Can I have a few chips? -Light Hearted

Does it annoy you when you are asked for a few chips? DH and I had a Chinese tonight he got chips with his main I had rice. This is a standard for us and I always 'rob a few chips' I offer rice but he usually doesn't want it. The way he joked and said no you can't tonight really reminded me of my ex.

He used to get so frustrated/ annoyed if I wanted to 'rob a few chips' and say if I wanted some just order them that I couldn't have any of his, even though he never finished them all so I just thought it was a waste of food. For ref this is how many I normally take threw a spring roll on the plate to ref the size of plate.

YABU - Get your own chips
YANBU - It's a few chips share

So weird how possessive people are over their food. It not as if people ordering a takeaway are on the breadline and haven't eaten for 3 days or whatever.

Our family would be offering their chips etc and we might take a few if we fancied them.

Strange that people are calling the person that does not want to share, greedy?! Rather than the chip-snaffler!

Because they are also people who want to control what someone else does with their own food.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/06/2023 10:38

If he never finishes them all, then why not wait until he's finished what he wants, and then have some, as previous posters have suggested, @pontipinemum?

wendyjoy · 30/06/2023 10:47

Get your own.. rather have too many and leave some, than non at all... unless you agree to share before hand. When l used to eat out with ex hubby .. it took him ages to decide.. when our food came, he always looked at my plate and remarked he wish he had ordered same because mine looked nicer.. he would then try and eat ( or taste as he put it) off my plate.
Get your own.
It's only another £2.50

ShortColdandGrey · 30/06/2023 10:49

For the ones that are outraged about people ordering chips from a Chinese have you never had salt and pepper chips??? 😋

I think you're both unreasonable for ordering chips!

This!

Get your own chips. My mum does this and it drives me demented. I ordered them because I want them, not because I want to give them out

Me too.

what do you want from the chips shop?

oh I’ll just have a fish. I’ll have a few of your chips. Every fucking time.

as I’m veggie and only get a portion of chips this means I would go without if the chips are shared.

i think it’s that “ooh I have an appetite of a bird” female thing where eating properly is basically being a fat fucker. If I called her out on it she’d probably say chips are fattening so I’d be better with half a portion anyway.

Stillafatknacker · 30/06/2023 11:00

He's a bloody tight arse!!

Ponoka7 · 30/06/2023 11:00

I'd give feedback to the takeaway that they should offer half portions of chips. I can't stand sharing my food. Luckily I put our takeaway on plates, so my DP is unaware that I've got some of his.

CallieG · 30/06/2023 11:01

I would never order a whole serve of chips for myself, I would never eat them all. For reference I struggle to eat a kids serve of French fries. When I say a handful of chips, I mean 5-6 chips.

Pandorapitstop · 30/06/2023 11:04

Not RTFT, but I'm with Joey Tribiani on this.

Pandorapitstop · 30/06/2023 11:05

Look like nice chips, BTW.

You can ask for an extra £1 portion of chips.

Bluesheep8 · 30/06/2023 11:37

No one likes a chip lifter

😂

zoomiesdrivememad · 30/06/2023 11:40

There are rules for this*:

Chips ( sharing )
Chinese chicken curry ( your own portion - that's your main dish )
Egg fried rice ( sharing )
Noodles / chow mien ( sharing, unless chow mien is your main dish )
Salt & pepper chicken ( sharing )
Beef in black bean sauce ( Your own portion - again your main dish )

And so on...

** disclaimer these are my rules and do not have to be followed by anyone else unless you live in my house or we share Chinese

Can you now?

I've always wondered why takeaway portions were so large, in that, in many places, it's not possible to buy a meal for one person, because everything serves at least two, but I assumed that it was because it wasn't worth their while serving smaller portions and taking less money.

shieldmaiden7 · 30/06/2023 11:44

It drives me mad so sorry you are.
I'm always of the opinion of if you're offered some it's fine. But don't ask. If he leaves some ask if you can polish them off.

pontipinemum · 30/06/2023 12:18

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I do sort of wait. He puts his on his plate first. There is usually 1/3 of a bag left. Their portions of chips are honestly huge. He only joked that I couldn't have any. This was before we ordered by the way when I said can I have a few of your chips or will I order my own?

I didn't mention that it reminded me of my ex to DH. It just used to really really piss my ex off. His food was his food. Even though we lived together and I knew roughly what he would eat and in our 5 years together I never saw him finish a portion of chips. I just wanted to see how many people like that were out there, it would appear a lot.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a Chinese takeaway that didn’t involve everyone helping themselves to everything.

Never ordered chips from one though. Our fish and chip shop chips come in such ridiculously large portions we’ve never had problems sharing (and some will still get thrown out).

If it’s a large portion and it’s agreed prior to order, fair enough.

ordering less than you want, expecting to top up from others orders, No.

when we order Chinese/Indian etc as per pp. we order what we want, then naan/rice/chips etc are ordered assuming we’ll all share.

chip shop orders everyone orders what they want to eat. Don’t just order a sausage or a fish assuming there’ll be enough for you to have some of another person’s order.

i did know someone once who would go out to eat in a group to Chinese/Indian and not order anything for himself, just assumed he’d be able to share everyone else’s. Which Tbf was probably technically true, but still very annoying 😂

Timetotellyou · 30/06/2023 12:29

Be a waste getting your own just to eat 6-7 chips... but some people would sooner throw money away I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don't like chinese takeout style chips but my partner will always order a portion and shove some on my plate because the portion is so gigantic he'd never finish them - we usually split a bag between 4 of us and still end up with leftovers in the bin. You'd have to be pretty greedy to deny someone 6 chips 😅 chinese sizes are massive

Its not about greed. Its about peoples entitlement (or feeling of) to other peoples plates.

Once or twice as one offs MIGHT be ok, but to do it repeatedly isn't on.

Asking to eat someone else's food (repeatedly) is incredibly rude. Asking if you can eat their leftover, when they've finished is fine. My DH is like a bloody vulture, it's a competition between him and the dogs to finish the leftovers !! But he'd never ask to eat my food whilst I'm eating, it's just such bad manners

Nuca · 30/06/2023 12:53

@Fuchs1a exactly what I was just thinking! Nobody needed the reference of not even being able to eat a childs portion🙄
