Trying to work out if it is good or not. Does this look like a child that has artistic potential and how old would you expect the child that drew that to be?

If they traced it then they're either rubbish at tracing or traced it from a rubbish picture.

Or they’re 6. Jesus what genius 6 year olds do you know that makes a 6 year old doing this ‘shit’? They’ve barely mastered handwriting at that age Confused

Hard to tell because some styles of art done by adults can look like a child did it (in my opinion).
My son likes drawing, so I'd say the age of the child for the above picture is around 6.
My son is 11 and this is his drawing of our pet.

😳he is very talented! Amazing!

PurpleButterflyWings · 29/06/2023 19:10

@Sunisshiningweatherissweet1 That painting your son did of the guinea pig is amazing! Real gift he has there. 😍

I agree with @peachicecream its difficult to pin down an age to an artistic style.

I don't agree with the comment that artistic talent cannot be innate.

My brother is a case in point. At the age of 7 onwards into adulthood he was completely immersed in art, mainly pen and ink drawings. He could literally draw anything, the detail and observations were totally awe-inspiring. It was innate talent no doubt. You'd never be able to "guess his age" by looking at his art, it would have been impossible, or at least wildly inaccurate.

Similarly a girl in my class at school was prodigious by the age of 11 she could have been a new age Beatrix Potter with her Tales of the Riverbank genre. She used to unveil her creations completed over a weekend in the Monday art lesson. She went on to be a professional artist.

OP I love your DC's painting (presumably Queen Victoria?). It's charming, love everything about it, down to the rich red backdrop, with the contrasting royal blue sash, all very regal. I hope you come back and tell us their age. I think 10-11 years old.

garlictwist · 29/06/2023 19:10

I can't believe people are saying 6! I don't think I could draw that and I'm 42.

Maybe 10?

cyncope · 29/06/2023 19:11

My 4 year old could have done this while taking a break from reading Harry Potter...

Picasso aged 27

Oblomov23 · 29/06/2023 19:12

7 to 8.

FuppingEll · 29/06/2023 19:13

I don't know what age but I like it, I like the style. I'd be more likely to have that on my wall than the guinea pig someone posted but that's the thing about art, it's all subjective isn't it.

MuckyPlucky · 29/06/2023 19:16

An adult. Definitely. In a “child-like style”. But definitely an adult. Not to do with skill (I was very accomplished at art as a child, but didn’t draw like that). This just has adult-drawing-as-a-child written all over it.

thegreylady · 29/06/2023 19:17

Year 5/6 at a guess

DanceMonster · 29/06/2023 19:18

I've just done a similar project with Year 4 children, so 8-9. The top third of the class produced something similar. So I'd say a talented 8-9 year old and they're unusually talented if they're younger than that!

Innate artistic potential/talent is a myth. Artists get good from years and years (tens of thousands of hours) of practice, from learning the techniques for things like measuring relative sizes of objects, from practising working with different media, textures and light sources, from thinking about things in a creative way, and from having a passion for what they do.
A child with a passion for art will almost certainly be able to become good at it, disbarring any impediments. If your child has passion, encourage it and don't worry too much about what "level" they're at right now!

Artist Shows His Progression From 2 Years Old To 28 (Interview)

3 years ago we featured Hong Kong painter Marc Allante's artwork, showing how his artistic skills have improved since early childhood. Since then, he's quit his corporate job and is now happily doing art full time. We decided to reach out to him.

It has eyes on either side of the face, so no.

IKnowItsNotMine · 29/06/2023 19:26

My original thought was 7 - but do 7 year olds colour in the whole page, I don’t think so.

Going with a safe 10.

Innate artistic potential/talent is a myth

I am not entirely convinced. We don't draw or paint at home, we're not into art, kids have not taken any drawing or painting classes. But when DD asked DS to draw her a dinosaur, he sketched this. He was 7. I might be biased but I do think that's better than average, and that's without any training whatsoever.
