Men’s Asylum seeker accommodation next to school

I feel quite ashamed by how I feel but want to know if it warranted.

There has been an announcement that a 500 men’s asylum seeker accommodation is going ahead against councils decision (it was overruled on a national scale). This is Stafford btw

It will be butted up to (no gap) to my DCs school and opposite a nursery. It’s not because they are asylum seekers that concerns me. It’s the fact it’a 500 men unit, with many with no known history / criminal records/ mental state.

I work over an hour away and currently my daughter who is 12 walks to the bus etc, she also does after school clubs then walks home alone. Most parents at the school are talking about moving their kids but in reality and logistically that’s not going to happen.

I genuinely feel scared for her safety. AIBU?
Its the location of it that’s wrong and the fact the council stated issues and concerns so refused it but got overruled by the government…

It doesn’t really matter what I think . I accept that. But I think it’s perfectly reasonable to take finger prints / biometrics from people that enter our country and to check if they are wanted criminals.
Not just refugees, but any migrants.

When you see what's happening to women in Afghanistan you have to wonder why the men are seeking asylum and not the women.

Sometimeswinning · 30/07/2023 22:14

Milyt · 30/07/2023 22:09

We have 3 hotels with pretty much all male asylum seekers in our town too. I don’t like it either to be honest but in this ultra pc world we live in now, it seems you aren’t able to have a negative view on this. I

I do. You can absolutely have a negative view on this. There are a few people on mumsnet who will argue. But they are actually stupid so I wouldn't worry too much about them.

Imagine if there was war declared in England? Bet the hotels would be empty then!

Well yes I do !

Milyt · 30/07/2023 23:31

@Sometimeswinning

in that case I will declare my negative view.

Apparently the HO dont want to trigger the refugees by doing fire drills on the Bibby Stockholm

FFS. I understand MN is predominately left wing but I can’t work out whether people are being deliberately disingenuous or are just stupid.

Do posters really believe that the immigration crisis currently engulfing the whole of Europe is due to “Tory mismanagement”
and “Brexit.”
Are the Tories in power in France where there are migrant riots almost every year? Where vast areas of Paris and Calais are now essentially slums?
Are they in power in Germany where women can no longer take part in street parties or celebrations for fear of sexual assault? Do you think it’s now not happening because the media don’t bother to report it anymore?
Or Scandinavia where their whole society and culture is having to change to ‘accommodate’ the delight that is the misogynistic culture of the African / middle eastern men that dominate the migrant population.
Did Greece brexit too then as small boat crossing to their islands have increased over 400% in the last 5 years?

Or could it be, just maybe, that the spread of information across the world due to the invention and then increasing accessibility of the internet means that millions of people would like to leave their countries that are generally rife with endemic corruption and war (usually in the name of some religion or other but actually about power and money) for Europe/western society. Because these countries are actually pretty good as the world goes.

By the mid-2022, all around the world there were:

  • 32.5 million refugees and
  • 53.2 million internally displaced persons (due to conflict and violence).

They can’t all move to western counties.

People are going to have to do the hard stuff that every westernised countries people did in the past. Fight, overthrow, vote, protest until their own country ‘develops’ and takes on the values they want and be part of the economic development of their own country.

This is not a “Tory issue” 🤦‍♀️

This is one of the most sensible posts I have seen on this topic for a long time.👏👏

Bringing in people whose religion does not allow our liberals, inclusive ideals is a recipe for major clashes in the future.

Some of us have been saying this for years, but when we do we are branded 'xenophobes', 'racists', 'knuckle-dragging fascists' and any number of choice epithets. 🙄

Majority of refugees go to neighbouring countries which are in Africa or Asia. You think it’s only the west which takes refugees in ? And all this talk of countries have to stand up and overthrow bad government as if it’s not war mongering countries like UK/France/USA which destabilise so many governments to begin with. They demonised Gaddafi but it was obvious the ones who they were supporting were the extremists they claim to be against and much worse than Gaddafi. Their issue with Gaddafi was that he wouldn’t play ball with the west.
there are far worse leaders they left alone because they were more compliant to the west.

So many instances in past and recent history show western powers meddling in the affairs of other countries for their own shady purposes.

Sunsetandsunrise · 01/08/2023 10:30

So yeah the UK et al need to stop creating refugees!

This post is about what's going on here. No one has said it's only Britain taking in refugees.

Posters are angry with the government and where they are placing asylum seekers.

Westcoastwoman · 01/08/2023 11:54

So we can certainly blame Warmongering Tony Blair for trying to be Bush's poodle and invading Iraq on the basis of poor intel.

Now we are stuck with the consequences after he destabilised the Middle East and helped create ISIS.

Yes thats it Thing is social housing tenants/the homeless would not have got one of those flats anyway as they are too expensive.

JenniferBooth · 01/08/2023 14:46

I love the look of the bathrooms though. A shower would be absolute bliss after 29 years of having to rinse shampoo out of my long hair with a bowl of water because my HA will only do baths.

We've just fitted a shower after 16 years in two different HA properties with just baths so completely feel your pain! Don't know how doable it would be for you but we've literally just changed the bathtaps for a shower attachment, banged a bracket up and fitted a pole for a shower curtain, it's not perfect but it's a functional shower. Cost about £70 all in and will probably only work if you have a combi boiler, something to do with water pressure meant our old style boiler (the sort with a water tank in the airing cupboard) wouldn't work but now they've changed it for a combi it does. Just thought I'd mention it anyway as we didn't think it could be done so cheaply and easily.

A bath/shower mixer tap will work fine. Had one in my old flat and, without trying to sound over emotional, it completely changed how I felt about myself because I felt properly clean.

It seems there is a good reason for not housing mothers with children together with men. Men commit sexual crimes. Surprise surprise.
