To ask why people are so against giving up meat?

NewCracker · 04/07/2023 21:12

Just that really, why are people so against giving up meat?
Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive. But still as soon as you mention to the greater public about cutting their meat consumption, they get defensive and almost offended.
Would you ever consider giving it up, if you do consume it now? If not, why not?
I'm expecting some hate, this is MN after all, but I am genuinely just curious. Not trying to rattle feathers.

You can say that about lots of things though can't you? Why are people so opposed to giving up drinking? Why are they so opposed to walking everywhere instead of driving? Why doesn't everyone cycle to work? People just don't like being dictated to.

yoshiblue · 04/07/2023 21:15

My son is a fussy eater with SEN and eats meat for protein. I'd be happy to reduce consumption but I don't have time to cook two dinners.

I try to refrain from meat on a Friday as I'm Catholic and see the environmental benefits as an added bonus.

TeaKitten · 04/07/2023 21:15

I like eating it, I do eat more quorn than meat, and I don’t like chicken and lamb. But I enjoy eating meat and there are other unhealthy things I haven’t given up either, like booze or cheese.

LoobyDop · 04/07/2023 21:16

Because it tastes really good, and people are resistant to giving up things that they enjoy. Not really a great mystery, is it?

Dacadactyl · 04/07/2023 21:16

We eat meat cos it tastes good. But as a family we have cut down and try to have 4 veggie meals a week.

I'd possibly go fully veggie myself (I have previously been vegetarian for 2 years) but I'd have an uphill battle convincing the rest of the family.

FirstTimeNameChanger · 04/07/2023 21:16

Because it's delicious

OrwellianTimes · 04/07/2023 21:16

Couldn’t if I wanted to. IBS won’t let me eat dairy, beans, nuts, legumes, soy, quorum, seeds or half the vegetables. Beef, fish and chicken are the only proteins I can eat.

Happy to have genuine alternatives suggested.

However can you tell me you never go anywhere on an airplane? Never drive a car? Because you’re a hypocrite if you push one whilst doing the other.

VerticalSausages · 04/07/2023 21:16

Lots of meat is tasty. It’s not really that hard to understand. I also understand the other point of view too.

YappyCamper · 04/07/2023 21:17

It's tasty. Much nicer than the alternatives.

BMW6 · 04/07/2023 21:18
  1. I really like eating meat
  2. I don't want cows, lambs, pigs or chickens to become extinct
  3. I have the appropriate teeth
  4. I really really like eating meat

You do you.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 04/07/2023 21:18

It tastes too good

ChimChimeny · 04/07/2023 21:18

It tastes delicious
too much fake meat gives me a weird stomach
dd & dh wouldn’t eat beans/pulses/lentils/the other stuff you use instead

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/07/2023 21:18

Because meat tastes good and is nice to eat. I'm a low meat eater (just had a vegan dinner tonight infact) but I also enjoy a lamb chop or chicken thigh every now and then.

Mum2jenny · 04/07/2023 21:18

Because meat substitutes give me serious stomach pain as I’m definitely allergic to quorn and I like eating meat.

yogasaurus · 04/07/2023 21:18

I was a vegetarian for years. No amount of carbs, cheese, chickpeas, tofu, satiates in the way meat does.

SweetPotatoAlpaca · 04/07/2023 21:19

I’m veggie. I can’t change the world by myself and make people care about the impact of meat production and consumption on the environment, but I can’t in good conscience eat it myself knowing what I do, so I just don’t. DH will eat some veggie meals with me, the kids
are outraged if I ever make them, so unfortunately as a household we do buy it.

WolfFoxHare · 04/07/2023 21:19

Coz it’s delicious, that’s why.

BMW6 · 04/07/2023 21:20

How can it possibly be better for animal welfare when these animals need no longer exist?

It's Ruffle feathers, not Rattle.

SummaLuvin · 04/07/2023 21:20

It tastes nice, I enjoy it too much to give it up. it’s simply not realistic for me. I focus on only eating high welfare meat, and eat vegetarian/vegan about 40% of the time. For me that is what is doable. Best to not let perfect get in the way of progress.

Deadringer · 04/07/2023 21:21

Honestly I think about giving it up all the time, but imo there are no decent alternatives. Unfortunately I don't like vegetables, I eat them but I don't like the taste or texture, so that limits me quite a bit, and any meat substitutes I have tried didn't taste great.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/07/2023 21:21

Because I don't want to.

Because my diet is already severely restricted for medical reasons that mean a huge amount of food that is available and relied upon by many vegetarians and vegans is not better for my health.

Because it is significantly cheaper than purchasing shit imitations of food because I cannot consume even one part of the majority of standard versions. Or anything that might have been in the same factory, warehouse or supermarket shelf at some point.

Because having experienced malnutrition and the consequences of cross contamination of things that have no business being in proximity to stuff that is effectively poison to me and unwittingly done myself further damage which further reduces the range of foods available to me, as well as significantly increasing my risk of cancer, osteoporosis and an early death, along with the increased risks of the medication I have to take to try and reduce the effects on a short term basis in exchange for yet another uptick in cancer incidence, it absolutely fucking sucks.

lljkk · 04/07/2023 21:21

Not trying to rattle feathers.

yeah right <eye roll>. I was pescatarian for 17 years. I stopped having iron anemia when I got heme iron back in my diet. I like how sheep or cows convert grass to meat. That is way cool. Heme iron is good for me.

and ps: fake meat is not nice. Why is it always so damn low fat?

stargirl1701 · 04/07/2023 21:21

A 42 day aged rare rib-eye steak from organic grass-fed cows is simply delicious. They live in the field next to our house.

Inkanta · 04/07/2023 21:21

Meat is the best protein food and I try to eat meat twice a week. My body benefits - and I can tell when I need some meat.

MMorales · 04/07/2023 21:21

Because I cant see any reason to give it up.

It's not anything that has ever crossed my mind
