Can I have a few chips? -Light Hearted

Does it annoy you when you are asked for a few chips? DH and I had a Chinese tonight he got chips with his main I had rice. This is a standard for us and I always 'rob a few chips' I offer rice but he usually doesn't want it. The way he joked and said no you can't tonight really reminded me of my ex.

He used to get so frustrated/ annoyed if I wanted to 'rob a few chips' and say if I wanted some just order them that I couldn't have any of his, even though he never finished them all so I just thought it was a waste of food. For ref this is how many I normally take threw a spring roll on the plate to ref the size of plate.

YABU - Get your own chips
YANBU - It's a few chips share

I'd be tempted to collect the Chinese, eat the chips I wanted in the car and then not mention anything to DH....

He's never know.

LOL 🤣

Every single Chinese takeaway I've ever been to calls it spring rolls

They are spring rolls. I’ve NEVER heard the term pancake roll

jellyminelli · 02/07/2023 20:28

That's not a spring roll. It's a pancake roll. YABU

It’s a spring roll

Zhougzhoug · 03/07/2023 09:19

If you don’t want to get a second portion of plain chips just to have “a few,” you need to get a better trade lined up. Order something else that he might want to trade a bit of - salt n pepper chips, prawn toasts, wontons, ribs?

How do you think olden days villages operated before money was widespread?

The Chinese takeaway we go to sells both.

The OPs picture shows a spring roll.

A pancake roll is much larger (about the size of a swiss roll cake bought from a supermarket) but is otherwise similar, meat and vegetables, mostly beansprouts, wrapped in pancakes and deep fried, a bit like a Chinese version of a burrito.

Agree about Chinese chips being the best chips ever. I don't care what they do to them, they're amazing and it's saddening that there are people who've clearly not experienced the joy that is Chinese takeaway chips.

Anyone who has ever deep fried oven chips has had Chinese takeaway chips.

You are wrong. They are far tastier than any homemade deep fried chip I've ever tasted and I grew up in the 80's when every household still had a chip pan

I worked in a Chinese takeaway. Also had friends whose parents did.

We bought McCain's and fried them. They were very popular. Customers either didn't know any different or didn't care.

liveforsummer · 03/07/2023 10:49

Its probably partly the oil with all the Chinese flavour of other things that sets them apart, although I don't many Chinese restaurants she'll out of McCain and likely use large bulk bought catering brands so yours was likely the outlier rather than the norm. I'm not arguing that they don't use shop night chips they clearly do as they aren't home made shape but they DEFINITELY taste different to those you make at home

Depends on the size, surely?

A small McDonald's is fine for one?

A large fish and chips shop portion... Maybe not!

I told DH about this thread when we were driving yesterday. He said the Chinese chips are fine because there are loads. That he wouldn't like to share Mc Donald's chips tho. I would never ask him to do that. I always get my own there!

Burger King we might share chips and onion rings

In fairness I gave him one of my spring rolls (2 in order). I ordered a meal deal which came with a starter. He just ordered a main.

You're even more Unreasonable then, you ordered all that and still wanted his food Confused

"Every single Chinese takeaway I've ever been to calls it spring rolls"

A pancake roll is a big spring roll. You can usually get both. The op that said it's burrito sized needs to share her Chinese takeaway! I want one.

The pancake rolls at our local are the size of the OPs. The spring rolls are little bitesize things

In Cantonese one would just be a large spring roll and the other a small one. There is no specific name for a pancake roll.

Same ingredients, same cooking method, just different sizes. The smaller ones were usually vegetarian and frozen, the large ones were made fresh.

But I only want 6 chips.

And you only want 30.
And a portion if chips has 50 in them.

So why are we buying 100 chips to consume 36 of them? What is the point??

I have no idea what your point is, but I'm more than capable of polishing off a portion of chips myself and would purchase them with the intent of doing exactly that.

jellyminelli · 03/07/2023 15:21

Pancake rolls (2 in a portion like the OP) and here they're the same size as that. For all you naysayers

My point is....

If you never ever finished a portion of Chinese takeaway chips and always left ¼ if them. And the other person only ever has a few chips. Then it makes sense for them to eat the chips you were never going to eat rather than buy an entire extra portion.

But people are fucking possessive over food on MN apparently...to the extreme that they won't let their loved ones have food they were never going to eat, because it's "theirs" 🤷

Agree.

Sometimes I just get a single order of chips from a Chinese because I don’t want anything else. I’d be annoyed if someone asked if they could have some or stole them before I can actually offer even more so if they have more food than me.

xsquared · 03/07/2023 15:36

That may be what some takeaways call them to avoid the confusion, but it's still spring roll in Cantonese. Chun Guin is literally Spring roll.

Worked in a takeaway in the 90s, served both types, nobody ever got confused which one was which.

Oh, also Chinese.

jelliminelli · 03/07/2023 16:10

Yes I know. But we're talking about a Chinese takeaway here. Not the Cantonese language.

OP - we're gonna need a photograph of the menu 🤣

xsquared · 03/07/2023 16:16

Well, I think you just need to accept that some takeaways use the term pancake roll and some takeaways stick with spring roll for both types.

OP ordered what she believes is a spring roll, but pancake roll to you, and that must be what was on the menu.

Bun, roll, or bap?

As I've already said, your point is irrelevant to me as I don't leave scraps that I would gallantly permit a loved one to feast upon.

Spillwaysofyoursoul · 03/07/2023 16:39

The chip thing wouldn’t bother me too much.

But there’s a special place in hell for people who always want a ‘taste’ of your dessert when they haven’t ordered their own. “But I can’t possibly eat a whole dessert!” Well I can eat a whole one, which is why I ordered it!

ClearConfusion · 03/07/2023 16:39

I am a few chips person. I literally only want about five, not half a portion, just a few. I really like chips, but can’t possibly eat an entire portion. I can’t even eat a full McDonald’s medium fries, with a chicken sandwich, I usually donate half of the fries to my son. So when we order Chinese takeaway, we order chips, and I have a few and so does my daughter. The other options are order two chips and throw most of them away, or my son eats nearly two portions ( not really an option) or me and my daughter don’t have any chips at all. Both DS & DD are adults. The few chips option is the best compromise. I think it’s commonly known as sharing. If a family member can’t spare a few chips, then the relationship needs scrutiny. It’s never a problem at our house. But they do take the piss about how little I eat.

jelliminelli · 03/07/2023 16:43

"OP ordered what she believes is a spring roll, but pancake roll to you, and that must be what was on the menu.

We won't know what menu choices there are until she proves it.

Also, teacake. (And before anyone starts banging on about raisins, that's a currant teacake)
