Surely Wimbledon play should be stopping for today given the horrific incident at the school?

Just that really....feels very disrespectful to all those affected.

I'm a huge tennis fan and I think it should too.

ManateeFair · 06/07/2023 16:25

I don't think a huge world sporting event has to be called off because of a road traffic accident in another part of the town, is it? It's not like the two things are connected in any way.

If someone is killed by a car over a mile away from your local Tesco, would you expect the supermarket to close all day?

goodbyestranger · 06/07/2023 16:26

No, that would huge disruption to thousands of people and to the entire tournament. The event at the school isn't a major terrorist attack although the death of a child is clearly very sad. Continuing the tournament has nothing to do with lack of respect.

goodbyestranger · 06/07/2023 16:27

^would cause huge disruption

Humidititties · 06/07/2023 16:27

I don't think so, no. Awful as it was, it's nothing to do with the tennis

BodegaSushi · 06/07/2023 16:27

no. news happens every day, the world doesn't stop turning.

why for this little girl and not the millions of others? it's not like it happened on the court

Onthelow · 06/07/2023 16:28

It didn’t occur to me to link the two tbh.

TonTonMacoute · 06/07/2023 16:28

If the accident had happen at the tennis courts, maybe. But not just because it was in Wimbledon. Where would it end?

Goldfoot · 06/07/2023 16:28

Surely a number of people have died tragic accidents all over the country/world everyday this week.

The events are incredibly sad, but you can't cancel a world event for every accident.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/07/2023 16:28

Well no, it's not close by Confused

MrsKeats · 06/07/2023 16:29

No don't be silly. What would that achieve?

StylishM · 06/07/2023 16:30

They're entirely separate events in entirely separate parts of the city. Of course Wimbledon should continue Confused

HeddaGarbled · 06/07/2023 16:30

No.

People, including children, get killed by cars every day.

blahblahblah1654 · 06/07/2023 16:31

No! It's an awful tragedy but there is no connection between the 2 events apart from it being in the same local area. They weren't remotely near each other though.

GuinnessBird · 06/07/2023 16:31

Why should it? It's not connected.

Life goes on, as callous as that sounds.

kitsuneghost · 06/07/2023 16:32

Don't be ridiculous

TheWalrusdidbeseech · 06/07/2023 16:32

Of course not, we cannot pause everything every time a tragedy happens in the neighbourhood or in the world.

I am sure you carried on as normal when worst things happened.

A minute of silence in respect when things are a bit clearer is enough.

MerryMarigold · 06/07/2023 16:33

It's utterly heartbreaking for all those affected and I'm sure it feels like everything should stop for them.

At my niece's school a Y11 child was killed in a road traffic accident the Saturday before GCSEs started on Monday. All his friends and school mates had to go in and sit their GCSEs having just lost their friend tragically. It was awful.

Frabbits · 06/07/2023 16:34

As tragic as the incident is, no, of course not.

Maireas · 06/07/2023 16:34

Onthelow · 06/07/2023 16:28

It didn’t occur to me to link the two tbh.

They're not linked.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 06/07/2023 16:38

Of course not, they are unrelated

Maireas · 06/07/2023 16:41

Did you think it had happened at the actual tournament?

Ponderingwindow · 06/07/2023 16:42

Im reminded of the morning we went to school after 3 of our schoolmates died in a fire.

and of the day we went to school after another had been killed in a car crash the night before.

and the day a beloved student finally succumbed to a lifelong illness

there were more. I went to large schools and there are many years as a student. Those are just the ones that stand out.

not even my own school shut down for tragic deaths. Life kept going.

KrisAkabusi · 06/07/2023 16:43

Do you think all the shops in the area should close as well? All the offices? It's sad, but one thing has nothing to do with the other.

BillyNoM8s · 06/07/2023 16:43

Don't be absurd.
