- please share with us all what you know that national speed limit to be? And whether the country road you proudly raced along at 105mph was single or dual carriageway.
While I admire your boldness to hurl yourself at such speeds in an 18 yr old Mondeo, I can guarantee when you come off the road- which you definitely will if you keep driving as you are with the cocky attitude you're showing us all- we will be reading about your misadventure as a fatality.
Can only hope you either only take yourself out and not a family, animal, etc.
Your selfishness is staggering.

Not sure how its selfish to drive legally.

Inkypot · 08/07/2023 15:43

Ah, so in that case could you show us where in the UK these country roads are with no limits? Cos I've been driving 30 years and not seen any country roads like that?

Where did I say it was the uk?

Inkypot · 08/07/2023 15:44

Maybe a Google Earth link? I'm sure we're all invested in this now.
Thank goodness you're here with your wealth of driving knowledge to educate us all!

Inkypot · 08/07/2023 15:44

If it's not in the UK then it's not really relevant to the point the original poster was making but you crack on chicken.

IknowYouButIdontLikeYou · 08/07/2023 15:45

Your sister and her bloke are idiots. Say something. They are putting other people at risk.

YukoandHiro · 08/07/2023 15:46

tttigress · 08/07/2023 11:11

I guess driving up to 90 is normal-ish. But to be honest I have actually noticed people in the UK have slowed down in recent years. Most people don't really go over 80 these days.

I think 100mph would be a straight ban if caught these days.

I agree with this and I'm really pleased about it.

DaaamnYoullDo · 08/07/2023 15:48

GCWorkNightmare · 08/07/2023 11:09

I do a lot of driving. Generally late at night because other people annoy me. Wouldn’t be unusual to find me doing 90-95 in good conditions with no other traffic on the motorway. I’d limit it to 85 in light traffic (indicated 85 is actually about 80).

In 28 years of driving I’ve never had a speeding fine or accident (my neighbour reversed into my car which was parked on my drive once but have never made contact with another car outside of that).

More concerning is the lack of space left between cars travelling at speed, middle/outer lane hogging, people not undertaking basic car safety checks (tyres and lights), inappropriate speed in bad weather etc.

Yeah same. I don't go over 100, but very close is routine. But I always leave huge gaps and find myself far more frustrated with people driving up eacothers arses at 70mph than the well spread 90mph drivers. I've very much noticed that drivers that go around my speed are paying more attention to the cars around them in my experience.

Agreed. But it is relevant to the person who claimed its "madness" to drive at 100mph

I just disagreed. I think it's ok to those speeds in the right conditions. Preferably legally but not really a stopping point for me

If everyone who ever went too fast would "definitely" come off the road, which you "guarantee" would kill them, there wouldn't be space in the graveyards for all the bodies.

Statistically, it's unlikely that anyone will have a fatal car accident. And of those that do, that the reason for it was entirely related to speed.

I appreciate you feel passionately about this matter, but over exaggerating that people have a death wish is not helpful.

Mischance · 08/07/2023 16:04

Tell them to stop dicking around and drive at the speed limit or let you out at the next coach or railway station so you can continue your journey under your own steam. Definitely this.

It horrifies me how people who would not dream of breaking the law make an exception when driving - as if the speed limits are not proper laws. Do not break the law. End of.

It is not up to an individual to decide when it is OK to break the law - e.g. It's OK to steal from Tesco because they are big company. That does not cut any ice.

Equally you cannot decide when it is OK to break a driving law - the law is the law. It is not based on individual opinion.

I worked for a trauma service. Speeding causes misery.

Because those enforcing the law aren't that arsed as long as you are not being a nuisance. Police forces normally have a 10% plus 2 mph threshold.
The only drivers that are a nuisance on my journeys are those in lane 3 going less than the 70mph limit. I have actually driven up to 150mph testing a remap.
On a track.
I also agree traffic is considerably slower these days, especially on the Mways.

TheHairyHazelnut · 08/07/2023 16:11

80-85mph, while unacceptable, seem fairly common.

Tonning it? No way. Only a dickhead is doing those speeds on our busy and no-very-well-maintained roads.

Someone who places no value on their lives or the lives of others.

I actually broke the law as you call it while in a driving lesson on a 3 lane dual carriageway.

It was either that or be side swiped by a flat bed lorry driver who was too busy gossiping to his mate to check around before changing lanes.

I couldn't change lanes as there was someone to my left so I put my foot down. And no braking wouldn't have worked which is why you are made to learn stopping distances.

Oddly my driving instructor was happy to be alive, happy not to be injured and also not have his car wrecked.

RedToothBrush · 08/07/2023 16:15

You could do 100mph in the UK with ease in the past.

Doing over 100mph now is dumb as fuck and liable to end in rapid loss of your license due to higher levels of speed monitoring.

Not only that, but you'll be bloody lucky to drive in traffic which allows you to drive that fast!

Harrypewter · 08/07/2023 16:21

Driving at 100mph in the Uk is dangerous, there are so many who flick an indicator and just move into the lane. Personally, I find the 30mins the extra 15mph saves me is worth it. Although I don't think some Mways are designed to be travelled on much faster than 70mph anyway. The M1 has lovely straight stretches. The further North you drive the roads are very twisty.

That's hardly the same as routinely driving over the speed limit. You assessed a situation and you took evasive action by speeding. And obviously it was the right decision.

I agree with the pp who is perplexed as to why some people think it's ok to break the law by routinely speeding, yet wouldn't dream of breaking the law in other areas of their lives. I'm not talking about briefly drifting over the speed limit here, but the assumption that driving at 80-85mph is ok because you've done some reading ... and stuff.

Tessisme · 08/07/2023 16:39

Bloody bold fail🙄

Love the username OP, Davey was such a good egg wasn’t he.

Depends on the car. Some luxury cars make 95/100 seem easy and comfortable. That speed in my little 12-plate runaround would feel very different. Either way, 100 is an instant ban.
