Surely Wimbledon play should be stopping for today given the horrific incident at the school?

Just that really....feels very disrespectful to all those affected.

OP posts:
GoodChat · 06/07/2023 16:44

Why would they stop play for that? It's sad but completely unconnected

MooMooSharoo · 06/07/2023 16:44

It's 1.5 miles away from the tennis club and I'm sure someone is probably seriously injured or killed within that distance of the tennis club numerous times throughout the two weeks of the tournament, so no, I can't see why it should stop play, no.

Can you explain why you think it's disrespectful? Is it just because both events occurred within the town of Wimbledon?

Do you think a football match at Wembley should be called off if a child was knocked over and killed in Alperton?

Mummyme87 · 06/07/2023 16:46

No. It’s an utter tragedy and awful for all involved but it’s no where near the tennis, and just not necessary. A minutes silence out of respect tomorrow maybe…

@MerryMarigold yes this exact thing happened to someone I knew the Saturday before GCSEs on Monday, horrific RTA and life went on around, GCSEs went ahead

Winnerturkeydinner · 06/07/2023 16:46

Would a Manchester underground game be cancelled if there was a serious RTA in Manchester?

Redglitter · 06/07/2023 16:49

I cant see why you would even think they should have suspended play. It was a tragic accident but there are tragic accidents every day. Just because this happened in the town doesn't mean things should grind to a halt. I'm pretty sure life went on elsewhere in Wimbeldon today. I dont imagine the shops all closed.

Blankstatement · 06/07/2023 16:53

That’s ridiculous. It was a car accident not connected with tennis except the vague locality.

Lots of people have queued, taken time off, spent £££ on tickets, let along the players and staff who will have to play catch up.

Would you reschedule the Grand National or Cup Final if someone died in an accident fairly locally?

LaLoose · 06/07/2023 16:55

I think it’s possible OP didn’t realise Wimbledon was such a large area, and thought it was a far more local / intimate tragedy.

Largeslice · 06/07/2023 16:55

Yabu.

I think this might be called 'virtue signalling' ? someone more in the know than me will correct me I'm sure 🙂

Can you explain why you think it's disrespectful OP?

LegendsBeyond · 06/07/2023 16:56

No. It’s nothing to do with the tennis. People die in RTA’s in London pretty much every day.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/07/2023 16:58

StylishM · 06/07/2023 16:30

They're entirely separate events in entirely separate parts of the city. Of course Wimbledon should continue Confused

This.

TurquoiseDress · 06/07/2023 16:59

While today's news has been undoubtedly horrific, it's not directly linked with Wimbledon tennis so I would disagree that the tournament should be stopped/suspended today.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 06/07/2023 17:00

Of course it shouldn't be stopped.

Zebedee55 · 06/07/2023 17:01

It was a tragic car accident, but no need to stop Wimbledon. What use would that be? 🤔

ManateeFair · 06/07/2023 17:01

LaLoose · 06/07/2023 16:55

I think it’s possible OP didn’t realise Wimbledon was such a large area, and thought it was a far more local / intimate tragedy.

Even if the accident had happened at a school 200 yards away from the All England club, it would be strange to cancel a day of play at a grand slam tennis tournament on that basis.

A pupil was killed in an awful freak accident on the premises of my secondary school in the early 1990s, but nothing nearby closed down for the day - not even the school itself.

Topseyt123 · 06/07/2023 17:02

Don't be so ridiculous. Why should it stop play?

Sad as this incident is, it has no connection whatsoever to the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament.

mycoffeecup · 06/07/2023 17:02

Of course not! stop with the grief tourism and get on with your life

Wiccan · 06/07/2023 17:07

I agree . It's virtue signaling . It's very sad this accident has happened but we can't just come to a stand still every time.

BodegaSushi · 06/07/2023 17:08

Maireas · 06/07/2023 16:34

They're not linked.

i believe that's the point @Onthelow was making

ActDottie · 06/07/2023 17:08

No, life goes on.

BotterMon · 06/07/2023 17:08

MN gets madder by the day.

drpet49 · 06/07/2023 17:08

ManateeFair · 06/07/2023 16:25

I don't think a huge world sporting event has to be called off because of a road traffic accident in another part of the town, is it? It's not like the two things are connected in any way.

If someone is killed by a car over a mile away from your local Tesco, would you expect the supermarket to close all day?

This. What a bizarre suggestion in the first place.

AiryFairy1 · 06/07/2023 17:10

It was actually very near the tennis (5-6 mins drive with no traffic), but I also don’t think they should stop play.
Heartbreaking day though 💔

LakeTiticaca · 06/07/2023 17:10

It's unspeakably awful but no, ot shouldn't stop play.
Accidents happen all the time and I've never heard of any nearby sporting events being stopped.

RegainingTheWill2023 · 06/07/2023 17:13

Of course not. Why would it? The accident is not connected to the tournament in any way.
Sadly tragedies happen every day. Most of which we know nothing about unless directly connected.
The deaths of children today or on other days are no less of a tragedy than the awful death in the accident you refer to. Life goes on surrounded by those tragedies.

BIWI · 06/07/2023 17:13

Why @Sailonby? How on earth is the tennis disrespectful to the people involved in the accident?
