To ask why people are so against giving up meat?

NewCracker · 04/07/2023 21:12

Just that really, why are people so against giving up meat?
Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive. But still as soon as you mention to the greater public about cutting their meat consumption, they get defensive and almost offended.
Would you ever consider giving it up, if you do consume it now? If not, why not?
I'm expecting some hate, this is MN after all, but I am genuinely just curious. Not trying to rattle feathers.

Couldn’t if I wanted to. IBS won’t let me eat dairy, beans, nuts, legumes, soy, quorum, seeds or half the vegetables. Beef, fish and chicken are the only proteins I can eat.

Happy to have genuine alternatives suggested.

However can you tell me you never go anywhere on an airplane? Never drive a car? Because you’re a hypocrite if you push one whilst doing the other.

No, she's not. Because everything helps, doesn't it? If you drive a car, fly and eat meat, you're doing more damage than if you only do two of those things. The idea you need to be all in or not at all ..because... hypocrisy! is a bit daft really as even one meat free meal a week is doing something, which is more than nothing.

Swrigh1234 · 04/07/2023 21:38

Why do you think people don’t want to give up nutritious things they enjoy eating? Take a guess.

Scienceadvisory · 04/07/2023 21:38

ArseMenagerie · 04/07/2023 21:36

Not quite comparable - not eating meat is the single most effective thing we can do (as ordinary people) to mitigate the climate crisis. You’d have to fly a helluva lot to draw the comparison although best to stop eating meat and drastically reduce flights https://www.surgeactivism.org/articles/going-vegan-and-quitting-flying-are-not-equivalent?format=amp

Really? I would have thought not having children would be 'the single most effective thing we can do as ordinary people to mitigate the climate crisis'. But people don't like to discuss that.

Eupemiaroses · 04/07/2023 21:40

Honestly, I cannot recall ever having met a vegetarian or vegan who didn't look 'different' to meat eaters. I'm not sure what it is but they always look so sallow and much older than their years with saggy and dull looking skin. That (and the fact meat tastes good) keeps me eating meat.

inspiredish · 04/07/2023 21:40

FOJN · 04/07/2023 21:24

Are you giving up air travel, your car, using the tumble drier etc? Why not?

Have you replaced your meat consumption with highly processed meat substitutes? We have no idea about the longer term health and environmental consequences of consuming those products.

I've been vegetarian for decades and slowly making my way towards an entirely plant based diet but even I'm tired of hearing vegan/vegetarian evangelists demanding everyone else justify their dietary choices. This approach doesn't convince anyone.

Okay so again I never said I was an eco warrior.
I was just curious, as I've been veggie for practically my whole life and vegan for 10 years. At no point did I say I was better than anyone else. I just asked a question.
And for you information not that it even matters but I rarely eat meat replacements because I don't really know what they're replacing!! I only eat them when others cook them for me.

Northernsoullover · 04/07/2023 21:32

I think vegan food is unethical. It has a huge environmental impact. If you truly wanted to be environmentally conscious you'd be eating root veg and potatoes all winter and salads in the summer.

I don’t like all those random vegan substitutes and think they are over processed garbage… but they are still better for the environment than meat. Easy to check this; https://assets.plateupfortheplanet.org/carbon-calculator/

booksandbrooks · 04/07/2023 21:41

I eat it for my health. Not loads but I was vegetarian on and off for 20 years and despite having a healthy balanced diet i was always more tired and my skin never glowed.

I can't eat lentils or beans and most vegetarian options are processed junk food.

I would love to be a vegetarian but it just doesn't agree with me.

I try to mainly buy organic, free range/ pasture raised meat from UK small scale producers. A lot of the data around issues with meat and the environment are based on huge US monocultures which are representative of all agriculture (though far too much of it.)

Because I love the taste of lamb.

nothing more complex than that.

Swrigh1234 · 04/07/2023 21:43

OP’s post is dripping with faux wide eyed dismay. It’s like lefties cannot fathom how anyone would do anything different to them. Their sense of superiority is so acute that when they look down at everyone else from their pedestal, they cannot fathom how the savages are allowed to live.

What is it with the ‘progressives’ and their inability to understand basic things like, you know, different people having different preferences?

BungleandGeorge · 04/07/2023 21:43

I’m not convinced any of your arguments are actually the case if you look in an unbiased way apart from the animal welfare. That’s the only thing that would convince me. human beings aren’t naturally herbivores though, meat contains required Nutrients. Which can be obtained elsewhere but it’s more tricky and involves more thought and not being too picky

Somanycats · 04/07/2023 21:43

There's no agreement that being a vegetarian is good for your health

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 04/07/2023 21:44

People are against giving up meat because it is extreme and for many not achievable.
Had you made the title more like your post and asked why people won't cut back on meat, you'd have got different answers.

Many people in this country struggle with the concept of mushy peas or pease pudding, they'd rather eat UP sausages. Meat 2 or 3 times a week would be far more sensible.

Maybe we need a thread titled 'How about a healthy flexitarian diet' but hat also might not work. Some MNers need to eat a kitkat between two slabs of steak everyday, or maybe they just like being contrary.

newusern1 · 04/07/2023 21:44

I have come to realise that pulses massively spike my blood
sugar. Can’t eat soy due to migraines. I’m heading towards pre diabetes and eating low carb and meat is much better for me than vegan/ veggie. Personally I could live without meat from a taste perspective though and prefer beans and pulses in lots of meals to meat. However I’ve started eating more meat recently for health reasons and to help build muscle.

I am veggie. Don't care what other people eat. Eat what you want. But I am always puzzled that people try to bring fake meat in as a sort of "gotcha".

I don't eat fake meat, and most of the veggies I know don't. They eat vegetables.

Anyway, good to know I look old and saggy.😁

Gymmum82 · 04/07/2023 21:44

As an avid ‘fitness person’ I would really struggle to get adequate protein in if I cut out meat. It can be done. But it’s much harder and also harder to stay on the lower calorie side because you have to consume so much more to get the same amount of protein as say a chicken breast.

Also I enjoy the taste. I find veggie/vegan food quite bland.

Lastly I think cutting things out entirely is just unnecessary. Actually what would make the biggest environmental impact is everyone just cutting down their meat consumption rather than just a few cutting it out completely.
I do make an effort to buy higher welfare meat and also have cut down red meat especially, I rarely, almost never eat red meat as that has the worst environmental impact. I do eat chicken and fish in moderation

Well sure I guess the best thing we can do is not breed and maybe start bumping people off but I’m not into eugenics and I’m not Thanos so as an easy answer to ‘what can we do about climate change?’ I’d say giving up meat is within reach for most of us.

Whatever your intentions OP, this thread will descend into a vegan bash by defensive meat eaters like all the other threads. None of the meat eaters I know would be capable of working in a slaughterhouse. Slaughterhouse staff suffer terribly with their mental health.

  1. I really like eating meat
  2. I don't want cows, lambs, pigs or chickens to become extinct
  3. I have the appropriate teeth
  4. I really really like eating meat

You do you.

X2!

I was a vegetarian for years. No amount of carbs, cheese, chickpeas, tofu, satiates in the way meat does.

Nonsense. 😂^

Like alcohol, smoking and junk food, because they don’t care about their health, environment, (or animals suffering). Also on threads like these people to seem to get a real kick out of being as graphic as possible about how much they actually enjoy animals suffering. 🙄

I’m surprised the smell alone doesn’t put people off, more so women. Not exactly pleasant on its return journey. 🤢

Well good for you huh!

Mind you don't choke on that big mouthful of righteousness now 🙄

PS
I KNEW you were a Vegan. Twas sooooo obvious.

Tinkerbyebye · 04/07/2023 21:46

We have eaten meat for millions of years, and it really makes me laugh that veggies and vegans eat their stuff shaped like meat but bag on about how bad it is for us and the environment

i eat meat because I like it, I do in fact eat cauldron veggie sausages but that’s it

This is your second post already so it seems as though your gunning for a debate that I simply don't have the energy for.

Try eating meat, you'll have more energy

😂
