Surely Wimbledon play should be stopping for today given the horrific incident at the school?

Just that really....feels very disrespectful to all those affected.

Don't be silly. There are horrible collisions on the roads every day. Are we supposed to cancel anything local to those?

Calloffruity · 06/07/2023 17:55

Maybe anybody who owns a Land Rover shouldn't drive it today as a mark of respect

Muddymudbomb · 06/07/2023 17:56

People are obsessed with showing respect in such meaningless ways.

Floralnomad · 06/07/2023 17:56

Ridiculous suggestion . It’s very sad but totally unrelated

Goldfoot · 06/07/2023 17:57

I would expect Wimbledon to acknowledge it in some way, a minutes silence or similar. I'm sure my football club would do that if it had happened close to their ground during the playing season, but not today.

WhatADrabCarpet · 06/07/2023 17:59

No, it shouldn't be suspended.
Why should it? The incidents are not related.

Should cricket at The Oval be suspended because someone got run over 200 metres away?

Should the BBC stop their entire output because someone died near Broadcasting House?

It's a truly tragic incident but , sadly for those concerned, life goes on.

No, it's a tragedy but they can't have a minute's silence for this, otherwise where would it end?

Football has silences for all sorts of tragedies in its communities. It doesn't need to "end"

Goldfoot · 06/07/2023 18:04

Thankfully tragedies in schools aren't so common that we need to worry about "where does it end" surely?

It does, though. There has to be a limit? Or do you think no limit to these silences?
So do football matches hold silences for every accident and death within the local area?

Fixthefundamentals · 06/07/2023 18:04

Well that was unanimous!

Ones involving 8yos? Probably.

Wow. That's quite a halo-polishing session you've got going there, OP. You must feel very pure and righteous.

Tessabelle74 · 06/07/2023 18:11

If it had happened outside a court at Wimbledon then yes, a mile away with absolutely no connection to the event at all then YABU

I'd be surprised if they did. As pp said there's no link to the tennis

Football clubs tend to only do a silence or applause if someone who's connected to the club in some way dies, not just for a random accident in the town

EvenleyWitch · 06/07/2023 18:13

If it was terrorism or a targeted attack, then perhaps. This was apparently just a terrible accident. It was not a major police incident and no arrests have been made.

Right. Some posters say otherwise, but if that's your experience, then that's what must happen. Not my local team, but experiences obviously vary.

I see. Only if it's connected to the club? Makes sense.

That is not correct.

A woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Goldfoot · 06/07/2023 18:18

If this had happened at a school in my club's "catchment" there would definitely be a silence. Other tragedies would depend on an individual's connection to the club.

Maddy70 · 06/07/2023 18:19

Why? I haven't even heard of anything in a school but I imagine they are disconnected. Wimbledon is worldwide

Toddlerteaplease · 06/07/2023 18:22

No, I do t see why. It's tragic, yes but nothing to do with the tennis.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/07/2023 18:24

Of course she has. She drove into a school and caused a terrible accident.

What led to the accident needs to be investigated and in the meantime she will have been arrested. Whether she’s charged and with what will depend on that investigation

And apologies, I didn’t read the quote in your response properly
