Can everyone stop driving these fucking stupid ego-tanks in urban areas now?

Who needs a fucking wank panzer in Wimbledon???

Ban them in urban areas.

If a child is hit by a mini they will be scooped onto the bonnet. If they're hit by an SUV they'll be pulled under the wheels.

That's the crux of it

Some odd denials of basic physicals here and reality. Of course a larger, more powerful vehicle with a more savage frontage and shape can and does cause more damage than a modest car.

Mapples · 10/07/2023 20:02

Physics not physicals!

Petrarkanian · 10/07/2023 20:40

More Kinetic energy, more momentum.

jannier · 10/07/2023 23:12

Electric cars are typically very heavy compared to combustion engined cars they also have instant acceleration so would do more damage than a Chelsea tractor....we know survival rates go down with speed.

category12 · 11/07/2023 12:46

A quick google reveals an electric car battery is about 500kg, so a Volkswagen ID. 3 weighs an average 1,830kg, compared with the Volkswagen Golf, which weighs 1,388kg.

However, a Range Rover weighs between 2385 - 2800 kg.

Scunnered123 · 11/07/2023 13:16

The height of an SUV makes it more likely to kill. You are more likely to inflict head and upper body injuries than with lower cars. Lower cars tend to inflict lower injuries which a pedestrian has more chance of surviving. Assume this must be even more so with children.

... but a child would be thrown up on to the bonnet of an ID3 (with a higher chance of surviving) rather than under the wheels of a Range Rover

Yes, I'm not defending Range Rovers, I was responding to Jannier's post above mine.

Not necessarily.
It's not just weight and speed. It's also the height of the bonnet, etc.

Sums the problem up

Speed and acceleration are totally different things so you're confusing two things.

Electric cars can be heavier but not necessarily so. A Tesla model 3 can be the same or less than a 3 series BMW. But my BMW i3 has a lower mass than a Golf. There are no absolutes, especially when a lot of cars still have diesel engines i.e. most SUV's, which are significantly heavier than petrol.

The faster you hit something the greater the combined force....hit a pedestrian at 20 they are more likely to survive than 30 if an electric car reach a higher speed over a shorter distance it will do more damage

And the safety of the bumper....but the picture posted is an American car and no safety bumper

Sure but not all EV's are faster accelerating or heavier than Chelsea tractors so am not sure what point you're making. Except a poor attempt at making EV's sound worse than they are in reality.

What sort of distance are you talking about. Can you actually quantity the difference between 20 and 30mph for two cars where one can accelerate faster than the other?

But if you want to compare, most if not all EV's have regenerative braking, diesel Discoveries don't. So one will grind to a halt if you lift off whilst the other will naturally drag and carry on regardless.

That photo does say it all SamanthaCaine. Horrific. The tank size of the thing then knowing how much it weighs too. Nobody stands a chance against that. Prowling around towns and villages right next to schools. Zero need for an off road vehicle in London whatsoever they are absolute monstrosities. I only hope some people with them think twice about keeping them and anyone in a city actually still considering owning such a stupid thing will now think twice.

mollyminniemo · 12/07/2023 07:57

Interestingly also - the Land Rover Insta has removed ability to comment in posts… wandering if the backlash has (hopefully) begun?

Not that I've heard. I'm just hoping people don't take it out on the people who work for Land Rover

MissHen · 12/07/2023 09:00

Perhaps there should be a 'Special demonstration' event of these vehicles and Supercars. Safety, capabilities and Implications of owning. Each driver goes out with an instructor on an off road course. If they're a worry suggest they sign up for a 'luxury' weekend of driving instruction.
As a society we need to respond to this tragedy, there should be review and response.

Definitely. I appreciate it's an American vehicle but you could easily substitute any SUV in the UK and it would look terrible.

It's exactly why, as an engineer I despise them and would never buy one. It doesn't matter what you hit, pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, other cars, the results are never good, except perhaps for the occupants of the SUV. Yet they handle worse, use more fuel, have the aerodynamics of a brick and generally cost more to run.

Small, lightweight and economic needs to be the default for most people and this type of vehicle reserved for the 5% of people that actually need them.

Hopefully one day they'll become as socially unacceptable as bull bars, before they were banned.

justteanbiscuits · 12/07/2023 11:17

In our row of 6 houses we are the only household that doesn't have a SUV. Every single one of those car's has a bonnet that roughly comes up near my shoulder and I am an adult woman. We live in London and the closest any of these has come to driving 'off road' is pulling onto their drive way. It's appalling.

If you try to explain that to the proto-homanids who salivate over these vehicles their eyes will glaze over with boredom, they don't care about that, as soon as they get behind the wheel they get a huge rush of dopamine because now everyone can see how GodLike rich and Powerful they are. Who cares if a few peasants are crushed 🤷
