Men’s Asylum seeker accommodation next to school

chibcha · 07/07/2023 22:36

I feel quite ashamed by how I feel but want to know if it warranted.

There has been an announcement that a 500 men’s asylum seeker accommodation is going ahead against councils decision (it was overruled on a national scale). This is Stafford btw

It will be butted up to (no gap) to my DCs school and opposite a nursery. It’s not because they are asylum seekers that concerns me. It’s the fact it’a 500 men unit, with many with no known history / criminal records/ mental state.

I work over an hour away and currently my daughter who is 12 walks to the bus etc, she also does after school clubs then walks home alone. Most parents at the school are talking about moving their kids but in reality and logistically that’s not going to happen.

I genuinely feel scared for her safety. AIBU?
Its the location of it that’s wrong and the fact the council stated issues and concerns so refused it but got overruled by the government…

I agree. To the bullying woke liberals who dominate this country, the OP’s post is outrageous. To normal, sensible people, it’s perfectly reasonable (you know, us horrible little Daily Mail-reading NIMBYs). Every time I watch the news, or look at photos of migrants arriving, I am struck by the same thing - they’re all young men!! Presumably the women and children and old people have been left behind to face the “war and persecution” we keep hearing about.

People leave their country for all sorts of reasons. Some, of course, are legitimate. I would be the first to defend a Chinese student, for example, who had campaigned for democracy, or a gay Iranian who’d been arrested for his sexuality. If I was sure they were legit, I’d go out of my way to welcome them. But real life isn’t like some mawkish Hollywood film. Some people flee abroad because they’ve murdered or raped someone. Many are just rootless drifters. Look at the Brits who move to Spain. So many British criminals have fled there over the years it’s been nicknamed the ‘costa del crime’.

Dominate this country???

We have the most right wing Home Secretary ever, part of a government that has crushed the right to protest and is really extreme on asylum issues.

The pretence the liberals are in charge is pure bullshit.

Perhaps if the liberals actually were in charge there'd be more border staff to actually process some claims.

Painting over murals is not going to achieve anything.

Have you looked at the AIBU votes?
Have you looked at who has been running the country for the past 13 years?

The issue the OP is dealing with has been imposed on her by this lazy, weak, ineffectual Tory government. They've imposed it on her, her community, her children, her local council, the asylum seekers, the hospitality industry.

This is the Tory government's fault, not some imaginary enemy's.

dimorphism · 07/07/2023 23:39

Some people are willing to ignore reality and sacrifice any number of women and children so long as they can remain smug.

Doing this actually won't do asylum seekers much good because with that many men who are frustrated, in limbo, can't work, there will be fights & there will be a few who are problematic. And they have great opportunity, right next to a school full of vulnerable kids, for problematic behaviour to do real harm. And once that happens community tensions will flare and all the other 99% will be tarnished by the actions of the 1%.

Why?

dimorphism · 07/07/2023 23:41

If there was a proper programme getting all these men into jobs, supporting them, ensuring the school has enough staff to safeguard properly then it would be fine but we all know that's not the reality.

Swrigh1234 · 07/07/2023 23:41

JamSandle · 07/07/2023 23:40

Why?

Because virtues must be signalled.

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/07/2023 23:41

The idea that the left/liberals are responsible for this when it’s happened under the watch of the most right wing government in living memory and is a direct result of the Home Office’s hostile environment policy is genuinely hilarious.

You can complain to your MP but it probably won’t get you anywhere. When it comes to the next election just remember that it was the Tories that ground processing of asylum seekers to a halt and meant that the only way many can get in was by crossing in a small boat.

Waitymatey · 07/07/2023 23:43

Is it fair to call OP racist? Is that not making assumptions about her race and that of those who seek asylum? Since when was a mother worrying racist?

Blinky21 · 07/07/2023 23:44

Assume you know the 'records' of all the non asylum seeking men who live near you and that they are ok then?

JamSandle · 07/07/2023 23:44

Because people like to take this very complex issue and quite literally paint it black and white.

People of ALL countries have concerns about the immigration crisis.

dimorphism · 07/07/2023 23:44

Swrigh1234 · 07/07/2023 23:41

Because virtues must be signalled.

By people who can provide no evidence for a detailed grasp on the reality the rest of us are living. It's just public shaming by people rich enough to be able to avoid the problems the rest of us face.

Interestingly you don't get these people mounting campaigns to have asylum seekers housed near them

dimorphism · 07/07/2023 23:48

I wouldn't put it past the government to deliberately create these clearly insane situations to turn public opinion against asylum seekers.

People who oppose racism and are pro asylum should be opposing this (whether or not they think children are worthy of safeguarding)

Swrigh1234 · 07/07/2023 23:48

Before this thread gets deleted, look up Martha’s Vineyard.

These pathetic virtue signallers, calling OP racist, with their performative compassion soon show their true face if you send some asylum seekers to their neighborhood. Then their kindness suddenly disappears and they start protesting about how their back yard is not suitable for housing migrants, but the rest of the country is.

Teder · 07/07/2023 23:50

I’d be concerned if any group of 500 males were right next to a school. Many asylum seekers will have been through extreme and unimaginable trauma and we know they don’t get the help they deserve. It’s a risk because it’s a large number of traumatised men.
I doubt this would even be a thread if it was 500 women and children.

Waitymatey · 07/07/2023 23:43

No, it is not. That's why more than 80% of Mnetters who voted said the OP is not BU.

Most people know that we have a serious immigration problem. And we can all see why. Its not woke lefty liberal bullies or any other bogeyman. Its the Tory government's fault.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/07/2023 23:54

Is yours a Tory lead council @chibcha?

JudgeRudy · 07/07/2023 23:58

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/07/2023 23:16

How on Earth would anyone know who’s a paedophile?

Known paedophiles wouldnt be housed by a school but unless someone had a conviction you probably wouldn't know. There are sex offenders everywhere. I don't think you can just assume 'there might be' sex offender amongst them so let's move them away from the schools. What about all the other men that live near schools...or parks or anywhere.
Surely everyone's presumed innocent till shown otherwise.

By people who can provide no evidence
^^
The people who are providing no evidence are those who instinctively "know" that asylum seekers will attack their daughters.

They're more likely to be the victims of crime than the perpetrators, egged on by Daily-Mail enthusiasts.

Swrigh1234 · 07/07/2023 22:43

Everyone’s in favour of open borders for asylum seekers. Until they end up in your neighbourhood.

The problem is they are stuck in crowded noisy units, with no support, crap food, no money, not able to work, nothing to occupy themselves with. Enough to drive anyone over the edge and to start feeling resentful of the "normal" households and families around them, many of whom will eye them with suspicion.

Countdowntowinter · 08/07/2023 00:11

There were 300 in a hotel a few miles from here. Suddenly they upped and move them on mass. strange

miniegg3 · 08/07/2023 00:14

CBA reading the replies because most people will be crying racist no doubt 🙄

But no I definitely wouldn't be happy about it!

MostlyBlueberryFlavoured · 08/07/2023 00:15

Were there less than 500 men in your community to begin with?

Nevermind31 · 08/07/2023 00:17

When I was a teenager the council put an asylum seeker unit for single men (ie those without a family with them) on my route to school. The unit was much smaller, maybe 100?
there was a lot of hassle - they don’t have anything to do, are bored, and many were from a culture where women were not respected.
I wouldn’t be happy having that next to the school. At all.
and I am very pro asylum. But I don’t think housing 500 single men together is a good idea

MinimalistMe · 08/07/2023 00:19

Absolutely disgusting, this country is beyond belief. OP I would be moving my child from that school.
