To think 100mph isn't routine

I'm travelling with my younger sister & her bf. They're driving up the country and are routinely doing 100mph on the motorways etc which feels overly fast to me. Context: I'm from an overseas country where speed cameras and checks are routine and most people just stick to the speed limit.

Is this the norm in the UK? If not, would you breach the peace and say anything? It doesn't help that they're continually play fighting while driving too which doesn't add to the feeling of safety...

Yes. No one on the planet from outside the UK can speak decent English. Sure. Yes.

I mean there aren't a whole load of other Anglophone countries or anything.

Fizbosshoes · 08/07/2023 11:44

Even if you're an amazing driver (doesn't sound like they are) 100mph on a uk motorway in the day time is still extremely unwise because you need to be able to react to all the other (slower, inferior) drivers sharing the road.

Newbutoldfather · 08/07/2023 11:45

I would say that the main reason I wouldn’t drive at 100mph isn’t safety, but fear of being caught and energy consumption.

In a well maintained modern car on a quiet motorway, 100mph just doesn’t feel that fast. The brakes on good modern cars will stop a car in less than half the distance stated in the Highway Code. The speed limit hasn’t kept up with automotive development.

I always find the police, who regularly say that they are safe at closer to 150mph, rather hypocritical in lecturing people how dangerous 100mph is. Yes, they have training, but that doesn’t magically decrease their reaction times and, most of the time, when they are speeding, it isn’t a life or death situation.

Any evidence?

Sorry but that is the stupidest post I have heard if you think driving at 100mph is okay because you class yourself as a good driver you certainly are not.

To be honest if you want to kill yourself I don't care but I do concern myself with the other innocent drivers on the road you have not seen and do not see until you plow into them like an idiot and kill them.

You can be the most careful driver in the world but if some thing unexpected happens at 100mph your killing some one.

IF I drive at that its because I feel it's safe to do . The same as if I dont feel it's safe to drive at the limit I would drive under it .

If it was the legal limit to drive at 100mph would it still be dangerous?

Isn't the issue here one of relative rather than absolute safety?

There is risk at any speed. It increases as the speed rises.

badluckorbadvibes · 08/07/2023 11:49

@Chocolatelabradorsarethebest

You’re not from this country and have to ask if the speed is normal, yet come straight to MN with perfect written English

You know English is spoken in countries other than England, right?

Gulikitti · 08/07/2023 11:50

@Newbutoldfather "The brakes on good modern cars will stop a car in less than half the distance stated in the Highway Code."

It takes on average 1.6 seconds to perceive a hazard and begin to react to a hazard, by the the time you have pressed the pedal on your amazing breaking system you have travelled 235ft at 100 MPH.

Newbutoldfather · 08/07/2023 11:51

@badluckorbadvibes ,

60-0 Highway Code braking distance 240ft
my car (BMW) 117ft

Google any decent modern car and the data is available.

No thanks. If you want to make huge valine about braking distances, you back it up!

I think she has already backed it up

Newbutoldfather · 08/07/2023 11:53

@Gulikitti ,

The vast majority of stopping distances at high speed is braking distance, not ‘thinking’ distance.

Again, the facts are readily available.

Does your car data include the thinking distance? I'm guessing not since it's technical data. So no comparison.

Wow your posts get worse, I have already stated why the speed limit is 70mph.
You are an idiot unsafe driver, who does not really get the fact all modern cars now have such advanced components and technology to pass the strict safety checks most of the handling of the car is done for you with out you even realising.

Don't worry I wont reply to you as your obviously oblivious to your deadly driving habits.

Newbutoldfather · 08/07/2023 11:54

@Gulikitti ,

if you have a reaction time of 1.6 seconds, you need your driving licence revoked immediately!

Human reaction time is 0.2 to 0.4 seconds. Of course, every driver ,isn’t drive within their own abilities and limitations.

So thinking distance is not relevant in a crash or driving situation as its not in the highway code 😂

windowof · 08/07/2023 11:56

@Gulikitti @JassyRadlett Thanks for being the voices of reason.
If nothing else, this thread does go to show who paid attention in physics and who didn't. And it's the ones who didn't that think they're fine to speed cos they're 'a gOoD dRiVeR'.
As one of you said earlier, anyone who believes they're a good driver at those speeds on a public road is absolutely not a good driver. None of us are above basic physics.

Your confusing hazard perception with reaction time, please try to keep up.

That didnt answer the question though

If the limit was 100mph would it be dangerous to drive at that limit?

Mythoughtextract · 08/07/2023 11:58

Due to cost of living I think people are driving more slowly. Maybe you can try that angle with your sister.

I seem to have had more news alerts about crashes near us this year. It might just be the newsletter pattern but it could be cars aren't being maintained as well or people are keeping older cars going as they can't afford a new or newer one

TheGoogleMum · 08/07/2023 11:58

I do go up to 80 routinely in the right conditions but not 100 that is very fast!

BonnieBobbin · 08/07/2023 11:59

Imagine being in a speeding car and thinking I'll post on MN to find out how to speak to the driver... nope, can't imagine it.

Mythoughtextract · 08/07/2023 12:00

I think 100mph could be an automatic loss of licence if caught?? If you are from another country you don't want anything on your record
