Surely Wimbledon play should be stopping for today given the horrific incident at the school?

Just that really....feels very disrespectful to all those affected.

If a football game was on in Manchester, and a child died in a car accident, would you say the same thing?

Imo the only reason it's such big news is because the name of the place is synonymous with the sport, and it happens to be that time of year. Had it happened last month, nobody outside the local area would have heard about it.

Man U love their minutes of silence if you watch their matches

Maireas · 06/07/2023 20:03

LittleBearPad · 06/07/2023 19:50

No they absolutely shouldn’t

These people’s lives have shattered. The tennis tournament down the road is an irrelevance.

Many people on here seem to agree with a silence.
Who decides? Who gets consulted?

MayThe4th · 06/07/2023 19:54

I think even minute’s silences have become meaningless.

are they? Minute of silence, black armband, still better than completely ignoring events but subtle enough not to make a big show of things.

olgof · 06/07/2023 20:11

@Maireas Generally the definition of a tragedy is very subjective, both media and demographic (of the victims) driven, so my opinion is that more or fewer minutes of silence won't make a difference. It is less affecting and stirring (if you like that sort of thing), if it's "overdone" as you put it, but then doesn't that loop back to the fact that the definition of a tragedy is subjective anyway, based on the societal/cultural attention span for such victims?

Sorry if I sound cynical – I'm not actually, and I do feel saddened by many incidences including this, but I'm sure everyone knows human emotion/attention can be very selective.

Maireas · 06/07/2023 19:41

Well, it's certainly a shocking event and I can't imagine how that poor child's parents feel. Maybe Wimbledon should consult them?

I they shouldn’t, they should leave them well
alone.

Fair point.

Yes, @olgof , and I do wonder at that football team upthread doing this on every such occasion.
Hard to hit the right note, sometimes.

Who cares.

The parents who have lost a child and those sitting in hospital with their critically injured children will not care.

Electric bikes are the way forward! With trailers and passenger seats. Utopian thinking alert! But come on Wimbledon, try this next year

How do you imagine the players, with all their kit (have you seen the size of the bags they take on to court?!) would fit on the back of a bike?

Silly comment.

Really? I’ve seen bikes that can carry wheelchairs. Bikes that can carry a day’s worth of deliveries. I put four chairs on eBay and a man came to collect them on his bike.

In London there’s no need for such big vehicles, and they make it unsafe for the rest of us.

I’m being argumentative here, but why is a tennis game more important than our children’s safety? EVs contribute to congestion so don’t actually reduce our crappy air condition. Most kids I know in London have asthma, it’s a high price to pay to live in the city we love and lots of us were born in.

Swrigh1234 · 06/07/2023 20:25

What is it with this stupid threads. There is another crazy thread proposing that all SUVs should be banned because of this incident.

Just because you have access to news, doesn’t mean you have to comment.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/07/2023 20:31

I do take your point and I get where you're coming from but Wimbledon will be the last thing on this poor families' mind.

StaunchMomma · 06/07/2023 20:34

By the time it happened people were there, some having travelled from abroad. How would they manage to fit in all of today's missed games at a later time? It's just not plausible.

As awful as it is, it's looking like it was an accident and I do think it would be really unreasonable to cancel an event that had already started.

BIWI · 06/07/2023 20:36

It's not 'just a tennis game' though, is it? It's a massively important competition that's famous around the world.

And if they're using electric Jags, then what's the issue?

LouisCatorze · 06/07/2023 20:40

4X4s should be banned in cities. They are a MC status symbol that has no place in a sustainable society, least of all built-up residential areas.

bellac11 · 06/07/2023 20:44

I dont know whats wrong with peoples heads that they have a thought like this in the first place, then post it somewhere expecting people to agree with them.

I find it quite bizarre

And no I dont agree with a minutes silence for it either, would there have been a minutes silence if the tragedy had happened last week?

Im also not sure why the LTA has issued a message of condolence, like who are they to this girl and her family? (unless of course Im missing something and she was connected to tennis in someway)

Have they issued messages of condolence to other people who have died unexpectedly during the tournament over the years (or in fact during this tournament, as there will no doubt be many)

Exactly, I was walking the dog at 7 this morning and the local park that offers park and ride for the tennis was surprisingly full.

I presume they would be having breakfast before the tennis, having travelled miles.

Assuming the family are locals, they’ll have embraced Wimbledon fortnight.

RIP to the little girl. 💔

probably not.

But knowing that people acknowledge the grief and are trying to show some support is better than completely ignoring them.

In the same way, the community gathering and standing along the road taken by a funeral car to show their respect matters.

I imagine the school gates will end up covered in flowers, by people trying to do something nice. Even if I am not a fan of all the plastic, it's better than pretending nothing happened.

TheWalrusdidbeseech · 06/07/2023 20:49

why don't you agree?

It's more likely to have a minute of silence if the accident had happened last week, it's very difficult right now when little is known, and a large number has been rushed to hospital.

MeinKraft · 06/07/2023 20:52

Perhaps a moments contemplation around the time of awarding the trophy after the final would be a nice touch.

Have you seen what they move on cargo bikes these days? Maybe take a look. https://pedalme.co.uk/

Why on earth should the champions' successes be contrasted with a local tragedy?
There's no connection and would detract from a global, possibly lifetime achievement for those sportsmen and women.
Why?

But why? It's terrible and very sad but honestly just why would that help in any way?

SlightlyJaded · 06/07/2023 21:16

No.

By that logic, a fatal collision on the A40 at Wembley would warrant the cancellation of a major football or music concert at Wembley stadium.

It's tragic and awful, but has nothing to do with the tennis

BeverForget · 06/07/2023 21:16

Captain Tom's family wondering how they can monetise this tragedy to cover another jacuzzi...

WisherWood · 06/07/2023 21:19

I suspect part of the problem for the OP is that when people say 'Wimbledon' for many outside of the area it's synonymous with the tennis. So there was something oddly jarring about watching Twitter trends and seeing two very different things trending under 'Wimbledon'. We don't use 'Manchester' as a synonym for a football game, but we do routinely just say 'Wimbledon' meaning the tennis.

I don't think the tennis should have stopped. But I wouldn't minimise this as an accident either. Someone drove an enormous vehicle through a fence and across a primary school playground, injuring 16 people and killing one. I don't think that's something that should be dismissed as an accident. It's right to question the use of such outlandish vehicles in places where they really aren't necessary.
