I'm scared about the costs in England

I'm in Ireland. Last time that I went to England, I was worried about how much things cost there. It's so expensive. It was the transport that totally wiped me out.

Now I'm going to England again next week. I'm going to work on a temporary job there for a month. And I have to get there on Saturday.

The thought of the costs is scaring me!

I will need to stay for one night in London. Then I will get a train to another city. Then I get another train and a bus out to the remote location of my job. That is going to be costly.

My flight from Ireland to England cost 18 euro. My train in Ireland cost 14 euro (I travelled for 2.5 hours on the trap for this price)

I'm worried about all the train costs in the UK. They are so expensive! It's a worry. I remember last time I was in England , I travelled for a very short journey on the train and they charged me fifty pounds.

I'm trying to book the cheapest route in advance. It's a stress though. Just wanted to vent

It seems like you're really overthinking this so. If you want to work in another country then it's going to have higher transport costs.

It's only one month. I'd understand if you were going for a year and had to factor in all the extra UK monthly expenses that you don't have in Ireland, like council tax and water charges, but you're not.

I'm not overthinking this. I'm going. I simply wrote that train fares are inclusive expensive in England. Its not that big of a deal.

Op has been in England many times. She claimed to have moved to England few months ago for a job. She knows how it works and how much it costs.

People are just wasting time with well meaning advice. Brutal as it is to say. It's fine to moan about prices, we all do and should because they are ridiculous, but posters spending time on advice etc needn't to.

I forgot this was in AIBU. I was wondering why so many people are being contrary.

Yeah it's pretty strange to get this nasty about train costs.

It cost me £65 to get a return train that took over two hours each way last week, this was to get to a place I could drive there and back in less time.

Also on the way home my train was cancelled so had to get two trains and took me nearly 4 hours.

Next time I will take the bloody car, sorry environment

vagsmudger · 03/07/2023 08:46

Agreed- OP does not give two hoots about getting advice on how to get there cheaply, They just came on to have a rant and to say how shit England is.

midgetastic · 03/07/2023 08:47

Yes trains in England are stupidly overpriced

Have you looked into buses ? Takes longer but if it's east anglia it's not so bad

Orchidgal · 03/07/2023 08:47

I don’t know why anyone would defend train prices in the UK! I regularly drive to Manchester and then fly to London because it’s cheaper than getting the train from where I live!
YANBU the trains are ridiculous here OP, my advice is to get the bus or coach whenever possible. Look up national express and megabus.

Ive siad I love England in this thread. There are some very strange and sensitive people on this thread.

It's also strange to me that this thread about a very minor thing has attracted so much abuse .

What a pointless thread, you know full well you can look up the costs online, just another attempt to say how shit England is right?

To be fair, it is shit. 🤷🏻‍♀️

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2023 08:52

English person #1: trains are really expensive here
English person #2: yes it's fucking ridiculous

Irish person: trains are really expensive in England
English person: how fucking dare you say such a thing

To be fair, the OP's heading doesn't refer to rail costs.

And I thought that the cost of living in Ireland was significantly higher than in the UK, but maybe that's just Dublin.

elodiedie · 03/07/2023 08:55

We all KNOW the trains are shit and expensive. Why we can’t sympathise with the op over this I have no idea. What she is saying is not in the least bit controversial, unless a person from another country says it. Very strange.

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2023 08:55

It is @lieselotte. It would be cheaper to live on the train Grin

Cailin66 · 03/07/2023 08:56

Abhannmor · 03/07/2023 08:34

Not strictly true. Eg one can travel from Cork to Limerick with one change. Killarney to Limerick with 2. But yes mostly it's easier to go to Dublin and back out. Mental.

The UK network is complicated by having so many operators. And very pricey. But it is very big and extensive. I'd just use coaches if I was OP tbh.

I’m not going to explain Limerick Junction to British people! Most of whom will be landing in Dublin.

We missed our flight in Edinburgh after the rugby and had to get a train to London, think it was around £130 one way! But it was an efficient service with internet and nice staff. The girl at the desk apologised to me about the cost. Expensive mistake to not have set the alarm. We love London, it’s one of my favourite cities. As is Edinburgh which is gorgeous.

eggandonion · 03/07/2023 08:56

@JaneJeffer I am singing the National Express song too. I love going by bus.
If this was a reverse journey involving an overnight stay in Dublin it would be expensive too. And the price of posh instant coffee in Cork supermarkets is extortionate.

Triflenot · 03/07/2023 08:57

Hope it goes well OP !

I'm pretty sure the OP has previously said she was born in England, lived in England for some of her childhood, has been to England many times even when living in Ireland and thinks people in England are very rude. That's why some people are maybe not being as "nice" as they could be. She seems to have a few threads saying England/ English people are bad in some way.

Terryer · 03/07/2023 09:01

Yes, it's more expensive than Ireland but we have better schools that have summer schools so you can get a job here so I guess it's a trade off.

Augend23 · 03/07/2023 09:03

If you wanted to OP, you could let us know where you're trying to get to and people may be able to help with cheaper routes.

I live in the east of England and often there are cheaper trains depending on the route you take.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 03/07/2023 09:04

Didn't you consider this when applying for the job?
It sounds like you just don't like travelling very far at all if you're scared of getting a train in England.

winelove · 03/07/2023 09:05

I am assuming you are flying into Stansted. That us the best airport for East of England/ East Anglia. Where are you going to?
Peterborough is the hub and from there you can get most places. But it really depends where you are going.

eggandonion · 03/07/2023 09:09

If op is a teacher in Ireland she is currently enjoying lovely long holidays so will have a nice break before the summer school.
Poor English teachers will be straight into summer school. They will be tired and stressed and maybe rude and grumpy.
I m going to East Anglia soon. I love that region.
