To think I wasn’t in the wrong for not mentioning my allergy?

ChiChaNaYubi · 01/07/2023 16:41

My sister in law made a birthday cake for our father in laws birthday yesterday.
Turns out she used duck eggs in the batter, which make me violently sick and give me breathing problems. I wasn’t mad about it, I understand it’s a really odd thing to be allergic too but she’s absolutely livid with me for not telling her. Thing is, it just never occurred to me to ask tbh! It’s such a random allergy that I often forget about it as duck eggs are just not something I ever come across really. She been really quite nasty to me about it, calling me thick, irresponsible etc.

Is she being u reasonable to be so angry or am I for not asking ?

As others have said, duck eggs are fantastic in sponges, so on the occasions that I have them I would use them in baking.
I'm suprised you haven't come across this issue sooner tbh.

Where are people buying duck eggs from? I don’t feel like I’ve ever seen them in the supermarket.

They sell them at the Tesco Superstore, market in the town centre and the garden centre near me.

Where my sister lives they're sold a lot at garden gates. People seem to keep ducks (or have surplus eggs from ducks) more than they do chickens. Rurally, I think it's what people seem to have.

DS bought home a goose egg from a farm shop last week. It made the most ridiculous omelette.

Inanun2 · 01/07/2023 18:08

I have never knowingly had a ducks egg so very interesting that so many use them on here.
sorry you were Ill and luckily no harm done but she knows now !
I prob would mention if I knew I could be violently sick.

Duck eggs are better to use than chicken eggs for baking cakes, to all of those questioning why duck eggs would be used.

Your SIL is being unreasonable for being angry with you. Perhaps it's her defence mechanism taking over. If I were her, I'd be devastated and making sure you're ok.

I would not say you were unreasonable as such, but it is odd not to check with the baker of a cake whether chicken or duck eggs have been used, given that duck eggs are so commonly used for cake baking. Personally, I would have let her know prior to baking the cake of your allergy. I wouldn't really call you unreasonable though, just one of those things. I have an allergy too and accept that if I haven't informed someone first and they use the food, that I can't eat it, that's on me.

But duck eggs aren't "so commonly used". If they were, I would expect to see them on sale routinely in supermarkets, and they aren't. I've literally never come across them in that context and nor, it would appear, have most people on this thread.

WaitingfortheTardis · 01/07/2023 18:11

@Quiverer I'm pretty sure they are available in most supermarkets, they definitely are in our local Tesco's.

Cherrysoup · 01/07/2023 18:12

Why on earth did she call you thick? I would never think there’d be duck eggs in a cake.

They sometimes have them in Lidl!

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 01/07/2023 18:16

I am a baker and duck eggs make beautiful rich cakes and I use them often. She probably went to a lot of effort to make something extra special only for it to be overshadowed by your undisclosed allergy and reaction. She is probably also very upset that potentially through no fault of her own she could have made you seriously ill. As the person with the allergy you need to make people aware of your allergy and take responsibility. I don't think she is unreasonable to be upset and i do think you are unreasonable for your gung ho attitude to your allergy. Just apologise for not making her aware and then leave it at that.

WrongWayApricot · 01/07/2023 18:17

Idk but now I'm really scared of ever trying them.

Porageeater · 01/07/2023 18:21

I imagine she’s pissed off because it’ll no longer be remembered as the lovely cake SIL made for FIL but as the cake OP vommed up. She should keep this to herself though it’s hardly your fault OP.

therescoffeeinthatnebula · 01/07/2023 18:22

I have so many allergies that I only tell people about the fatal ones, and the ones I'm likely to come across in a given situation.

I wouldn't have mentioned this one either (because it wouldn't have occurred to me duck eggs would have been involved), and like the OP, I'd have accepted it was one of those things and shrugged it off.

The more comments like this, the more shit I feel about my baking skills. Genuinely never heard that duck eggs were better! Clearly need to look into it...

I think you're being unfair to the OP. She didn't make a big deal out of it. If anyone else chose to do so, that's on them.

massiveclamps · 01/07/2023 18:24

Sometimes people let fly like this when they've had the fright of their lives, and she was probably horrified at the thought that she could have killed you.

Most people on this thread aren’t representative to the UK either.

Most also wouldn’t know if someone used duck eggs or chicken eggs because they wouldn’t think to ask and may automatically assume it’s chicken eggs. Those who have egg allergies have stated they didn’t know you could be allergic to one and not the other.

Why would anyone think that a cake might have duck eggs in it?

Duck eggs are bigger and richer in taste. Many old-school cooks prefer them for cakes, especially sponges.

Ovinnik · 01/07/2023 18:25

I'd've been really upset that my cooking had made you so unwell. I can well imagine your SiL feeling the same and reacting as she did.

*of, not the UK

diddl · 01/07/2023 18:29

I agree with SIL that you were irresponsible tbh.

She has baked before & it has only been pot luck that there weren't duck eggs in it & you weren't ill.

I can see why she is angry.

dizzydizzydizzy · 01/07/2023 18:31

itsmylife7 · 01/07/2023 16:45

Why use duck eggs in a cake, surely everyday chicken eggs are fine.

Why is she reacting like this ?
Did you eat it and were sick ?

Duck eggs make lovely cakes.

nocoolnamesleft · 01/07/2023 18:34

I love baking with duck eggs. Though, annoyingly, it's a few months since the local Morrisons has had them in. Think it must be the bird flu problem as they used to usually have them.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 01/07/2023 18:36

I kind of see her point even if her words were harsh.

I would hate if someone with allergies came to my house and eat food I prepared with I so easily could have avoided it, if thry had told me.

She's probably overreacted as she is worries she has causes your serious harm. I would be if I knew someone had trouble breathing.

There are coeliacs in my family & brother's girlfriend told me she reacts badly to kiwi when I first invited her over. Why would you not mention it just in case?

Duck eggs are absolutely not "so common" in cake baking 🤣🤣 in 40 years of baking I've NEVER used duck eggs! @ChiChaNaYubi You were nbu unreasonable not to check. It would never even occur to me

MsRosley · 01/07/2023 18:42

I'm willing to bet that the majority of people on this thread have never eaten a duck egg in their whole life - me included. So I'm amazed you even knew you had an allergy, OP, let alone though to mention it beforehand to someone backing a cake.

Your SIL is being an arse.

diddl · 01/07/2023 18:46

I think it's also about availability isn't it?

A lot of us might never shop anywhere that sells duck eggs-hence why we don't bake with them!

I remember having them regularly as a kid as we had friends on a farm who we got them from.
