To ask why people are so against giving up meat?

NewCracker · 04/07/2023 21:12

Just that really, why are people so against giving up meat?
Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive. But still as soon as you mention to the greater public about cutting their meat consumption, they get defensive and almost offended.
Would you ever consider giving it up, if you do consume it now? If not, why not?
I'm expecting some hate, this is MN after all, but I am genuinely just curious. Not trying to rattle feathers.

Ha so I did mean ruffle. It's been a long day.

I'm not getting into debates with people who simply won't change their minds. This is your second post already so it seems as though your gunning for a debate that I simply don't have the energy for. This was just to see the reasons.

Are you the OP? Why have you name changed?

So you are the OP with a name change?

My second post already? Who the hell do you think you are? I'll post as many times as I see fit thanks.

Simply won't change our minds? But you aren't putting forward a coherent intelligent proposal. You just asked Why Not.

"Gunning for debate"? YOU started the thread by asking a question!! If you don't want debate why ask????

Peculiar person.

Threads like these make me sad. So many people putting taste over animals lives.

If they weren't bred for meat there wouldn't be any farm animals.

I like meat but buy direct from farmers who are also friends. There's no comparison with supermarket meat. Their animals are beautifully cared for but are produced for meat. Happy animals makes for better meat.

DustyLee123 · 04/07/2023 21:31

My DD is vegan and I’ve tried lots of her meat substitutes. The only one that actually tasted like what it was meant to be was the Linda McCartney duck.

Madrid67 · 04/07/2023 21:31

You could also ask why don't people give up alcohol. That is very bad for people's health, can be addictive, is expensive and unlike meat has absolutely no nutritional benefit.
People drink alcohol because they like it and they eat meat because they like it.

Northernsoullover · 04/07/2023 21:32

I think vegan food is unethical. It has a huge environmental impact. If you truly wanted to be environmentally conscious you'd be eating root veg and potatoes all winter and salads in the summer.

badluckorbadvibes · 04/07/2023 21:32

I like it.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 04/07/2023 21:32

I don't eat meat that often but no way would I give it up. It tastes good and no substitute comes even close.

Yellowlegobrick · 04/07/2023 21:32

Oh and i have a tendency to anaemia and don't tolerate supplemental iron well.

Panteranoir · 04/07/2023 21:32

yogasaurus · 04/07/2023 21:18

I was a vegetarian for years. No amount of carbs, cheese, chickpeas, tofu, satiates in the way meat does.

Ditto I was veggie for years and found the same.

Charles11 · 04/07/2023 21:33

It's not bad for us. All the processed pretend meat is much worse.
Humans do really well on diets of low carb and it's actually grains that we probably don't need, not protein.

I would like animals to be humanely treated and would be happy to eat less meat for this reason.

BMW6 · 04/07/2023 21:33

Try eating meat, you'll have more energy

CherryLipgloss · 04/07/2023 21:33

I question your comment about meat being unhealthy. The latest research seems to indicate that UPF foods are the most unhealthy and best to avoid. That includes many meat substitutes, but not meat itself (except processed meat obviously).

Scienceadvisory · 04/07/2023 21:34

I don't think there is conclusive proof that excluding all meat and fish is the best diet for all, if any, humans. In fact, there is a lot of evidence that fish and small amounts of non-processed meats (so not sausages/bacon etc) are good for us and provide a lot of the nutrients we need. Vegan diets can rely heavily on ultra processed food or foods like soy, lentils and pulses that can cause problems for people with gut problems like ibs.

Sallyh87 · 04/07/2023 21:34

I enjoy it
its easy
I have type 1 diabetes and I find it’s easier to manage with a higher protein diet

inspiredish · 04/07/2023 21:34

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/07/2023 21:21

Because I don't want to.

Because my diet is already severely restricted for medical reasons that mean a huge amount of food that is available and relied upon by many vegetarians and vegans is not better for my health.

Because it is significantly cheaper than purchasing shit imitations of food because I cannot consume even one part of the majority of standard versions. Or anything that might have been in the same factory, warehouse or supermarket shelf at some point.

Because having experienced malnutrition and the consequences of cross contamination of things that have no business being in proximity to stuff that is effectively poison to me and unwittingly done myself further damage which further reduces the range of foods available to me, as well as significantly increasing my risk of cancer, osteoporosis and an early death, along with the increased risks of the medication I have to take to try and reduce the effects on a short term basis in exchange for yet another uptick in cancer incidence, it absolutely fucking sucks.

So sorry to hear this, it sounds awful.

IhearyouClemFandango · 04/07/2023 21:34

Because I like it.

Ponderingwindow · 04/07/2023 21:35

I have tried giving up meat twice. I researched diligently and made sure I was eating a high protein, well balanced diet. I felt Absolutely awful both times. I tried very hard hoping it was temporary, but I am now convinced that a meat free diet is simply not a healthy way for me to live.

Couldn’t if I wanted to. IBS won’t let me eat dairy, beans, nuts, legumes, soy, quorum, seeds or half the vegetables. Beef, fish and chicken are the only proteins I can eat.

Happy to have genuine alternatives suggested.

However can you tell me you never go anywhere on an airplane? Never drive a car? Because you’re a hypocrite if you push one whilst doing the other.

Not quite comparable - not eating meat is the single most effective thing we can do (as ordinary people) to mitigate the climate crisis. You’d have to fly a helluva lot to draw the comparison although best to stop eating meat and drastically reduce flights https://www.surgeactivism.org/articles/going-vegan-and-quitting-flying-are-not-equivalent?format=amp

Going vegan and quitting flying are not equivalent

KirstenBlest · 04/07/2023 21:36

I don't even eat meat or any animals, but some of our beautiful countryside is maintained by being grazed by livestock, and is land not suitable for growing crops.

As pp have pointed out, 'plant-based alternatives' are UPF and usually are grown in warmer climes. Not only that, but I find them not easily digestable and have a strange aftertaste.

Welfare in meat, egg and dairy production is almost certainly the way to go in terms looking after the environment. Eating good quality meat far less often, and eating less of it is probably healthier.

londonmummy1966 · 04/07/2023 21:36

Because there are other things I can do to help the environment which are more beneficial. FOr example I don't drive. Do you drive OP? Does your family have a car? I have flown twice (return trip) in the last 10 years - OP when did you last fly?

I find these very judgy OPs really nauseating. My great uncle had a farm. Animals that were eaten were eaten in their entirety - bones for stock, all parts of the body eaten including offal brains and tongue etc. I'd never buy a pack of chicken breasts - only a whole bird and I'd eat the lot and make stock with the carcass as its disrespectful not to.

However there are a lot of "vegan friendly" products that are very damaging to the environment like avocados and soya beans

Cattenberg · 04/07/2023 21:36

I realise that people have different tastes, but I’m genuinely surprised that some people love the taste of meat so much.

I used to eat meat when I was younger and thought chicken was tasteless and only took on the flavours that you cooked it with. Beef burgers were OK, except for the gristle. I was happy to eat the vegetarian fake beef burgers instead. And one of my friends raves about bacon, but to me it smells like a hospital burns unit, which puts me off.

I would struggle to be vegan, but I can honestly say I don’t miss meat in the slightest.

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/07/2023 21:36

Because it's so delicious.

Bacon sandwiches.
Roast chicken.
Beef stew.
BBQ lamb cutlets.
I even love the humble pleasure of dipping bread into meat juices.😋
