Surely Wimbledon play should be stopping for today given the horrific incident at the school?

Just that really....feels very disrespectful to all those affected.

OP posts:

i believe that's the point @Onthelow was making

Indeed, I did understand that. A few of us have made the point and been in general agreement.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/07/2023 16:58

This.

Agree

Would a Manchester underground game be cancelled if there was a serious RTA in Manchester?

I think they did postpone a game after the arena bombings but that would've been from a safety perspective

LaLoose · 06/07/2023 16:55

I think it’s possible OP didn’t realise Wimbledon was such a large area, and thought it was a far more local / intimate tragedy.

I think you may be right.

If you thought it was right by the LTA, and that police cordons and forensic work would be having a direct impact, then you'd have quite a different view of what might be suitable.

But its about 1.5 miles away, the other side of the busy A219, and won't have any traffic or crowd management impact.

It was a horrible incident - I've only just caught up with the news that an 8yo has died

Wiccan · 06/07/2023 17:18

5-6 mins drive with no traffic . How precise.

PerspiringElizabeth · 06/07/2023 17:20

Oh wow, an 8 year old has died? Utterly horrendous.

However it would be pretty perplexing to cancel the tennis broadcast to the whole world because of it.

Stickybackplasticbear · 06/07/2023 17:21

There are people killed in London everyday, definitely some in the area of Wimbledon during the tournament and it's never stopped before sad as it is where would the line be drawn for what stops and when?

CoffeeWithCheese · 06/07/2023 17:22

In terms of a precedent- the Nottingham Open went ahead the other week despite the murders in the city. That one would have had potential to cancel as half the transport in the city was shut down.

Enfys1982 · 06/07/2023 17:22

What a ridiculous thread. Should they stop spoting events every time someone is involved in an accident?

Jux · 06/07/2023 17:24

How far from the courts would you extend this? As far as Raynes Park, maybe as far as New Malden? Someone tragically killed in one of those places causes the tournament to spend a day in Mourning. Perhaps it should actually be any tragic death? And while we're at it, let's include the whole of Surrey and also all of south west London.

It's simply not sensible. Where do you draw the line and who decides?

readbooksdrinktea · 06/07/2023 17:26

It's awful what happened, but it has nothing to do with the tennis tournament.

Ponoka7 · 06/07/2023 17:29

If that approach was taken on Merseyside, football wouldn't go ahead. Usually there's a minutes silence, arm bands worn etc instead. The International Tennis Federation is touring globally, including Africa. Where does stopping for child deaths end?

melj1213 · 06/07/2023 17:34

YABU - where would it end?

If any crime happens within a specific geographic area of a sports stadium/high profile competition they suspend play? Nothing would ever get done!

It's a sad thing that a young child has been killed in a horrific incident but it has no relation to the tennis so why should the whole competition be suspended?

viques · 06/07/2023 17:35

I imagine that the people closely involved in that awful accident have got more to think about that tennis. Poor little girl, and all those other little girls who will be spending their summer holidays remembering something terrible instead of looking forward to their new classes in September.

romatheroamer · 06/07/2023 17:37

On a purely geographical point it's not far at all, only a few minutes by car. Bit I don't agree with the OP for the reasons others have given.

romatheroamer · 06/07/2023 17:38

But!

Denise82 · 06/07/2023 17:40

What a strange way to think.

pimplesquisher · 06/07/2023 17:41

What an absurd suggestion.

EggInANest · 06/07/2023 17:42

I’d rather see Land Rover close their show rooms.

Making money out of selling monster over-spec’d powerful vehicles to be driven round sub/ urban areas.

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/07/2023 17:42

No I don't. It's a horrible accident. The speculation is ambulance chasery.

Poppyblush · 06/07/2023 17:45

Absolutely not. What would it achieve?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/07/2023 17:46

I don’t think so.

The incident is absolutely heartbreaking but I don’t see a link to the tennis.

SweetPetrichor · 06/07/2023 17:47

Accidents happen everyday. People die every day. Life moves on. There’s no reason for anything to stop.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/07/2023 17:52

@EggInANest , there are plenty of other-brand monster vehicles besides Land Rover driving around SW London suburbs every day. Especially at school-run times.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 06/07/2023 17:52

It is tragic accident but you can't stop events for accidents or nothing would ever happen.
