Trying to work out if it is good or not. Does this look like a child that has artistic potential and how old would you expect the child that drew that to be?

Innate artistic potential/talent is a myth. Artists get good from years and years (tens of thousands of hours) of practice, from learning the techniques for things like measuring relative sizes of objects, from practising working with different media, textures and light sources, from thinking about things in a creative way, and from having a passion for what they do.
A child with a passion for art will almost certainly be able to become good at it, disbarring any impediments. If your child has passion, encourage it and don't worry too much about what "level" they're at right now!

All of this.

It's a nice drawing, OP! Make sure your child has plenty of decent art materials and access to art in the flesh if possible - galleries, books, etc.

Seriously79 · 29/06/2023 18:37

I'm 44 and it's way beyond my talents!

Tlolljs · 29/06/2023 18:38

I’ve been out and had fish and chips. We still don’t know how old this kid is!

GenerallyGreenerGrass · 29/06/2023 18:39

I would say 10 or 11
its very good though

The nasty posters on here who are slagging off a child, whatever the age…I know there are often posts like these but time on mn is certainly best spent when it’s in the encouragement of a child. The nasty sarcastic comments tell us more about the poor character of the commenters than the artistic potential of the child who drew the picture. Some grown adults have the class of a sludge bucket. I’m sure ‘FFS’ or similar will be incoming in droves.

You are taking the comments on here VERY personally! 😆 How strange.......! Wink As someone said, no-one is 'slagging of a child,' FFS. This painting does look like it was done by a 6-7 y.o. (IMO... and also in the opinions of some others.)

Why are you so angry? Confused Should people say it looks like it's been done by a 30 year old professional artist to make you happy?! Wink

Looks like the OP is not coming back anyway.

EasterBreak · 29/06/2023 18:40

6 year old maybe

3dogsandarabbit · 29/06/2023 18:44

I would say 10 year old, it is a lovely painting.

Orchidgal · 29/06/2023 18:44

About 10 I’d say

Throwawayme · 29/06/2023 18:45

I love kids art. I love it no matter what age they are.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 29/06/2023 18:47

It depends

1 If it was a straight copy from a book or if it's an 'original' based on photographs or other paintings they have seen.

2 The post could even be a 'joke' and it's done by a famous, adult artist. (eg Lowry did his matchstick men and someone might have said they were drawn by a 10 year old!)

If it is genuinely a child and they have not copied a picture or photo, I'd say anywhere from 9-11.

Sunisshiningweatherissweet1 · 29/06/2023 18:48

Hard to tell because some styles of art done by adults can look like a child did it (in my opinion).
My son likes drawing, so I'd say the age of the child for the above picture is around 6.
My son is 11 and this is his drawing of our pet.

Between 9-12

It's brilliant

DeliciouslyDecadent · 29/06/2023 18:51

Does this look like a child that has artistic potential

Not enough info from you OP.

@amiaweirdoo Art is not just about being able to copy another picture or painting and do it neatly.

Art is about choosing the subject for the painting and being original.

For example, I think this drawing has been done by someone who has copied an existing painting. I don't think a child would notice the eye shadow (the little black lines under the eyes.)

Mortgagewoes1 · 29/06/2023 18:55

Wow that hamster is seriously impressive

Favouritefruits · 29/06/2023 19:00

9/10 …still better than anything I could draw/paint

Silverumbrella · 29/06/2023 19:00

I like it but then again I love quirky art but what I’d love more is for the op to come back and tell us, I hate these long drawn out threads, they seem pointless.
Sunisshiningweatherissweet1 that’s lovely, your son has talent.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 29/06/2023 19:00

Why do posters change their usernames, post things like this and bugger off?

JeminaSunshine · 29/06/2023 19:00

7?

AliTheMinx · 29/06/2023 19:02

My son's class all painted Queen Victoria in Year 1, so I guess he was 7 at the time. This is a good piece of art.

I think an adult drew the picture.
