I'm scared about the costs in England

Mooshamoo · 03/07/2023 01:03

I'm in Ireland. Last time that I went to England, I was worried about how much things cost there. It's so expensive. It was the transport that totally wiped me out.

Now I'm going to England again next week. I'm going to work on a temporary job there for a month. And I have to get there on Saturday.

The thought of the costs is scaring me!

I will need to stay for one night in London. Then I will get a train to another city. Then I get another train and a bus out to the remote location of my job. That is going to be costly.

My flight from Ireland to England cost 18 euro. My train in Ireland cost 14 euro (I travelled for 2.5 hours on the trap for this price)

I'm worried about all the train costs in the UK. They are so expensive! It's a worry. I remember last time I was in England , I travelled for a very short journey on the train and they charged me fifty pounds.

I'm trying to book the cheapest route in advance. It's a stress though. Just wanted to vent

@Mooshamoo what airport are you flying to? There are five "London" airports. And where (roughly!) are you heading to?

I thought OP was half English and had lived over here before?

I also thought she’s older than she’s sounding here… e.g. not young and therefore able to look up and compare costs for herself like I did when I visited Ireland at 21 without internet. Ireland was and is still more expensive than England in general from recollection.

Yes, costs for accommodation have gone up post covid as most travel industries have had to increase costs to make up for lack of passengers (WFH etc(. Coaches are cheaper, National Express and or Megabus/Megatrain. You do book in advance to get the cheapest train tickets, even other forms of transport as they have offers or reward schemes.

If OP wants to spend the summer in England because she loves travelling so much then I’d expect proper research, planning etc.

It does come off a bit as whinging and things you could easily google.

A lot of people if they ask about travel and transport here it’s mostly “I’m coming to London for a week with kids, where’s the best/cheapest places to stay in or outside London and how far from West end/what they want to see”. Not a “feck it’s so bloody expensive in London I’m travelling and already paid X amount, this is something I could’ve googled earlier but obvs we don’t have google in Ireland” (those last few words were a joke!),

But it is expensive in London.

The same as it is expensive in Dublin

I don't see the problem with saying things are expensive.

I'm actually really surprised at the amount of abuse on this thread. I thought it was such a minor rhing to write about. It's strange the threads you get abuse on , and the threads you don't get abuse on.

Too easy and would involve manners.

How bizarre. Now I'm getting abuse for not saying thanks to people on this thread,

Even though I have said thanks to people on this thread.

Me: says thanks.

Poster two posts later : why don't you say thanks.
Next poster : you have no manners.

Eh what? Literally , two posts above yours - I said thanks?

Also when you start a thread and 60 people reply. Do you write thanks to every single person? I don't see how that would be possible. Show me where you do that.

You’ve just accused most of the posters here who’ve tried to help you of bullying you and over the top drama. Pot meet kettle.

Also saying things are expensive in London, London if you google it is one of the top 5-10 most expensive cities in the world and being half English yourself it’s not like you wouldn’t know that?! It’s always been expensive here, not magically increased overnight!

You also know AIBU can get varied responses. Your thread title is a bit misleading, it’s almost like you’re a mother in England being worried about rising costs and then you would have something to whinge about.

I think there is way more of an issue here than people realise. This is not about goading.

As an aside, Irish rail is very heavily subsidised, so many might be unaware that rail costs elsewhere, not just U.K. are very expensive. There is also only one rail company and all routes are to Dublin. London/UK is a different planet entirely.

Absolutely :
reading and commenting on posts in isolation
seldom enriches a thread, when a little research
provides a clearer picture
A subtle, astute post Cailin

You’ve not bothered to thank one person at the end of a page where you can say a blanket thanks all here to people.

You’re half English so you must know a bit about thanks and manners here.

@ThelmaBorden and @Cailin66 the OP is actually half English, has lived over here quite recently by her posts so she’s not some green girl off the ferry in England (forget the port!).

Very different if you’ve never been to England from any country. Even then a Lonely Planet or other website gives proper, concise, up to date advice on travel, accommodation and costs etc.

HerMammy · 03/07/2023 10:08

Deary me, some nasty attitudes here, bordering on racist. How dare anyone criticise precious engerlund.
I wonder if OP said she was from London the replies would be different?
Trainline, Megabus are good sites to use.
Good luck, I hope you get there ok and enjoy your summer.

Are you actually fucking serious.

You said "you've not thanked one person".

I HAVE thanked people on this thread.

Can you read?

Jesus christ. The insanity on here. Some people are absolutely batshit crazy.

I have thanked people on here. So are you just going to lie and say that I didnt thank people.

I don't know how to argue with crazy

Very true.

If someone from England said the trains are expensive in England. Evetyone would day "yes it's true".

Thank you for the last line in your comment

It's likely to be expensive yet, and it's shit and unreliable, we know, we live here? With the train strikes too, I'm not sure I'd bother for a low paying temporary job. You need a really robust back up incase there's strikes on the day you want to travel, or if as a knock on because of the strikes, your trains are cancelled. What would you do if the trains are cancelled? Would a night in a Travelodge be unaffordable? Would an Uber be unaffordable? If the answer to both those questions are yes, I'd not take the job tbh.

It’s just not good enough OP. You’ve just as good as pissed in our tea. Perhaps some hot coals to walk over, or a flogging to repent. Let us know when you get over here so we can all meet up and launch some stones at you.
No one in England ever complains about the costs of things. Shame on you for essentially spitting on our precious English trains.

Hayliebells · 03/07/2023 10:20

Sorry, that should have been an exclamation mark not a question mark at the end of the first sentence. I wasn't questioning if the OP realised we know it's shit in England, I was empathising. If we're really honest, we all know England is pretty expensive and difficult to travel around at the moment, especially if you're relying on public transport. It's particularly stark if you're used to a much better train system abroad, and ours has got markedly worse in the last couple of years.

It might be a bit late now, but the earlier you book your train tickets (eg 8 or 12 weeks), the cheaper they are.

BadNomad · 03/07/2023 10:27

I hope you gave proper notice at your job this time so you don't have another fiasco like with call centre. Good luck on moving to England for the 2nd time this year. I'm sure it has changed a lot.

OP, sure you will, ‘get there fine’

This post is a form of taunting, withholding information essential to allowing helpful comments, designed to harness the good nature of posters, wind them up then drop them hard. Kindly people doing their best for someone presenting themselves as hapless and ‘scared’ whilst self misrepresenting and being utterly disingenuous.

Its also crying wolf and we know what happened at the end of that story.

Truly, I hope you stick this summer school out for the month and do not let them or the fee paying scholars down.

I meant to quote this post.

I will stick the job thanks.

I'm really looking forward to it.

Coach can be much cheaper than train. If you fly to London may be try to get a night bus straight to the first area where you will work to save a hotel or airbnb in London.

The OP still hasn’t told any of us where she is flying into or where she is going!

When I was very very green I got the 5 hour bus to the Dublin ferry, over to Wales, train to London. Arrived in London and stayed in a seven pound a night hostel in Blackfriars. Got to a temping agency, after an hour of figuring it out I put up my hand for the next job that came in, was instructed how to get to Notting Hill on a red bus, worked the summer for a lovely English company who wanted me to stay full time. Moved into a one bed flat with a bunch of Irish girls. 10 in total. You graduated over time from the floor to the bed ….

Upstairs were two fab English girls who thought we were bonkers, partied in Cricklewood and Kilburn. The Mean Fiddler too where the craic was mighty. Swore I’d never get the boat again and flew home.

Before the flat there was a brief escapade with my sister trying to break into a squat in Elephant & Castle. But that’s for another day. We were genuinely broke, the OP is not. She is older, experienced, and has money plus an actual job.

Hi OP

I think ppl may be a bit upset as you're putting yourself in a situation then complaining about it. The whole world knows England's trains are expensive and unreliable and it's fine to moan about it. But it's odd to say how scared you are, you just need proper research, advance bookings and a back up plan if things go wrong. The same as all travels really.

It sounds like you really want to go for the experience so it's probably worth coughing up the cash and not comparing the South of England (or wherever it is) with other places £ wise. Though if this job is just for money then yeah maybe not worth it. Hopefully you can get some nice trips with your days off when you're there to make it all worth it. Hope it goes well. Oh and I also second using ticket split for trains and the coach.

There was no fiasco with the call centre job actually. I took the call centre job, only meaning to work in it temporarily. As many people do. It was handy at the time. I was never planning on doing it for long.

As far as I remember what I posted about was that I left that job without giving full notice. Many other people that I worked with in that job also quit without giving full notice. Many saw it as a very temporary job. People come and go all the time

I rember that I posted that I was concerned that I would have to pay back holiday pay.l ad I didn't give full notice. I didnt have to pay back any holiday pay in the end. And my manager at the time was fine about me leaving when I talked to them later. They said that I had been a good worker.

so there was no fiasco, it all all worked out fine. Thanks for your concern

Hire a car instead. You could use Google maps for directions. Driving standards in the UK are far superior to our driving standards so much safer there.
Or travel by bus as their bus network is also better than ours.
