I'm scared about the costs in England

Mooshamoo · 03/07/2023 01:03

I'm in Ireland. Last time that I went to England, I was worried about how much things cost there. It's so expensive. It was the transport that totally wiped me out.

Now I'm going to England again next week. I'm going to work on a temporary job there for a month. And I have to get there on Saturday.

The thought of the costs is scaring me!

I will need to stay for one night in London. Then I will get a train to another city. Then I get another train and a bus out to the remote location of my job. That is going to be costly.

My flight from Ireland to England cost 18 euro. My train in Ireland cost 14 euro (I travelled for 2.5 hours on the trap for this price)

I'm worried about all the train costs in the UK. They are so expensive! It's a worry. I remember last time I was in England , I travelled for a very short journey on the train and they charged me fifty pounds.

I'm trying to book the cheapest route in advance. It's a stress though. Just wanted to vent

Lol. I certainly wouldn't be thanking "all" in this thread. Have you seen the amount of nasty comments.

However , I did thank the people who were kind.

You haven't thanked me for suggesting Stansted 😢

if youve been before you know how expensive it is

the earlier you book a ticket the better deal you get no point booking with a week to go then saying how shocked you are

OP has been to UK and even lived here before, before covid train prices were ridiculous but hotels have apparently increased.

As I said before for a month and with so it seems little to no planning by OP it seems she wants either to whinge about how expensive travel is here in UK or to ask MN vipers for money saving travel costs when there’s a plethora of those on the internet!

Then she berates those for not being nice to her and accuses them of bullying.

From reading some of OP’s posts before this ages travelled and worked elsewhere before so again, it’s not like she’s not new to this.

Scared about costs in England - well research this well in advance and plan for it! She’s left it very late for 12 weeks advance split tickets unless she’s got these as mentioned in her OP.

In case OP is still reading. Youth hostels (reviews online) aren’t that bad an option or spare room sites or sofa surfing sites for a night.

eggandonion · 03/07/2023 12:21

@Twiglets1 ...Stansted is my preferred airport. I love getting my steps in going through duty free and to the Ryanair gate. If I have time I enjoy an overpriced sandwich in pret. And think about sending a copy of the receipt to my mother in law to horrify her.

logsforwinter · 03/07/2023 12:47

I don't know OP, it's the tone of your post and the repetition of worried/scared/costly, despite knowing how expensive travel was in advance of taking this job, that makes me think you were fishing for offers of lifts

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2023 12:55

Lifts? Half of these people would sooner run her over.

Lol who doesn’t enjoy getting an overpriced sandwich in Pret?
I know I do!

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 03/07/2023 13:56

Yup, England is super expensive and especially the trains. Although I wouldn't be taking any jobs in Japan, that will really shock you.

I’m not sure why the op has had so much grief and so many posters have got their knickers in a twist over such an innocuous post.

erm… innocuous you say? as opposed to light the blue touchpaper and stand back kind of innocuous? do keep up

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2023 14:54

Oh yes the OP is obviously a TRA - Trains Radical Activist - who has come here at the behest of Iarnród Éireann to get the people of England up in arms about their much higher public transport costs. Tiocfaidh ár traein.

sashh · 04/07/2023 03:49

As you are not in the UK you might find a train pass cheaper than paying like a local.

Sorry I can't tell you exactly how much they cost because I'm in the UK and it won't tell me, I think they start from about £100.

Yeah but who wants to work in Ireland all the time. I've worked in lots of different countries. I love seeing new places.

I know, but I made my comment in the context of your complaint that getting to this temporary job was going to use up so much of your pay 🤷🏻‍♀️

Find her previous posts. Unsure if she’s ND or anything but I’ve seen and even replied to some of her PPs and now know the name. I don’t doubt I’m a pain in the fecking arse myself for some here, but to shout about bullying a few pages in here when she hasn’t got the response she wants strikes me as strange.

She is a 39/40 year old woman who owns a house, has had a job, is half Irish/English, has lived over here, seems reasonably well educated (if in i realm I understand the standard is superior to ours in England, I’ve got 2 retired maths teachers in ROI and their families to attest to good education) so why she’s asking questions (or having a whinge about England or fishing for a lift) she can google online is beyond me.

There’s also a travel page here, surely better answers would be posted there, so she could’ve posted there for more balanced responses (rather than again a whinge re costs of travel/accommodation in UK).

I know I do!

This spring in Pret I easily spent £11 on an expensive lunch!

I now bring my own or go to Tesco’s/sainsburys/Waitrose/M&S.

Why bother? If someone British comes on Craicnet to discuss visiting Ireland we don't say "just Google it" or search their entire posting history to go "aha you've already been to Ireland what are you posting here for?" or accuse them of thinking they are superior to us.

The OP just wanted to vent her worries and I have no problem with that. It's not harming anyone and nobody is under duress to respond.

I just can’t resist the Pret Avacado & Chicken sandwiches but luckily I don’t go into town (or to airports) more than a few times a year so I treat myself occasionally.

Traffic321Cha0s · 04/07/2023 14:02

It is generally cheaper to get the bus instead of a train
Look at
National Express
Stagecoach
Megabus

If someone comes onto craicnet they will get loads of advice and info. Even if they ask about England!

HollaHolla · 04/07/2023 15:12

Not getting into the slanging match here - but wondered if you were aware of the coach service in East Anglia/Norfolk/Suffolk/Cambridgeshire?
I visit my friend in Ipswich, from near Edinburgh. It's actually cheaper to fly Easyjet to Stanstead, and then get the coach (National Express, and others) to Ipswich. The trains are mad expensive (and not quick - Edinburgh to Peterborough, then change to Ipswich - or Norwich, then change....) but the buses work quite well in matching up with the airport.
Just in case you hadn't come across that as an option.
Enjoy your Summer School job, and hope you enjoy exploring that area.

Wow that's absolutely insane.

It was a simple post about travel costs.

As Janejeffer said, English people often come onto craicnet to ask about costs/hotel costs public transport/best routes in Ireland. Many of those people have been to Ireland before.

Any time English people go to Ireland and post on craicnet looking for advice about travel and costs. They are always met with kindness and advice.

Thanks @janejeffer. Again I totally can't understand the vitriol posted on here about a post about train costs.

People have sent me PM's saying that they are sorry to see the vitriol and abuse that I received on this thread. To the people who went kind advice by pm. Thanks too

Also, what has my age (39) got to do with anything.

I see women in their 30s, 40s and 50s posting on craicnet asking for advice about their costs/hotels/travel plans to Ireland.

Fishing for a lift. Eh what? That never even entered my mind.

Ive never taken a lift from a stranger in my life. I would hardly be expecting a stranger to give me a lift from Stansted airport for 2 hours into East Anglia.

Does that make any sense? Think before you write.

Quite frankly, while people mean well, they are wasting advice.
Like people did on threads before.
That's why some people are not all ao friendly.

There is also difference between touriat asking about travel in Ireland and someone who reportedly had job in England and was back and fro for month.

"I remember last time I was in England..." well of ourse OP remembers when she got job here in April or May.... I just feel bad for people wasting time advising on some fantasy.
