To think I wasn’t in the wrong for not mentioning my allergy?

ChiChaNaYubi · 01/07/2023 16:41

My sister in law made a birthday cake for our father in laws birthday yesterday.
Turns out she used duck eggs in the batter, which make me violently sick and give me breathing problems. I wasn’t mad about it, I understand it’s a really odd thing to be allergic too but she’s absolutely livid with me for not telling her. Thing is, it just never occurred to me to ask tbh! It’s such a random allergy that I often forget about it as duck eggs are just not something I ever come across really. She been really quite nasty to me about it, calling me thick, irresponsible etc.

Is she being u reasonable to be so angry or am I for not asking ?

OP posts:

A duck egg is a pretty unusual thing to encounter. I wouldn’t expect it unless the baker had her own ducks.

It’s a bit on you, OP, for not mentioning this allergy. SIL didn’t know and baked the cake in good faith. But she is way out of line to insult you over this and I wouldn’t have anything further to do with her.

I don't know why posters keep insisting duck eggs are unusual or exotic. They are sold in supermarkets. I don't have my own ducks.

Sennelier1 · 03/07/2023 07:53

Did you know she used duck eggs when you started eating the cake? Or did you only discover she used duck eggs when you became sick?

I think the answer to that is pretty obvious, isn't it?

I live on the outskirts of a big city and have lived in various different areas. I've never seen duck eggs in supermarkets.

It's almost as though your experience isn't universal. Hmm

Have you actually looked for them? I am always buying things in supermarkets which other people had no idea were there.

Why would anyone think that a cake might have duck eggs in it?

I certainly wouldn't, I've never cooked with duck eggs and doubt I ever would. She's being ultra unreasonable.

Icecreamalaska · 03/07/2023 11:31

If you have an allergy it's up to you to check what you're eating. It doesn’t really matter how many people on here knew or didn't know that duck eggs are sometimes used in baking. You've had this allergy for years. You should have researched where duck eggs can be used so you could effectively avoid them. (I'm dealing with allergies too - this is just what you have to do.)

But OP doesn't blame the SIL for it. So why lecture OP? She will obviously be ore careful now.

Icecreamalaska · 03/07/2023 11:39

@Lacucuracha I'm not saying SIL should be name calling - she certainly shouldn't! But OP was irresponsible. SIL could have killed her so I don't blame SIL for feeling upset (especially when OP is still querying if she did anything wrong). SIL shouldn't be calling her thick though, everyone makes mistakes sometimes.

Katiesaidthat · 03/07/2023 11:48

You should always inform people of an allergy even obscure, that is on you. She can quit the name calling and wind the subject up.
As for duck eggs, I have never ever eaten a cake or baked it made with duck eggs. Must be more typical in certain parts of Britain. I have seen quail eggs in supermarkets but not duck eggs. I haven´t come across recipes that use them either. Strange, as people on here say there are super usual.

There's no need for recipes to specify hens or duck eggs. Duck eggs are larger than hens' eggs but aside from that they're both eggs.

Many bakers weigh eggs anyway and adjust accordingly. The classic Victoria sponge recipe is - weigh the eggs in their shells and use the same amount of flour, sugar and butter.

PalominoUK · 03/07/2023 15:18

I'm really surprised at the number of people who are against using duck eggs or surprised that you can use them in baking.
They really do make the best sponge cakes as they're higher in fats than hens eggs.

Quartz2208 · 03/07/2023 16:08

Most people wouldn’t know eggs is the generic term in recipes and in allergies. Just like people use different fats - lard/butter/margarine are interchangeable.
it’s also easy to sub different types of milk (although dairy is particular allergen)

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 03/07/2023 16:57

DollyTubb · 02/07/2023 20:49

@ChiefWiggumsBoy a quick Google search for duck egg sponge cake recipes will bring up loads by nigella. BBC, and other well known sources.

If I HAD duck eggs I would search for recipes using duck eggs. As I have never bought a duck egg, I haven't ever searched for that. If I'm searching for a cake recipe and it specifically asked for duck eggs I'd dismiss it because I'm not going out to get them when I have chicken eggs at home!

@NatashaDancing well I guess I'm just a thicky thicko then, because it wouldn't occur to me to use a duck egg or that someone else had in baking where the recipe just specifies 'two large eggs'. But feel free to scoff away.

What's this about butternut brownies?

Super luscious gooey sweet dense brownies 😋

Can you give me some examples please? I love good supermarket discoveries that are somehow niche yet staple (I put that very oddly but ykwim)

Nannyseaside · 03/07/2023 18:55

Duck eggs have been used in baking for years, farm shops sell them its not unusual to be able to buy them here in the uk,and are easy to get hold of

mindutopia · 03/07/2023 18:59

Duck eggs are really commonly used in baking because of their yolks (obviously, I don't mean like a cake from Tesco, but people who bake and have access to duck eggs would definitely prefer them over chicken eggs). You should always ask, especially in baked items. But equally, she shouldn't be acting so crazy as she didn't do anything wrong.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 03/07/2023 19:28

@shinepud well you know about Worcestershire sauce, there are other sauces that used to be easy to find but are becoming rarer mushroom ketchup tesco , anchovy sauce ocado , a dent in popularity probably due to the rise of fish sauce from SE Asia and on the fish theme sild, brisling and skippers, which lie between anchovy and sardines, eat on their own or add to stews!

Semolina, use it to make shortbread short or make pasta from it like a Sicilian.
Fresh yeast, hides near the ready roll pastry in Morrisons.
But then I though that baking with duck eggs was well known.

KingOfThieves · 03/07/2023 19:31

I actually feel bad for her. If you have an allergy that is life threatening then you absolutely need to tell people who are catering to you! I’d feel ill about it if I was her and once that had passed I’d probably be really annoyed

Nobody is scoffing - but if you (general you) are going to continue posting as if duck eggs are as rare and unheard of as , oh I don't know, Dodo's eggs, you'll get pushback.

NatashaDancing · 03/07/2023 19:48

Geo. Watkin's mushroom ketchup is brilliant stuff for adding umami to vegetarian or vegan savoury dishes.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 03/07/2023 19:51

But Morrison's have stopped selling it @NatashaDancing , I've been making my own. I am a nerd who trades food tips with historians Grin

ThinWomansBrain · 03/07/2023 19:58

YANBU - hardly something you'd expect.
Unless she keeps ducks and thus regularly uses duck eggs rather than hens eggs.
