To think 100mph isn't routine

I'm travelling with my younger sister & her bf. They're driving up the country and are routinely doing 100mph on the motorways etc which feels overly fast to me. Context: I'm from an overseas country where speed cameras and checks are routine and most people just stick to the speed limit.

Is this the norm in the UK? If not, would you breach the peace and say anything? It doesn't help that they're continually play fighting while driving too which doesn't add to the feeling of safety...

If its say 4am and dry 100mph probably not that much of an issue

Until there is an object in the road or an animal like a deer. You do not have the reactionary speed to avoid it at that speed.

I don’t generally go above 90 because my car doesn’t like it and neither do I.

I did think that if you were caught above 90 it was an instant ban though?

If you're caught over 100mph and in your first two? years of driving, they'll take your licence away and you'll have to pass it again after a certain period of time has elapsed.

Don't quote me on that though because I'm not certain. It's certainly much more serious to be caught over 100mph for anyone though. Not heard about an automatic ban for people who have their licence a while though.

Reugny · 08/07/2023 11:25

Doing 100mph with any passengers isn't normal.

I use to do a lot of motorway driving and I noticed anyone doing above 80mph tended to be driving on their own.

I doubt you would at 70 either lol.

Not a wind up. Yes they're obviously overtaking a fair amount of cars. Some cars seem to be doing 80-90 though.

Right how do I say something then without ruining the relationship... I've got 3 hours in the car with them today and fly home in a couple of days.

Tell them speeds above 80mph make you nauseous and have been known to trigger vomitting that happens with next to no warning.

Hopefully, they'll slow down rather than risk puke all over the seats and carpet.

You have to go to court to get banned for doing 100mph or over. Some people actually get their solicitor to get them the 3 month ban simply because then they won't have points on their license afterwards.

Oh and the people I know who have done this were caught driving that fast on their own.

badluckorbadvibes · 08/07/2023 11:29

I would not say anything while they are driving as this will create bad feeling/argument/discussion and possible distraction.

On a motorway in that situation I would ask them to stop at the next services for a toilet emergency then I would get out and tell them to be on their way. Fuck the relationship, they are being reckless and risking your life. Driving at 100mph and messing about whilst doing so is dangerous.
If they choose to alter the relationship because you value their life, that's equally their problem.

People are so very passive. Stand up for yourself.

You do at 70 in good conditions and if you are observant.

MrsClatterbuck · 08/07/2023 11:30

What do you mean play fighting while driving. That is also very worrying.

thedancingbear · 08/07/2023 11:30

Lots of people speed drive at around 80, which is, let's not forget, roughly what the speed limit is in most of the civilised world.

But routinely doing 100 is nuts. It's partly the speed per se, but also the differential with the other cars on the road. People are less likely to anticipate what you're doing, you have much less time to react if someone does something unexpected.

A good rule of thumb is that 30mph over the speed limit is an instant ban, though there are exceptions. 95mph on the motorway risks a court appearance and a big fine.

Justcallmebebes · 08/07/2023 11:31

I would say, can you slow down please, you're terrifying me. And mean it. Driving at that speed with passengers is dick head behaviour

Haha genius!

KingTriton · 08/07/2023 11:32

I would absolutely hate this. It's unnecessarily reckless.

I would not get in the car with them.

pinkfondu · 08/07/2023 11:34

I would just say you are not used to driving so fast and it's making you very nervous

Popworld · 08/07/2023 11:35

Reugny · 08/07/2023 11:29

I think actually seeing the deer before it jumps out at 70 or 100 is about the same . Small risk that's worth taking at that time off morning

This argument never gets anywhere on here so I'll just sit back and watch

I have my views on speeding, you have yours

Gulikitti · 08/07/2023 11:36

Popworld · 08/07/2023 11:26

I doubt you would at 70 either lol.

The odds of surviving a high speed collision drop drastically at around 65 or 75 mph.

So 100mph is madness no matter what the condition are like.

When I was in my early 20s and just passed my test, 100mph was the norm. When I was driving on my own in my Honda Civic Type R diesel didn't even notice 100mph as fast.

Now I'm in my 40s with 2 kids in a 1.4 petrol car, you're lucky if I do over 60mph 😆

Is it madness though?

How you drive is more important than how fast you drive

Oblomov23 · 08/07/2023 11:41

Many cars do 80 on the motorway, all the time. I do.

The question of the time you have to react is not an opinion, it's physics.

You don't think there is any difference in the time you have to react to an object between 70mph and doing a speed nearly 50% faster?

Your risk assessment based on that fact is, of course, entirely up to you, regardless of its impact on others.

CaptainWarbeck · 08/07/2023 11:43

Haven't caught up with all the replies since I last checked but thanks everyone. I've brought it up politely and they've agreed to drive slower.

Sorry but that is the stupidest post I have heard if you think driving at 100mph is okay because you class yourself as a good driver you certainly are not.

To be honest if you want to kill yourself I don't care but I do concern myself with the other innocent drivers on the road you have not seen and do not see until you plow into them like an idiot and kill them.

You can be the most careful driver in the world but if some thing unexpected happens at 100mph your killing some one.

WaitingfortheTardis · 08/07/2023 11:43

I have no respect for persistent speeders of this sort, it shows their ignorance and arrogance.
