I'm scared about the costs in England

Mooshamoo · 03/07/2023 01:03

I'm in Ireland. Last time that I went to England, I was worried about how much things cost there. It's so expensive. It was the transport that totally wiped me out.

Now I'm going to England again next week. I'm going to work on a temporary job there for a month. And I have to get there on Saturday.

The thought of the costs is scaring me!

I will need to stay for one night in London. Then I will get a train to another city. Then I get another train and a bus out to the remote location of my job. That is going to be costly.

My flight from Ireland to England cost 18 euro. My train in Ireland cost 14 euro (I travelled for 2.5 hours on the trap for this price)

I'm worried about all the train costs in the UK. They are so expensive! It's a worry. I remember last time I was in England , I travelled for a very short journey on the train and they charged me fifty pounds.

I'm trying to book the cheapest route in advance. It's a stress though. Just wanted to vent

If you are going to be working somewhere in East Anglia then Stansted would be your best bet.

ShepherdMoons · 03/07/2023 10:50

Sorry that I have no advice but a lot of sympathy. The UK is very expensive and we are all struggling with rising costs.

sonjadog · 03/07/2023 10:51

Goodness, some people take a comment that trains are expensive in England very personally! I am from Scandinavia and I actually thought the same when I was in England a few weeks back.

princesscaraboo · 03/07/2023 10:52

OP, if you told us where you're flying to as there's no "London airport" then maybe we could actually help you to save some £££ and get where you need to go without any problems.

Were you scared? If you came back to England would you be scared knowing the trains were expensive? Or would you sort of - factor it in?

clarebear111 · 03/07/2023 10:55

Are you able to drive? It might work out cheaper to hire a car.

Testina · 03/07/2023 10:55

“Also when you start a thread and 60 people reply. Do you write thanks to every single person? I don't see how that would be possible. Show me where you do that.”

On the off chance that’s a serious question, you do it like this, either as a stand-alone post or as a line in a longer post (first or last sentence is a good place for it):

”Thanks all, for the suggestions”

It’s no hard.

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/07/2023 10:55

I'd also invest in a rail card. They save a fortune.

Batalax · 03/07/2023 10:57

I’m not sure why the op has had so much grief and so many posters have got their knickers in a twist over such an innocuous post.

Lol. I certainly wouldn't be thanking "all" in this thread. Have you seen the amount of nasty comments.

However , I did thank the people who were kind.

Anyway I'm not going to argue about trains anymore.

I'm going to go and prepare for the actual job, which I am really looking forward to.

Why are people being so weird?

OP, yes train fares are generally obscene here, you can get some bargains if it you're lucky but only if you have a lot of flexibility on when you travel. Coaches can be much cheaper. I would definitely look at flying in to Stansted and heading straight to your final destination (hotel or Airbnb if not able to get to your actual accommodation for the summer) rather than staying in London if costs are an issue.

I hope you enjoy your summer experience.

Mooshamoo · 03/07/2023 11:01

I could choose to get offended by this thread
But I'm going to take the high road.

To all the haters on here, I hope that you have a lovely day. And that lots of good things happen for you. Take care

Ah thanks very much for that. I hope that you have a great summer too.

Yeah but it takes that much effort to get anywhere in England really. Last time i went to England , I ended up taking a few trains and buses.

It's a summer school teaching job in a boarding school in England and it's something I really want to do. So yeah I'll have to suck up the cost.

Scared of those trains but I'll get there!

It’s a massive problem. The U.K. is so densely populated that getting anywhere is a nightmare. I live fifty miles from London and thirty miles from Cambridge. My Australian family envy me and assume I spend my weekends popping up to Covent Garden and Oxford Street, or wandering round the Cambridge colleges and bookshops. In reality, going to these places is like setting out on an expedition. Even driving across town is something I can only do at certain times. The traffic is horrendous.

eggandonion · 03/07/2023 11:11

Never ever try to drive through Cambridge or Dublin.
If someone posted that they are arriving into Dublin but need to get to Cork...what is the best way and what is the cheapest way and gave times then all the Irish wans would be advising on aircoach and gobus etc.
By saying London and not specifically which airport or what time of day people are trying to find out how to help. Stansted to East Anglia is straightforward. Gatwick and Heathrow less so but not that difficult.
Norwich has an airport but it has no flights from Cork where I live...so I would have to juggle costs of flights and transport options.

Which is what people are suggesting google will help with as op isn't giving info.
By the way...I am concerned about the lack of salad in English shops. I was going to replace salad with chips but im scared they will be expensive in Cromer.

Is the public transport not faster / better than driving across town?

Fupoffyagrasshole · 03/07/2023 11:13

i live in london but am from Dublin and go back A LOT - i find Ireland insanely expensive in comparison and its way easier to get around here than it is in ireland without a car

i realise being in london means we have way better public transport and train links than loads of other parts of the country though

Davros · 03/07/2023 11:19

Last time DD went by train Kings X to Kings Lynn it was £20+, can't remember precisely, but under £30. That was April this year and booked very late

eggandonion · 03/07/2023 11:23

Park and Ride is good in Cambridge but it's not a speedy place. Just sit on a bus and enjoy the view...plus the railway station is a long way out of town.

babbscrabbs · 03/07/2023 11:26

YANBU some train lines are incredibly expensive. Almost £200 for a less than 2 hour journey during peak hours. Insanity.

Elderflower14 · 03/07/2023 11:33

Look up Split ticket sites.. Ds2 has to go to Yorkshire for a memorial service next Monday... Train line ticket was £151. I got it on a split ticket site for £68....

whynotwhatknot · 03/07/2023 11:39

if youve been before you know how expensive it is

the earlier you book a ticket the better deal you get no point booking with a week to go then saying how shocked you are
