I'm scared about the costs in England

I'm in Ireland. Last time that I went to England, I was worried about how much things cost there. It's so expensive. It was the transport that totally wiped me out.

Now I'm going to England again next week. I'm going to work on a temporary job there for a month. And I have to get there on Saturday.

The thought of the costs is scaring me!

I will need to stay for one night in London. Then I will get a train to another city. Then I get another train and a bus out to the remote location of my job. That is going to be costly.

My flight from Ireland to England cost 18 euro. My train in Ireland cost 14 euro (I travelled for 2.5 hours on the trap for this price)

I'm worried about all the train costs in the UK. They are so expensive! It's a worry. I remember last time I was in England , I travelled for a very short journey on the train and they charged me fifty pounds.

I'm trying to book the cheapest route in advance. It's a stress though. Just wanted to vent

Stansted rather than Norwich. Far more flights to Stansted and despite being called London Stansted it’s very much east of England. If you’d feel comfortable saying where you need to get to, I’m sure posters could make suggestions on routes and modes of transport. Although it sounds like your flight is already booked, it might well be to Stansted?

Chesneyhawkes1 · 03/07/2023 06:41

Just to clarify there aren't strikes this week - just aslef members not working overtime / days off. We are working our normal rostered hours.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 03/07/2023 06:46

A national express or mega bus coach will be cheaper than a train, as will using standard buses. Trains are expensive, especially if you are travelling out of London, but there are usually cheaper alternative transport routes available if you’re happy to put the time into finding them and accept it may be a less convenient route to travel.

What a pointless thread, you know full well you can look up the costs online, just another attempt to say how shit England is right?

I'm inclined to agree with this.
OP if it's going too leave you so cash strapped why are you doing it especially if they aren't paying travel costs. It makes zero sense. Could you not do a similar thing over here and not have to travel so far.

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 03/07/2023 06:49

I’d also suggest that it would be sensible to find a route there that doesn’t involve an overnight in London as that will be very expensive, particularly if you haven’t booked it yet. There may well be other cities you could travel through if an overnight is necessary.

PuddlesPityParty · 03/07/2023 06:49

Try split my ticket or something - same routes but they spilt up the tickets to the cheapest price.

PuddlesPityParty · 03/07/2023 06:50

Sorry it’s split my fare not ticket 🤦‍♀️

milveycrohn · 03/07/2023 06:51

The cheap train fares come out 12 weeks ahead, but get snapped up quickly.
research coaches and bus, for cheaper deals.

Shinyandnew1 · 03/07/2023 07:07

Stanstead may be better. Any hotel overnight in London is going to be pushing £200.

Is the boarding school going to cover your accommodation and food whilst you’re there?

National Express is much cheaper-though will be long-winded.

London is the closest airport. There aren't many regional airports on the East Anglia and south east side of England.

There are lots of regional airport on the West of England. Manchester , Liverpool etc.

But anytime I've had to go anywhere on the East of England I've had to fly to London

Try the coach - where in EA are you going? Norwich has an airport which is international - why aren’t you flying there?

gotmychristmasmiracle · 03/07/2023 07:11

I'd probably hire a car, would be the cheapest option I would imagine.

schnauzerbeard · 03/07/2023 07:15

Could you not get a summer school teaching job closer to home?

Roselilly36 · 03/07/2023 07:17

mogsrus · 03/07/2023 05:49

Norwich has airport does that help as it’s east?

Not sure if the flights from Norwich/Ireland are direct? Usually flights in and out of Norwich are more expensive, than Gatwick or Stansted, Norwich change a development fee of £10 per passenger.

LakeTiticaca · 03/07/2023 07:17

I'm struggling to understand this post.
Exactly how much are they paying you for the months work? Are you doing it for free? How are you going to be so out of pocket for one journey to England and one journey back to Ireland?
Have you not heard of price comparison and journey planning apps?

Wiggleinherwalk · 03/07/2023 07:18

East Anglia is tricky to get to!
Definitely second flying to Stansted and getting the coach to Norwich then pick up a bus from there.
Perhaps you could ask if someone from the school could come and collect you if you could get to the nearest town?

BackT · 03/07/2023 07:19

The thing is - there is pretty much nowhere in East Anglia that you can't get to in a few hours from london. I suspect your flight was EUR18 because it's a very late one. So you've screwed your self over on that one.

Would have been better to get reasonably timed flight and travel onwards straight away. The national express network is very good.

It's like booking a holiday to Iceland and then complaining that it's expensive there. You surely knew that?

MortifiedSeptember · 03/07/2023 07:20

Hire a car, take Mega bus or alternative coach. They tend to be cheaper.

Flights also tends to be cheaper if you book in advance. You left it last minute to book travel, which tends to be more expensive.

For example, dsis bought a ticket to Glasgow a month ahead and she paid flight tickets for the same amount as a national express ticket.

elderflowerandpomelo · 03/07/2023 07:22

That flight is horrifyingly cheap.

trains should be loads cheaper, I do agree, but flights should be massively more expensive

PoePoePoePoe · 03/07/2023 07:22

Norwich Airport isn’t generally a cheap option, and unless you’re coming in via Amsterdam it isn’t particularly well connected/convenient. Depending where in East Anglia you’re going Stansted or Luton are likely to be better options. Cheaper than London is you need a hotel before heard travel too. (Despite the misleading ‘London’ in the airport names 🙄)

MossCow · 03/07/2023 07:24

Why do you need to stay in London overnight? Can't you get an earlier flight or just get the train or coach straight out of london? It seems unnecessarily complicated to stay overnight. You are only coming from one country away.

IhearyouClemFandango · 03/07/2023 07:24

If you're only there for a month surely that is one return ticket? Hardly extortionate.

I'm not sure of the point of this post..."some stuff costs more in other countries" shocker.

Fwiw we got the train from the South Coast to Wales over the weekend, £63 for two return. Basically £15 each way for a 2.5 hr journey.

PriamFarrl · 03/07/2023 07:25

If you are going to somewhere in East Anglia look at getting train tickets from Greater Anglia directly, via their app. It’s much cheaper than via a third party.

Where are you needing to get to?

MossCow · 03/07/2023 07:26

Also, look at splitting the journey on ordinary buses as a bus fare is capped at £2 once you are out of London. Some people travel the length and breadth of the country that way.

userofsorts · 03/07/2023 07:27

Come on OP. You're only travelling Ireland to Norwich! Hardly Outer Mongolia. Just go on Trainline, rather than all this being 'scared' on MN.
