Does it annoy you when you are asked for a few chips? DH and I had a Chinese tonight he got chips with his main I had rice. This is a standard for us and I always 'rob a few chips' I offer rice but he usually doesn't want it. The way he joked and said no you can't tonight really reminded me of my ex.

He used to get so frustrated/ annoyed if I wanted to 'rob a few chips' and say if I wanted some just order them that I couldn't have any of his, even though he never finished them all so I just thought it was a waste of food. For ref this is how many I normally take threw a spring roll on the plate to ref the size of plate.

YABU - Get your own chips
YANBU - It's a few chips share

My friend did this to me the other day because she ordered food that she didn't realise did not come with chips 😅 she did offer me some of her garlic bread though and I didn't mind as I had loads of chips and I am trying to cut down on carbs/portions at the moment. It is very annoying when someone wants some of your food though but if you ask before you even order I don't see the big deal with just a few chips!

Fairislefandango · 01/07/2023 08:10

Its the chip tax.

completely fine if its just one or two. Any more than that and you should get your own!

^This. Not that chips have any place in a Chinese takeaway meal Confused

Why do they sell them then....?

YANBU

if he can't share a few chips out of a huge portion then I despair, like you say, it's a waste of food if you only want a few.

I'm a sharer though, I get some people aren't, on the other hand it's not like you're sitting at a different table in a cafe and have asked a stranger for some of their food though is it!!

curlywurlylover666 · 01/07/2023 10:20

Fine to share chips ordered from the takeaway. No one needs a whole portion of chips and what ever Chinese dish has been ordered.

If at a pub or restaurant, then no it's not OK to share chips.

And I'm generally not a food share.

Spottypineapple · 01/07/2023 10:48

YABU for getting specific things from the takeaway. We've always get a mixture and share everything, I grew up doing this and thought it was normal until I joined Mumsnet!

YANBU for claiming the chip tax

Vellincharm · 02/07/2023 01:37

Update on my previous post.
I just asked dh if sharing his chips with me is annoying.
He said yes, who knew haha.
Guess I will order my own from now on and throw three quarters of the bag in recycling.

Ponderingwindow · 02/07/2023 01:43

Unless your partner agrees to share chips before ordering, it’s just rude.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 02/07/2023 01:57

I think of Chinese food as mix and match so everything ordered is for everyone anyway.

If it were Indian, chippy or Italian, I would be upset. You ain't touching my naan bread.

Luckily DP knows and (sort of) understands my food sharing quirks.

2Rebecca · 02/07/2023 15:26

I think sharing is fine if agreed in advance. We share food a lot. One person always wanting part of someone else's dinner without agreeing it's shared food in advance is annoying especially if always one way

Why would you do that?

Chips can be reheated in a frying pan or air fryer, or put in an omelette or something.

jellyminelli · 02/07/2023 20:28

That's not a spring roll. It's a pancake roll. YABU

You had better tell that to my local Chinese places. Seems like they are also being unreasonable....

WTFAreYouForReal · 02/07/2023 20:42

What's the difference?

Eww chip omelette

OP it’s the phrase “Rob chips” which is probably infuriating your OH, robbing chips
squashing chips into the wall to feed the rats

FoodFann · 02/07/2023 20:55

Nobody needs a whole portion of chips to themselves.

Daisychainsandglitter · 02/07/2023 21:08

Offering your food to someone is one thing, taking it without permission is another.

Depends on the size, surely?

A small McDonald's is fine for one?

A large fish and chips shop portion... Maybe not!

jellyminelli · 02/07/2023 20:28

LOL 🤣

Every single Chinese takeaway I've ever been to calls it spring rolls

TheActualDevil · 03/07/2023 08:25

If it’s chips from the Chinese, I think anybody who eats a whole portion is a massive pig, unless that’s all they’re having. They are usually huge, and would only ever be shared in my house. Any other circumstances and you can keep your eyes off my chips.

YABU if they aren’t Salt-N-Pepa chips though.

liveforsummer · 03/07/2023 08:33

We order chips to share but that's because we are also sharing the rice and noodles. As that's his only carb I think YABU if he doesn't wish to share

liveforsummer · 03/07/2023 08:35

MummyDummyNow · 29/06/2023 23:54

Chips with a Chinese? What now?

(Totally missing the point but chips have no place in a Chinese meal).

Chips from the Chinese are the best chips imaginable. Totally different from chippy chips or any other chips for that matter

liveforsummer · 03/07/2023 08:37

caringcarer · 30/06/2023 01:20

The takeaway near to me always puts in enough chips to fill the good sized bag and I order 1 portion of chips and one rice between 3 of us. Sometimes there are still some chips left as well as some rice. None of us want many chips, just a few each and a spoonful of rice. It wouldn't hurt him to give you a few like the number on your plate.

Bit he's not having rice too and most people eat more than just a spoonful and a few chips 😅

Jellycatspyjamas · 03/07/2023 08:38

Chinese or Indian takeaway are for sharing in this house, everyone has a little bit of whatever they fancy - and everyone knows stolen chips taste better. It would be a complete nonevent for someone to pinch a few chips.
